Abstract. Two species of peridinioid dinoflagellate cyst are described from Late Quaternary lacustrine and fluvial deposits in England and Scotland. Saeptodinium skipseaense sp. nov. has a bipesoid tabulation and a hemiepicystal archaeopyle. Colonsaydinium psilatum gen. et sp. nov. has a compound archaeopyle interpreted as 213P (1–2i 3–5″). The morphology of the archaeopyle suggests that this may be the cyst of a species with cinctoid tabulation. Both taxa are found only in sediment laid down in base-rich, non-turbulent, relatively deep fresh water.

Abstract. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages are described from Recent and Late Quaternary sediments recovered from Vema cores taken in the area of the Greenland – Iceland – Faeroe – Scotland Ridge. The dinoflagellate assemblage interpreted as indicating the Flandrian, “climatic” amelioration occurred in the sediments on the northern flank of the ridge whereas no evidence was found for this amelioration in the cores to the south. In the southern area, cyst assemblages proved an older climatic amelioration possibly of Eemian age. The potential for using dinoflagellate cysts to correlate oceanic and continental shelf areas is stressed.

AbstractThe faunas found in the mountains of central Irian Jaya have experienced dramatic changes through the late Quaternary. Remains of two previously unknown species of large marsupial, Maokopia ronaldi and Protemnodon hopei, have been recovered from unrelated cave and fluvial deposits which today occur in dense upper montane forest. Direct dating of the finds has not as yet been possible, but stratigraphic, sedimentologic, and palynologic evidence indicates that these species lived near a climatic treeline in subalpine grassland in the late Pleistocene. At higher altitudes a rockshelter provided the second known mid-Holocene record of Thylogale christenseni and Thylogale sp. cf. brunii, apparently extinct grassland wallabies. The two largest remaining subalpine mammal species are being locally exterminated by hunting, leaving only a large murid, Mallomys gunung, which weighs less than 2.0 kg. The area thus records the disappearance of a grassland-adapted fauna. The possum Pseudocheirops cupreus dominates in modem hunting returns, although this species is totally absent from the local fossil records. It may thus be in the process of invading a vacated and disturbed niche from the upper montane forest.

As part of studies of the onshore hydrocarbon potential in East Greenland undertaken by the Geological Survey of Greenland (GGU), a project was initiated with the purpose of describing the dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous succession in East Greenland (72°76°N) and correlating the exposed sections throughout the region (Nøhr-Hansen, 1993). Based on the rather sporadic occurrence of macrofossils the Lower Cretaceous sediments of East Greenland was previously dated as Aptian to Albian (Spath, 1946; Maync, 1949; Donovan, 1953, 1955, 1957). Maync (1949) reported the total exposed thickness of the ‘Aptian-Albian series’ to be more than 2000 m, whereas Surlyk (1990) noted that the Lower Cretaceous shale succession reached a cumulative thickness or 1000 m. Furthermore, Donovan (1972) reported that Hauterivian and Barremian sediments were unknown in East Greenland. Dinoflagellate cysts recorded from 40 sections throughout the region have now dated the Lower Cretaceous sequence as Barremian to Albian, and correlation of sections yields a cumulative thickness of approximately 1500m (Nøhr-Hansen, 1993).

Detailed investigation of the essentially complete uppermost Miocene through Lower Pleistocene sequence in Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Hole 603C, western North Atlantic, has revealed the presence of the new dinoflagellate cyst speciesLejeunecysta hatterasensis, Lejeunecysta interrupta, Corrudinium devernaliae, andPyxidinopsis vesiculata, as well as the acritarchsLeiosphaeridia rockhallensisHead new species andLeffingwellia costatanew genus and species. Independent magnetobiostratigraphic control of DSDP Hole 603C constrains the ranges of these new species.Lejeunecysta interruptan. sp. appears to range no higher than lowermost Pliocene at 5.2 Ma,Pyxidinopsis vesiculatan. sp. has a range top at about 4.5 Ma in the Lower Pliocene,Corrudinium devernaliaen. sp. has a well-defined range of 4.7–4.1 Ma within the Lower Pliocene, andLeiosphaeridia rockhallensisn. sp. has a similarly well-defined range of 4.4–3.9 Ma within the Lower Pliocene. The presence ofLeiosphaeridia rockhallensisn. sp. in the Ramsholt Member of the Coralline Crag Formation, eastern England, supports an Early Pliocene age for this member.

The work of which an account is here given was largely carried out from the autumn of 1937 to the spring of 1940, when it was interrupted by the war. In taking it up again (in July 1945) while, facilities for field work are still limited, the author feels it useful to publish results as they stand and indicate where further work is considered advisable.In examinations of the free-swimming bottom fauna of the Tamar and other estuaries, attention was inevitably drawn to the populations of Gammarus species, which make up the greater bulk of it. Before quantitative observations were planned, some interesting points came to light with regard to the qualitative composition of populations. This aspect lent itself more readily to study and, though byno means a new field for exploration, soon proved worth examining ingreater detail than previous workers had attempted.The broad fact of a replacement of one Gammarus species by another in passing up an estuary was well enough known, though exact knowledge for the British Isles only starts from the time when G. zaddachi Sexton was recognized as a regular member of the upper estuarine fauna of the Tay (Bassindale, 1933; Alexander, Southgate & Bassindale, 1935) and of the Deben (Serventy, 1935). This species proved to be the main brackish-water species overlapping with the marine G. locusta (L.) near the seaward end, and with the fresh-water G. pulex (L.) at the river end (or ‘head’) of the estuary. The status in estuaries of two other brackish-water species, G. duebeni Lillj. and G. chevreuxi Sexton, remained obscure.

An allochthonous block of the Nordenskjöld Formation from north-west James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula has yielded a diverse marine palynoflora. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from the 185 m thick sequence are described and compared with similar microfloras previously described from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Madagascar. A mid Tithonian (Late Jurassic) age is suggested for the section. One new genus, Helbydinium gen. nov. and four new species, Helbydinium scabratum sp. nov., Leptodinium acneum sp. nov., Leptodinium posterosulcatum sp. nov. and Rhynchodiniopsis foveata sp. nov. are described.

Abstract. The type material of six dinoflagellate cyst species from the Late Oligocene to Middle Miocene of northwest Germany, described originally by Gerlach (1961), is reillustrated and redescribed. It is shown to include representatives of nine species. Areosphaeridium (ex: Baltisphaeridium) pectiniforme is found to be a senior synonym of Areosphaeridium multicornutum Eaton. Systematophora placacantha is considered to be a senior synonym of Cleistosphaeridium (ex: Baltisphaeridium) panniforme (Gerlach). The new combination Rhynchodiniopsis tenuitabulata (Gerlarch) is proposed. Revised diagnoses for these three species and for Leptodinium membranigerum (Gerlach), Achomosphaera triangulata (Gerlach) and Lejeunecysta hyalina (Gerlach) are proposed. The morphology of a form described here for the first time, and tentatively attributed to Phthanoperidinium, is considered perhaps to imply a separate origin for the Phthanoperidiniaceae: for that reason familial, rather than tribal, rank is preferred for that group. The stratigraphical ranges of the nine species here recognised and of two others of Gerlach’s species redescribed in earlier papers are detailed; elimination of misattributed forms means that these ranges are shorter than the published literature suggests.
