Wireless systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT) are changing the way we interact with the cyber and the physical world. As IoT systems become more and more pervasive, it is imperative to design wireless protocols that can effectively and efficiently support IoT devices and operations. On the other hand, today's IoT wireless systems are based on inflexible designs, which makes them inefficient and prone to a variety of wireless attacks. In this paper, we introduce the new notion of a deep learning-based polymorphic IoT receiver, able to reconfigure its waveform demodulation strategy itself in real time, based on the inferred waveform parameters. Our key innovation is the introduction of a novel embedded deep learning architecture that enables the solution of waveform inference problems, which is then integrated into a generalized hardware/software architecture with radio components and signal processing. Our polymorphic wireless receiver is prototyped on a custom-made software-defined radio platform. We show through extensive over-the-air experiments that the system achieves throughput within 87% of a perfect-knowledge Oracle system, thus demonstrating for the first time that polymorphic receivers are feasible.

Electronic commerce (e-commerce) activity is growing exponentially, and it is revolutionizing the way that businesses are run. There is now an explosion of mobile wireless services accessible via mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Mobile e-commerce (m-commerce) makes business mobility a reality. Mobile users can access the Internet at any time, from anywhere (even from their shirt pockets/purses) using ubiquitous inexpensive computing. It is estimated that the m-commerce market was worth US$3.5 billion in 2000 and will grow to over US$200 billion by 2005 (Abbott, 2002). M-commerce is generally considered to be an extension of e-commerce. In fact, m-commerce has unique characteristics and functionality. Hence, it creates a unique and new business opportunity. Tesco, the United Kingdom-based supermarket, rolled out their mobile service, but the U.S. bank, Wells Fargo, is planning to close down their mobile service later this year due to lack of interest. M-commerce has a number of inherent complexities, as it embraces many emerging technologies: mobile wireless systems, mobile handheld devices, software, wireless protocols, and security. These technologies have rapid product cycles and quick obsolescence. In this chapter, we will examine the opportunities and limitations of m-commerce and concentrate our discussion on mobile phone systems.

Nowadays, wireless Body Area Networks (wBAN) have gained more relevance, in particular in the areas of health care, emergencies, ranging, location, domotics and entertainment applications. Regulations and several wireless protocols and standards have appeared in recent years. Some of them, like Bluetooth, ZigBee, Ultra Wide Band (UWB), ECMA368, WiFi, GPRS and mobile applications offer different kinds of solutions for personal area communications. In this chapter, body area network channel modelling will be described; also, a brief description of the applications and state-of-the-art of regulation and standardization processes pertaining to these kinds of networks will be presented. For each topic, the chapter shows not only the main technical characteristics, but also the technical problems and challenges in recent and future research. Finally, the chapter provides an analysis of Body Area Networks, opinions about the future and possible scenarios in the short- and medium-term for the development of standards and applications and their impacts on our daily lives.

The abstract should be changed to this new abstract: Research on mobile multimedia mainly focuses on improving wireless protocols in order to improve the quality of services. In this chapter, we argue that another perspective should be investigated in more depth in order to boost the mobile multimedia industry. This perspective is software engineering which we believe it will speed up the development of mobile multimedia applications by enforcing reusability, maintenance, and testability. Without any pretense of being comprehensive in its coverage, this chapter identifies important software engineering implications of this technological wave and puts forth the main challenges and opportunities for the software engineering community.

Authentication is an important part of the authentication authorization and accounting (AAA) schemes and the extensible authentication protocol (EAP) is a universally accepted framework for authentication commonly used in wireless networks and point-to-point protocol (PPP) connections. The main focus of this chapter is the technical details to examine how EAP is integrated into the architecture of next generation networks (NGN), such as in worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX), which is defined in the IEEE 802.16d and IEEE 802.16e standards and in current wireless protocols, such as IEEE 802.11i. This focus includes an overview of the integration of EAP with IEEE 802.1x, remote authentication dial in user service (RADIUS), DIAMETER, and pair-wise master key version (2PKv2).
