This paper presents an implementation of an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method for simulating violent water impinging jet flow problems. The presented SPH method involves three major modifications on the traditional SPH method, (1) The kernel gradient correction (KGC) and density correction are used to improve the computational accuracy and obtain smoothed pressure field, (2) a coupled dynamic solid boundary treatment (SBT) is used to remove the numerical oscillation near the solid boundary and ensure no penetration condition, (3) a free surface condition, which is obtained from the summation of kernel function and volume, is used to describe the water jet accurately. Different cases about violent impinging jet flows are simulated. The influences of impact velocity and angles are investigated. It is demonstrated that the presented SPH method has very good performance with accurate impinging jet patterns and pressure field distribution. It is also found that the pressure time histories of observation points are greatly influenced by the rarefaction wave from surrounding air. Closer distance from free surface can lead to quicker decay of the pressure time history.

The stilling basin has been one of the most powerful hydraulic structures for the dissipation of the flow energy. Meshfree and particle methods have special advantages in modeling incompressible flows with free surfaces. In this paper, an integrated smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is developed to model energy dissipation process of stilling basins. The integrated SPH includes the kernel gradient correction (KGC) technique, the dynamic solid boundary treatment, [Formula: see text]-SPH model and density reinitialization. We first conducted the simulations of dam-breaking and hydraulic jump to validate the accuracy of the present method. The present simulation results agree well with the experimental observations and numerical results from other sources. Then the discharge process of stilling basin with baffle-blocks is simulated with the integrated SPH. It is demonstrated that the detailed discharge process can be well captured by this method. The energy dissipation effect of stilling basin could be significantly improved by the baffle-blocks. The structure and position of the baffle-block directly affect the energy dissipation effect, while the height of the baffle-block has big influence on the drainage capacity.

The presented SPH method involves two major modifications on the traditional SPH method: (1) kernel gradient correction (KGC) and density correction to improve the computational accuracy in particle approximation and (2) RANS turbulence model to capture the inherent physics of flow turbulence. In the simulation, artificial compressibility for modeling incompressible fluid and ghost particles for treating solid boundaries are both applied. The presented SPH has been applied to two dam-breaking problems. We demonstrated that the presented SPH method has very good performance with more accurate flow patterns and pressure field distribution.

Earlier work on a water-hammer technique for high-rate forming of sheet metal has been extended to include work on deep drawing using lead plugs. A study of the pressure-time history of a deforming blank during its initial movement is reported. An assessment of the overall efficiency of the process has been made and is found to be about 50 per cent; this is an order of magnitude better than that found with comparable electro-hydraulic and explosive methods.

In this paper, the impact pressures of two different base forms are comparatively studied using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. It is summarized from previous works that the improved weakly compressible SPH model shows better performances than incompressible SPH model in numerical simulations of free surface flows accompany with large deformations and strong discontinuities. Such advantages are observed in numerical accuracy, stability and efficiency. The weakly compressible SPH model used in this paper is equipped with some new correction algorithms, among which include the density reinitialization algorithm and a new coupled dynamic Solid Boundary Treatment (SBT) on solid boundaries. The new boundary treatment combines the advantages of both the repulsive boundary treatment and the dynamic boundary treatment, intending to obtain more stable and accurate numerical results. A benchmark test of dam breaking is conducted to prove the reliability of the numerical model used in this paper. Two representative cases, among which one has one cavity and the other one has three cavities, are numerically investigated and compared to support the conclusion that the base form with cavities generally experience lower local and overall impact pressures than the base form of flat plate. It is found that with the application of cavities on the bottom, the peak values of the boundary pressure near central bottom significantly decrease, leading to smaller force load and better structural stability. The mechanisms of such phenomenon might be the pressure absorption effect conducted by the cavities.

The radiation-diffraction potential of a ship advancing in waves is studied using the three-dimensional frequency-domain forward-speed free-surface Green function (Brard 1948) and the forward-speed Green integral equation (Hong 2000). Numerical solutions are obtained by making use of a second-order inner collocation boundary element method which makes it possible to take account of the line integral along the waterline in a rigorous manner (Hong et al. 2008). The present forward-speed Green integral equation includes not only the usual free surface condition for the potential but also the adjoint free surface condition for the forward-speed free-surface Green function as indicated by Brard (1972). Comparison of the present numerical results of the heave-heave wave damping coefficients and the experimental results for the Wigley ship models I, II and III (Journee 1992) has been presented. These coefficients are compared with those calculated without taking into account of the line integral along the waterline in order to show the forward speed effect represented by the waterline integral when it is properly included in the free-surface Green integral equation. Comparison of the present numerical results and the equivalent time-domain results (Hong et al. 2013) has also been presented.

A new method of calculating the pressure field in the simulation of two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible, free surface fluid flow by use of a marker and cell method is presented. A critical feature of the new method is the introduction of a finer mesh of cells in addition to the regular mesh of finite volume cells. The smaller (micro) cells are used only near the free surface, while the regular (macro) cells are used throughout the computational domain. The movement of the free surface is accomplished by the use of massless surface markers, while the discrete representation of the free surface for the purpose of the application of pressure boundary conditions is accomplished by the use of micro cells. In order to exploit the advantages offered by micro cells, a new general equation governing the pressure field is derived. Micro cells also enable the identification and treatment of multiple points on the free surface in a single surface macro cell as well as of points on the free surface that are located in a macro cell that has no empty neighbors. Both of these situations are likely to occur repeatedly in a free surface fluid flow simulation, but neither situation has been explicitly taken into account in previous marker and cell methods. Numerical simulation results obtained both with and without the use of micro cells are compared with each other and with theoretical solutions to demonstrate the capabilities and validity of the new method.

The discussion is based on results gathered during the first two years of a 3 years research program for the benefits of Groupe Finot-Conq, Naval Architects. The introduction presents the objectives of the program: Setting up a practical method using numerical and experimental available tools to design fast planing sailing yachts. The aim of this paper is to compare advantages and disadvantages of four different kinds of CFD codes which are linear and non-linear potential flow approach, RANSE solver using finite differences method and RANSE solver using volume of fluid method. The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of the Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France) has developed those three approaches so those homemade codes will be used for this study. The first one is REVA, a potential flow code with a linearised free surface condition. ICARE is a RANSE solver using finite differences method with a non linear free surface condition. It is extensively used for industrial projects as for sailing yachts projects (ACC for example). ISIS-CFD is a RANSE solver using finite volume method to build the spatial discretization of the transport equations with unstructured mesh. The latter is able to compute sprays for fast planing ships but is also the slower in terms of CPU time. In addition, we had the opportunity to test FS-FLOW which is a potential flow code with a non linear free surface condition distributed by FRIENDSHIP CONSULTING. Numerical results for the four codes are compared with the other codes' results as with tank tests data. Those tank tests were made using captive model test technique on two Open60' models. Reasons of the choice of the captive model technique are explained and experimental procedures are briefly described. Comparisons between codes are mainly based on the easiness of use, the cost in CPU time and the confidence we can have in the results as a function of the boat speed. Flow visualizations, pressure maps, free surface deformation are shown and compared. Analysis of local quantities integrated or by zone is also presented. Results are analyzed focusing on the ability of each code to represent flow dynamics for every speed with a special attention to high speeds. The practical question raised is to know which kind of answers each code can bring in terms of tendencies evaluation or sensitivity to hull geometry modifications. The main goal is to be able to judge if those codes are able to make reliable and consistent comparisons of different designs. Conclusion is that none of the codes is perfect and gather all the advantages. It is still difficult to propose a definitive methodology to estimate hydrodynamic performances at every speed and at every stage of the design process. Knowing each code limitations, it appears more coherent to use each of them at different stages of the design process: the quickest and less reliable to understand the main tendencies and the longest and more precise to validate the final options.

The paper addresses the problem of deriving the nonlinear, up to the second order, crest wave height probability distribution in front of a vertical wall under the assumption of finite spectral bandwidth, finite water depth and long-crested waves. The distribution is derived by relying on the Quasi-Deterministic representation of the free surface elevation in front of the vertical wall. The theoretical results are compared against experimental data obtained by utilizing a compressive sensing algorithm for reconstructing the free surface elevation in front of the wall. The reconstruction is pursued by starting from recorded wave pressure time histories obtained by utilizing a row of pressure transducers located at various levels. The comparison shows that there is an excellent agreement between the proposed distribution and the experimental data and confirm the deviation of the crest height distribution from the Rayleigh one.
