The recent development of color coding in tactile pictograms helps people with visual impairments (PVI) appreciate the visual arts. The auditory sense, in conjunction with (or possibly as an alternative to) the tactile sense, would allow PVI to perceive colors in a way that would be difficult to achieve with just a tactile stimulus. Sound coding colors (SCCs) can replicate three characteristics of colors, i.e., hue, chroma, and value, by matching them with three characteristics of sound, i.e., timbre, intensity, and pitch. This paper examines relationships between sound (melody) and color mediated by tactile pattern color coding and provides sound coding for hue, chroma, and value to help PVI deepen their relationship with visual art. Our two proposed SCC sets use melody to improve upon most SCC sets currently in use by adding more colors (18 colors in 6 hues). User experience and identification tests were conducted with 12 visually impaired and 8 sighted adults, and the results suggest that the SCC sets were helpful for the participants.

The combination of 3D FDM printing method and thermal reflow technique was applied to fabricate tactile patterns for visually impaired people. The size controllable 3D tactile patterns were significantly improved in surface smoothness and adhesion strength on papers.

In this paper, a force sensing element having a pillar and a diaphragm is proposed and thereafter fabricated by micromachining. Piezo resistors are fabricated on a silicon diaphragm for detecting distortions caused by a force input to a pillar on the diaphragm. Since a practical arrayed sensor consisting of many of this element is still under development, the output of an assumed arrayed type tactile sensor is simulated by FEM (finite element method). Using simulated data, the possibility of tactile pattern recognition using a neural network (NN) is investigated. The learning method of NN, the number of units of the input layer and the hidden layer, as well as the number of training data are investigated for realizing high probability of recognition. The 14 subjects having different shape and size are recognized. This recognition succeeded even if the contact position and the rotation angle of these objects are changed.
