The effectiveness of propanidid was tested by comparing it with cocaine hydrochloride, urethane, and traicaine methanesulfonate, anaesthetics already established for studies of early ontogeny in fishes. Free embryos of the brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, and 7-day-old amargosa pupfish, Cyprinodon nevadensis amargosae, were anaesthetized with dilute solutions of these drugs. The times taken until the blood elements ceased moving through the capillary loops of the developing caudal fin were compared. Propanidid was found to be superior to the other drugs tested in maintaining the longest duration of unaltered blood flow.

SUMMARYEighty-seven of 175 laboratory raised F1 generation brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) were resistant to experimental Cryptobia salmositica infection. Susceptibility to the pathogen was not related to age nor to route of infection. Plasma of resistant charr lysed the parasite under in vitro conditions while those of susceptible fish did not. Sperm from 4 susceptible and 4 resistant male charr, from 8 F1 families, were used to fertilize eggs from 2 hatchery raised susceptible charr. Susceptibility of progenies (F2 families) was determined 4 weeks after inoculation of the parasite. All progenies (seven F2 families) of 4 susceptible males were susceptible to experimental infection and their plasma did not lyse the parasite. It was presumed that these susceptible progenies were homozygous recessive (rr), and that the resistant allele was dominant. All progenies (two F2 families) of 1 resistant male (presumed RR) and 2 susceptible females were all resistant to infection and their plasma lysed the parasite. The ratio of resistant to susceptible charr in 6 other F2 families from the other 3 resistant males (presumed Rr) and two susceptible females was about 1:1. The results suggest a single Mendelian locus which determines innate resistance to C. salmositica infection in brook charr and that it is possible to breed Cryptobia-resistant fish.

A method is being developed which not only measures cerebral blood flow as a static quantity but also its changes with time. For that purpose a semiconductor device ascertains the proportion of intracerebral81 Rb and 81mKr activities. By opening the haemato-encephalic barrier in animal experiments a sufficient concentration of intracerebral81 Rb could be attained and the modified blood circulation after step-wise ligature of all brain arteries brought into relation to the corresponding Rb/Kr quotient. Over the range from undisturbed to completely interrupted cerebral blood flow this quotient varied up to 25% of its initial value.

Abstract Erythroid progenitor cells in +/+ and Sl/Sld fetal livers manifested as burst-forming units-erythroid (BFU-E) and colony-forming units- erythroid (CFU-E) were assayed in vitro during early development. The proportion of BFU-E was higher as mutant than in normal fetal livers. On the other hand, the proportion of CFU-E was less in the mutant than in the normal. These results suggest that the defect in Sl/Sld fetal hepatic erythropoiesis is expressed at the steps of differentiation that effect the transition from BFU-E to CFU-E.

Anti-soluble substance antibodies and neutralizing substances, which develop following infection with the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis, appear to be separate entities. The times of appearance and regression of the two antibodies are different in both man and the guinea pig; the antisoluble substance antibodies appear earlier and remain a shorter time. Moreover, mice develop them but no demonstrable neutralizing substances. Injection of formalin-treated, virus-free extracts containing considerable amounts of soluble antigen fails to elicit anti-soluble substance antibodies and to induce immunity in normal guinea pigs; administration of such preparations to immune pigs, however, is followed by a marked increase in the titer of anti-soluble substance antibodies in their serum. On the other hand, suspensions of formolized washed virus are effective in normal guinea pigs in stimulating both anti-soluble substance antibodies and protective substances, and in inducing immunity to infection.

AbstractWe investigated morphological changes of retinal arteries to determine their association with the blood flow and systemic variables in type 2 diabetes patients. The patients included 47 non-diabetic retinopathy eyes, 36 mild or moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (M-NPDR) eyes, 22 severe NPDR (S-NPDR) eyes, 32 PDR eyes, and 24 normal eyes as controls. The mean wall to lumen ratio (WLR) measured by adaptive optics camera was significantly higher in the PDR groups than in all of the other groups (all P < 0.001). However, the external diameter of the retinal vessels was not significantly different among the groups. The mean blur rate (MBR)-vessel determined by laser speckle flowgraphy was significantly lower in the PDR group than in the other groups (P < 0.001). The WLR was correlated with MBR-vessel (r = − 0.337, P < 0.001), duration of disease (r = 0.191, P = 0.042), stage of DM (r = 0.643, P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (r = 0.166, P < 0.037), and presence of systemic hypertension (r = 0.443, P < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that MBR-vessel (β = − 0.389, P < 0.001), presence of systemic hypertension (β = 0.334, P = 0.001), and LDL (β = 0.199, P = 0.045) were independent factors significantly associated with the WLR. The increased retinal vessel wall thickness led to a narrowing of lumen diameter and a decrease in the blood flow in the PDR group.

In this paper, new forms of nano topological spaces through a neighborhood system of vertices for a digraph will be presented and studied. We apply the connection between digraph theory and nano topological spaces in the human heart as an example in real life. We have a blood flow system in the human heart with respect to oxygenated and deoxygenated blood circulation. Our study will be definitely helpful to develop a tool in solving the blood flow system in the human heart. Finally, we have succeeded in improving Proposition 1.6 in [7] and Proposition 4.4.1 in [11].

This study characterizes the seasonal anadromous movements of a brook charr population and compares its biological and energetic characteristics with charr spending summer in freshwaters. Downstream movements monitored at a counting fence over 3 yr were most intense in spring but occurred until fall and were positively correlated with rapid increases of water level. The timing of movements varied from year to year. Smaller charr were most subject to being swept downstream compared with freshwater residents, and most trout were concentrated near the mouth of the river. These patterns suggest that the downstream movements of charr in this system are passive. Upstream migrants had a higher condition factor and a lower tissue water content than freshwater residents, indicating that downstream movements result in a faster accumulation of energetic reserves during summer. However, the fortuitous character of anadromous migrations as well as the absence of differences in the biological characteristics (growth, size at maturity, fecundity, egg size) suggests that anadromous and resident fish belong to a single population whose yearly migrant component could be randomly determined.
