Description of Tetrahymena empidokyrea n.sp., a new species in the Tetrahymena pyriformis sibling species complex (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea), and an assessment of its phylogenetic position using small-subunit rRNA sequences

Ciliates infected 0.25% of adult Aedes sp. mosquitoes collected in Guelph, Ontario. Morphological observations of live and stained specimens indicated that these ciliates belonged to the Tetrahymena pyriformis sibling species complex. This study provides the first well-documented case of insects being infected by a species in the T. pyriformis complex. Mating experiments demonstrated that these "mosquito" ciliates were reproductively isolated from previously described biological species in the complex, and are designated a new species, Tetrahymena empidokyrea n.sp. Phylogenetic analysis using SSrDNA sequences suggested that T. empidokyrea n.sp. is either basal to all species in the genus Tetrahymena or basal to one of the two main lineages in that genus.

A new species of diplogastrid nematode, Levipalatum texanum n. gen., n. sp., was isolated from scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Texas and baited from soil in Virginia, USA. Levipalatum n. gen. is circumscribed by stomatal and pharyngeal morphology, namely a long, hooked dorsal tooth connected to a ‘palate’ projecting anteriad and mediad, subventral telostegostomatal ridges of denticles, and the dorsal radius of the pharynx bulging anteriad. The males of the new species are distinguished from most other Diplogastridae by the frequent presence of ten pairs of genital papillae. Phylogenetic relationships inferred from 11 ribosomal protein-coding genes and a fragment of the small subunit rRNA gene strongly support L. texanum n. gen., n. sp. to be a sister group to Rhabditolaimus, which lacks all the stegostomatal and pharyngeal characters diagnosing the new genus. The new species expands comparative studies of the radiation of feeding morphology that are anchored on the model organism Pristionchus pacificus. The phylogenetic position of L. texanum n. gen., n. sp. indicates a new case of convergent evolution of hermaphroditism in Diplogastridae.

This paper describes the morphological features based on standard methods and estimates their phylogenetic position using small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) sequences of a Uroleptus (Caudiholosticha) antarctica n. sp. population investigated from moss of the Greenwich Island, Antarctica. The morphology of Uroleptus (Caudiholosticha) antarctica n. sp. is characterized as follows: 213.0–238.0×67.5–74.5 μm size in vivo; contractile vacuole located slightly above left of mid-body; cortical granules lacking; three frontal and two frontoterminal cirri; five to six transverse cirri; one pretransverse cirri; one right and one left marginal rows; six to seven dorsal kineties; three caudal cirri.

Nematococcomyces oberwinkleri sp. nov. is described and illustrated on living twigs of Rhododendron sp. from Yunnan Province, China. It has ascospore appendages similar to the type species N. rhododendri, but differs in its eight-spored asci, ascospore shape, and the gelatinous sheath around the ascospores. Combined large subunit (LSU) rDNA and mitochondrial small subunit (mtSSU) DNA sequences were used to infer the phylogenetic position of Nematococcomyces in the Rhytismatales. Nematococcomyces species formed a monophyletic clade. Pestalotiopsis-like, filiform apical appendages of the ascospores and identity of the associated plant are important characteristics for the genus.

Two new species of the Torodora karismata species complex, T. parakarismata Park, sp. nov. and T. sabahana Park, sp. nov., are described from Sumatra, Indonesia, and Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, respectively, and a sibling species of Torodora leucochlora (Meyrick), T. niphadodes Park, sp. nov., is described from the Philippines. The Torodora new species are easily distinguished from congeners by having dark-fuscous wings with various sizes of whitish costal patches or the orange-white wings and body. Illustrations of adults and genitalia for the new species are provided, as well as keys to the species for each the two species-complexes.

Abstract A new species of micromorphic articulate brachiopod (Rhynchonellida) Lambdarina jugowiensis sp. nov., from the upper Visean (Sokolec Beds) of central Sudetes, SW Poland, is described. The studied specimens are calcified, what makes them unique in respect of their state of preservation. The material is represented by a full range of growth stages; from brephic to gerontic. Based on its morphological features and the palaeogeographical distribution of all its known species, two main evolutionary lines are proposed for the genus; the Australian and the European ones. Lambdarina was widely distributed in the equatorial-tropical waters of marginal seas of the Palaeotethys Ocean, mostly during Mississippian time.

A new species, Eudorylaimus piceae n. sp., extracted from rhizosphere soil of Picea crassifolia from Inner Mongolia, China was identified. The new species is characterized by these combined characters: body length of 1.03–1.27 mm; lip region distinctly offset; odontostyle 20–22 μm and 1.1–1.4 times the lip region diameter in length; odontophore 1.1–1.2 times the odontostyle length; basal expansion of pharynx occupying 42%–50.5% of the total neck length; genital system didelphic-amphidelphic; vulva transverse; vagina extending inwards 32%–43%; V value averaging more than 60; pars refringens vaginae with two trapezoidal sclerotizations and pars distalis vaginae weakly sclerotized; prerectum 72–107 μm long, 2.3–3.3 times the anal body diameter, and rectum 1–1.6 times the anal body diameter in length; tail conoid and bent ventrally, c’ value 1.5–1.8 and males unknown. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of 18S small subunit rDNA and the D2-D3 expansion region of 28S rDNA are presented.
