Abstract. A detailed analysis was made of benthonic foraminiferal distribution patterns and morphogroups in the late Albian “Amadeus Segment” of the Aptian-Albian organic-rich Scisti a Fucoidi Formation outcropping over a widespread area of the Umbria-Marche region, Central Italy. Rhythmic changes in the trophic structures and composition of benthonic foraminiferal assemblages suggest cyclical fluctuations of the sea floor environment which appear to be orbitally induced. Benthonic foraminiferal assemblages varied significantly through the section and appear to contain a strong paleoecological signal. Fluctuations in both bottom water oxygenation and the surface primary productivity as a result of the orbital forcing are interpreted to have been the primary controls on benthonic foraminiferal distribution patterns.

Abstract. A combined geochemical and micropalaeontological study of the late Albian ‘Amadeus Segment’ of the Aptian–Albian organic-rich Scisti a Fucoidi Formation in central Italy shows that planktic foraminiferal assemblages record changes in abundance and composition which are markedly related to CaCO3 and Total Organic Carbon content of the sediments. The distribution pattern of different genera seems to record changes in nutrient supply and surface water temperature. Changes in palaeoceanographic regime are also reflected in abundance, composition and trophic structure of benthic foraminiferal assemblages as a response to variations of oxygen content and organic flux to the sea floor.

The presence of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber L. has been recently confirmed with two separated populations in Tuscany (Central Italy) and probably represents the result of an unofficial release. In late spring and summer 2021, seven reliable records of Eurasian beaver have been collected in Umbria and other neighbouring regions, implying that the distribution of this large rodent is even wider than previously reported. In this short work, we updated the distribution of this protected species in Central Italy, by collecting and mapping all the confirmed occurrences. Beavers were proved to be present throughout the Tiber (Tevere) river basin in both provinces of Umbria, and another individual has been road-killed in the Marche region, near the border with Tuscany. Other single signs of presence occurred in Emilia Romagna and Latium. The only hair sample we were able to collect confirmed it as the Eurasian beaver species. No reliable evidence is available on the number of free-ranging beavers in Central Italy, and systematic monitoring is needed. Before any management and conservation action, further data are required concerning distribution range, potential origin, social perception, and the effects on the ecosystems.

The lingulate brachiopod Schizocrania (Trematidae, Discinoidea) is reviewed. Ptychopeltis is definitively synonymized with Schizocrania, because new data indicate that convexity of the shell, profile of the anterior margin commissure, density of the dorsal valve costellation, ornamentation of the ventral valve and shape of the pedicle notch are worthless for separation of these genera. Four Ordovician species of Schizocrania are reported from the Barrandian area: S. multistriata (Darriwilian), S. hornyi (Sandbian), S. incola (Sandbian) and the new species S. equestra sp. nov. (Katian). Occurrence of Schizocrania striata is confirmed for the first time around the S/D boundary in the Barrandian area. Schizocrania has a wide geographic range with mid-Ordovician to early Devonian occurrences in Laurentia, Avalonia, West Gondwana and the Silurian occurrence in Baltica. Schizocrania was the earliest lingulate brachiopod adhering to floating objects in an open sea (both living cephalopods and their empty drifting shells), but it was highly opportunistic, and used any vacant hard surface on the sea floor (conulariids, strophomenid brachiopods, trilobites) as a suitable substrate for settlement of the larva. Decline of the genus coincided with disappearance of planktic graptolites, and might have been caused by competition of rapidly evolving planktic dacryoconarids, increased predation pressure, and rebuilding of the trophic structure in the early Devonian seas.

The raw ham’s ripening process contributes to the development of numerous biochemical reactions, mainly affecting proteins and lipids and allowing to obtain an adequate texture and a characteristic flavor. This article reports the results of histologic investigations carried out on 5 different anatomic regions from raw hams manufactured in the Fermo Province, Marche Region, Central Italy. Raw ham specimens were collected at the 10 following time intervals throughout the ripening process: 1) “Time 0”, when ripening was started, 2) one month, 3) three months, 4) four months, 5) eight months, 6) nine months, 7) twelve months, 8) eighteen months, 9) twentythree months and 10) twenty-eight months after the ripening process began, respectively. Different microscopic findings of variable extension and degree were observed, with the vast majority of them being interpreted as dehydration- and proteolysisrelated modifications. In conclusion, morpho- histological investigations may represent a valuable aid in raw ham’s ripening analysis.

A method is proposed by which the degree of attrition of the tests of certain foraminifera species, such as Globorotalia menardii and Globorotalia tumida, is used to “scale” the amount of CaCO3 that has been dissolved from sediment. The scale is calibrated experimentally in the laboratory. The method has been applied to three calcareous cores from the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. It is shown that the original CaCO3 contents in these cores were high (82–95%) and relatively uniform compared to the present down-core values. About 65 to 85% of the originally deposited CaCO3 has been dissolved, corresponding to dissolution rates on the order of 0.1-0.3 moles/cm2/yr. These results indicate that appreciable solution could have occurred on sea floor rich in calcareous sediments and that the variation in CaCO3 content in a core may have resulted largely from dissolution. The difference in the degree of solution between glacial and interglacial sediments in these cores is not so distinct, with ⋍ 10% less intense dissolution during glacial times on the average. However, the dissolution minimum occurring around the late Wisconsin glaciation (10,000–20,000 yr B.P.) previously noted in several cores elsewhere is confirmed. At that time, near the site of core M70 PC-20 in the southwest Pacific, the CO32− concentration of the bottom water is estimated to have been approximately 5% higher than the present value, and the calcite lysocline was about 300 m deeper. To evaluate possible variations in CaCO3 deposition rate across the glacial-interglacial transitions requires precise age control, which the present study lacks.

The number of diatom valves and fragments per gram of surface sediment in the Atlantic Ocean accurately reflects diatom abundance in the overlying waters, without any evidence of significant lateral drift during settling to the sea bottom. The distribution pattern of the number of resting spores per gram is similar to that for the whole and fragmented diatom valves. Fresh water diatoms and opal phytoliths are abundant in the sediments off the west coast of Africa where they have been deposited by the Trade Winds.Despite the relatively small number of core tops analyzed, the abundance and distribution patterns of diatoms in the sediments exhibit striking similarities to the patterns of primary productivity, phosphates, and annual production of silica in suspension in surface waters. Areas with high phosphate values and primary productivity and, therefore, areas of upwelling can be inferred from the quantitative distribution of diatoms in the sediments. Q-mode factor analysis, based on the abundance of forty-two species in thirty-seven core tops, produced six diatom species assemblages whose distributions provide additional information on the positions of certain water masses and major currents.Since the data on the quantitative distribution of diatom valves as well as on the diatom assemblages in the sediments of the Atlantic Ocean today allow prediction of certain water mass characteristics and circulation patterns of the overlying waters, they therefore, permit the reconstruction of paleoceanographic circulation patterns in ancient Atlantic Oceans, using the diatom distribution in sediments from dated horizons.
