Picking numbers is arguably the most frequently performed input task on smartwatches. This paper presents three new methods for picking numbers on smartwatches by performing directional swipes, twisting the wrist, and varying contact force on the screen. Unlike the default number picker, the proposed methods enable users to actively switch between slow-and-steady and fast-and-continuous increments and decrements during the input process. We evaluated these methods in two user studies. The first compared the new methods with the default input stepper method in both stationary and mobile settings. The second compared them for individual numeric values and values embedded in text. In both studies, swipe yielded a significantly faster input rate. Participants also found the method faster, more accurate, and the least mentally and physically demanding compared to the other methods. Accuracy rates were comparable between the methods.

AbstractIn this study, the hourly directions of eight banking stocks in Borsa Istanbul were predicted using linear-based, deep-learning (LSTM) and ensemble learning (LightGBM) models. These models were trained with four different feature sets and their performances were evaluated in terms of accuracy and F-measure metrics. While the first experiments directly used the own stock features as the model inputs, the second experiments utilized reduced stock features through Variational AutoEncoders (VAE). In the last experiments, in order to grasp the effects of the other banking stocks on individual stock performance, the features belonging to other stocks were also given as inputs to our models. While combining other stock features was done for both own (named as allstock_own) and VAE-reduced (named as allstock_VAE) stock features, the expanded dimensions of the feature sets were reduced by Recursive Feature Elimination. As the highest success rate increased up to 0.685 with allstock_own and LSTM with attention model, the combination of allstock_VAE and LSTM with the attention model obtained an accuracy rate of 0.675. Although the classification results achieved with both feature types was close, allstock_VAE achieved these results using nearly 16.67% less features compared to allstock_own. When all experimental results were examined, it was found out that the models trained with allstock_own and allstock_VAE achieved higher accuracy rates than those using individual stock features. It was also concluded that the results obtained with the VAE-reduced stock features were similar to those obtained by own stock features.

We mainly present the error analysis for two new cubic spline based methods; one is a lacunary interpolation method and the other is a very simple quasi interpolation method. The new methods are able to reconstruct a function and its first two derivatives from noisy function data. The explicit error bounds for the methods are given and proved. Numerical tests and comparisons are performed. Numerical results verify the efficiency of our methods.

Women have been reported to be more positive about same-gender touch, but cross-cultural information about this touch is limited. Male and female students from Chile (n = 26), Spain (n = 61), Malaysia (n = 32), and the US (n = 77) completed a same-gender touch scale. As in past studies, US women had more positive scores than US men. Malaysians had more negative scores than the other three groups. Spanish and US students had more positive scores than Chilean students. National differences in attitudes toward particular types of touch were also noted. The need for new methods for examining cross-cultural differences in touch was discussed.

ABSTRACT Chemical control using toxic baits containing the active ingredient sulfluramid at 0.3% (w/w) is the main method for controlling leaf-cutting ants of the genera Atta and Acromyrmex. However, since 2009, when sulfluramid was included in Annex B of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, there has been an intense search for new methods that are efficient in controlling these insects. Among said new methods, biological control using pathogenic fungi has shown promising results in laboratory conditions. The objective of this study, given the context presented, was to assess the potential of the fungi Beauveria bassiana and Trichoderma harzianum in controlling Atta sexdens. Colonies of A. sexdens were exposed to the fungi by means of formulated baits provided in a foraging chamber, or of suspensions sprayed on the fungus garden, and had their behavioral changes recorded for 21 days. For both formulations, concentrations of 10 and 20% (w/w) of the fungi being studied were used. The results allowed concluding that baits containing 10 and 20% (w/w) of the fungi B. bassiana and T. harzianum were not efficient in controlling colonies of A sexdens. On the other hand, spraying suspensions of 20% (w/w) of B. bassiana and 10% and 20% (w/w) of T. harzianum was efficient and resulted in 100% mortality of the colonies 11, 9 and 7 days after application, respectively. These findings indicate that the fungi B. bassiana and T. harzianum are promising as agents for the control of A. sexdens colonies, when sprayed on the fungus garden, although there are still some challenges as to their use related to the development of technologies for the application of the pathogen.

In today's world, the concept of the game and game theory is turned into new methods of knowing and understanding some of the human behaviours followed by society. In the 21st century, behavioural economics plays a major role in understanding the concept of the `line' game and hence the strategies followed by it. It is a country game played in many parts of India. It is a two-person game with very simple rules and moves. It can be played indoors. Students play the game during the break-outs. The game keenly and minutely determines the objectivity of the game and the behaviour of the players involved inside the game and the way one starts moving helps the other players to understand what one is trying to portray through the game whether it is winning or losing. The strategies involved can be put forth and looked upon from different perspectives. Referring to one such perspective, it can be looked at from a concept of Pareto efficiency, a microeconomic concept. It helps develop logical skills and learn winning strategies.

Purpose Nowadays, there is a rapid growth in different sciences that has led to thousands of publications in the form of scientific research papers. The readers of these papers are generally the people that are involved in science (i.e. researchers, students, teachers and professors). On the other hand, practitioners rarely use these articles as a resource to learn and apply new methods. They prefer an easy to understand, step-by-step guide (i.e. cookbook) helping them skip over the difficult scientific terms and structures. Therefore, because of a shortage of tools in this space, it takes practitioners many years to use newly developed methods. Design/methodology/approach The purpose of this study is to review the literature on verified repositories and presents the necessity of method repositories. Findings This paper aims to introduce method repositories as new tools to bridge the gap between science and practice. Originality/value Method repositories presented in this paper act as an easy to understand guide for newly developed methods in specific fields.

Dynamic response and damage mechanism of two-core sandwich panels with foam and honeycomb cores and glass fiber/epoxy composite sheets under low-velocity transverse impact are investigated. The emphasis is focused on the contact force response and crash mechanism of the two-core sandwich panels. Effects of configurations, impact energy levels and types of the cores on the dynamic response are investigated. A modified drop-test experiment is carried out to obtain contact force history of the two-core sandwich structures under different impact energies. The experimental results show that the 10:10 configurations for both honeycomb and foam core sandwich structures under lower impact energy absorb more impact energy than the other two structures. However, under higher impact energy, the honeycomb core sandwich structures of 15:5 configuration absorbs a little more impact energy than the other two, while for the foam core sandwich structures the 5:15 configuration shows a little better impact resistance. Results also show that when impact energy is low foam core sandwich structures do better in absorbing impact energy than the honeycomb ones.

This paper investigates new methods for measuring forces and tactile sense as a contribution towards relaying the sense of touch to the surgeon. The approach used is to determine a distribution of contact force using a small number of sensory outputs to detect the bending of a surface of known behaviour. Software algorithms have been produced to interpret the contacting force from sensory data, and have achieved a bandwidth of 30 Hz and an accuracy of 2 per cent. The sensor construction is of sufficiently low cost to produce a disposable unit and uses materials that are compatible with the invasive working environment.

The environmentally friendly alternatives are being examined by an R&D group funded by German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The research goals of this group are to analyze the potential of known environmental friendly gases to serve as protective atmosphere, and also to develop and to evaluate new methods for protecting the surface of magnesium melts. One possible alternative is covering the magnesium melt with CO2-snow, which is deposited on the molten bath and decreases the surface temperature of the melt. On the other hand gas expansion is the result of the sublimation of the CO2-snow which displaces any oxygen at the surface of the molten magnesium.

Two new methods for monolayer-to-multileyer Pt deposition are presented. One involves Pt deposition by the replacement of an UPD metal monolayer on an electrode surface and the other the spontaneous deposition of Pt on Ru. The first method, exemplified by the replacement of a Cu monolayer on a Au(111) surface, occurs as a spontaneous irreversible redox reaction in which the Cu monolayer is oxidized by Pt cations, which are reduced and simultaneously deposited. The second method is illustrated by the deposition of Pt on a Ru(0001) surface and on carbon-supported Ru nanoparticles. This deposition takes place upon immersion of a UHV-prepared Ru(0001) crystal or Ru nanoparticles, reduced in H2, in a solution containing PtCl6 2- ions. The oxidation of Ru to RuOH by a local cell mechanism appears to be coupled with Pt deposition. This method facilitates the design of active Pt-Ru catalysts with ultimately low Pt loadings. Only a quarter of a monolayer of Pt on Ru nanoparticles yields an electrocatalyst with higher activity and CO tolerance for H2/CO oxidation than commercial Pt-Ru alloy electrocatalysts with considerably higher Pt loadings.
