The Impact

Computational modeling can be used to increase the understanding of fluid dynamics and offer predictive capabilities when used in vascular surgery planning. An important consideration for studies including the pulmonary vasculature is the impact of pulmonary impedance due to respiration and vessel compliance [1]. Currently, the outlet boundary conditions for this type of model consist of a flow profile or constant pressure. These boundary conditions do not reflect the geometry of the lung, effects of respiration, or the compliance of pulmonary vessels. To improve the accuracy of computational modeling of the pulmonary circulation, a dynamic impedance boundary condition will be developed that can be used to accurately represent respiration effects and provide information regarding wave speed and reflection in compliant arteries.

The Impact

The study about the impact of implant denture on getting stuck between the teeth is rarely reported. Computational modeling and simulation was performed in this study in order to investigate the effect of planting denture on interdental food impaction. Four groups of experiment were designed; Simplified teeth models were established and meshed; loads were applied to the models and boundary conditions were constrained in the state of teeth chewing. Finite element method was employed to analyze the deformation of teeth and impacted object. When the force exerting on the impacted object is in the range of 0-5.5N, the distance between denture and tooth after planting denture is less than that between the normal teeth. The deformation is the minimum when the denture is lower than tooth. When the force exerting on the impacted object is in the range of 0-5.5N, interdental food impaction is easier to occur after planting denture, and Interdental food impaction may be more likely prevented when denture is lower than tooth.

Recent research confirms that slip of a fluid on the solid surface occurs at micrometer scale. Slip on solid surface may cause the change of interior material deformation which consequently leads to the change of velocity profile and stress field. This paper concerns the time periodic electroosmotic flow in a channel with slip boundary driven by an alternating electric field, which arises from the study of particle manipulation and separation such as flow pumping and mixing enhancement. Although exact solutions to various flow problems of electroosmotic flows under the no-slip condition have been obtained, exact solutions for problems under slip boundary conditions have seldom been addressed. In this paper, an exact solution is derived for the time periodic electroosmotic flow in two-dimensional straight channels under slip boundary conditions.
