Abstract We point out an enhancement of the pair production rate of charged fermions in a strong electric field in the presence of time dependent classical axion-like background field, which we call axion assisted Schwinger effect. While the standard Schwinger production rate is proportional to $$ \exp \left(-\pi \left({m}^2+{p}_T^2\right)/E\right) $$ exp − π m 2 + p T 2 / E , with m and pT denoting the fermion mass and its momentum transverse to the electric field E, the axion assisted Schwinger effect can be enhanced at large momenta to exp(−πm2/E). The origin of this enhancement is a coupling between the fermion spin and its momentum, induced by the axion velocity. As a non-trivial validation of our result, we show its invariance under field redefinitions associated with a chiral rotation and successfully reproduce the chiral anomaly equation in the presence of helical electric and magnetic fields. We comment on implications of this result for axion cosmology, focussing on axion inflation and axion dark matter detection.

The linear band crossings of 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals are characterized by a charge chirality, the parallel or antiparallel locking of electron spin to its momentum. These materials are believed to exhibit an E · B chiral magnetic effect that is associated with the near conservation of chiral charge. Here, we use magneto-terahertz spectroscopy to study epitaxial Cd3As2 films and extract their conductivities σ(ω) as a function of E · B. As field is applied, we observe a markedly sharp Drude response that rises out of the broader background. Its appearance is a definitive signature of a new transport channel and consistent with the chiral response, with its spectral weight a measure of the net chiral charge and width a measure of the scattering rate between chiral species. The field independence of the chiral relaxation establishes that it is set by the approximate conservation of the isospin that labels the crystalline point-group representations.

Abstract Upon embedding the axion-inflation in the minimal left-right symmetric gauge extension of the SM with gauge group SU(2)L × SU(2)R × U(1)B−L, [1] proposed a new particle physics model for inflation. In this work, we present a more detailed analysis. As a compelling consequence, this setup provides a new mechanism for simultaneous baryogenesis and right-handed neutrino creation by the chiral anomaly of WR in inflation. The lightest right-handed neutrino is the dark matter candidate. This setup has two unknown fundamental scales, i.e., the scale of inflation and left-right symmetry breaking SU(2)R × U(1)B−L→ U(1)Y. Sufficient matter creation demands the left-right symmetry breaking scale happens shortly after the end of inflation. Interestingly, it prefers left-right symmetry breaking scales above 1010 GeV, which is in the range suggested by the non-supersymmetric SO(10) Grand Unified Theory with an intermediate left-right symmetry scale. Although WR gauge field generates equal amounts of right-handed baryons and leptons in inflation, i.e. B − L = 0, in the Standard Model sub-sector B − LSM ≠ 0. A key aspect of this setup is that SU(2)R sphalerons are never in equilibrium, and the primordial B − LSM is conserved by the Standard Model interactions. This setup yields a deep connection between CP violation in physics of inflation and matter creation (visible and dark); hence it can naturally explain the observed coincidences among cosmological parameters, i.e., ηB ≃ 0.3Pζ and ΩDM ≃ 5ΩB. The new mechanism does not rely on the largeness of the unconstrained CP-violating phases in the neutrino sector nor fine-tuned masses for the heaviest right-handed neutrinos. The SU(2)R-axion inflation comes with a cosmological smoking gun; chiral, non-Gaussian, and blue-tilted gravitational wave background, which can be probed by future CMB missions and laser interferometer detectors.

A field description of spin-density-wave (SDW) in a quasi-two-dimensional metal with open Fermi surface in magnetic field, is proposed. The SDW transition temperature, T c (H), and the Hall conductivity σxy, are calculated. The dependence T c (H) is found to be different from that of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model, in particular, a threshold field, H c , found its natural explanation. It is proved that the quantized Hall conductivity arises from the chiral anomaly terms in the effective action provided there is pinning of chemical potential in the gap of extended states.
