A new subfamily, Cydnodromellinae, in the family Phytoseiidae (Acari: Gamasina)

A new subfamily, Cydnodromellinae, is proposed in the family Phytoseiidae. Members of the subfamily are characterized by the unique chaetotaxy of the podoscutum, which has five pairs of setae (j3, z2, z4, s4, s6) on its lateral area, with seta z3 absent. There are two genera in this new subfamily. Platyseiella Muma is monotypic, represented by the type-species, P. platypilis (Chant). Cydnodromella Muma includes three species groups and six species: the negevi group (C. negevi (Swirski and Amitai) comb.nov.), the pilosus group (C. pilosus (Chant), type-species of the genus Cydnodromella), and the alveolaris group (C. alveolaris (De Leon) comb.nov., C. borinquensis (De Leon) comb.nov., C. sanictus (De Leon) comb.nov. and C. tunapunensis (De Leon) comb.nov.). Galendromimus Muma and Typhlodromus (Galendromimus) Muma sensu van der Merwe are designated as junior synonyms of the genus Cydnodromella and Cydnoseius cordiae Muma, Typhlodromus medanicus El Badry, and T. zaheri El Badry are designated as junior synonyms of C. negevi. Systematic concepts pertaining to the species in the two genera are reviewed, and descriptions of each genus, species group, and species are given. Keys to the adult females of the species groups in the genus Cydnodromella and to the species in the alveolaris group are provided.

The tribe Chantiini Pritchard and Baker is proposed for elevation to subfamily status in the family Phytoseiidae. Members of the subfamily Chantiinae are characterized by their unique dorsal chaetotaxy: a combination of five pairs of setae (j3, z2, z3, z4, s4) on the lateral area of the podoscutum, which differs from other phytoseiid species that also have five pairs (j3, z2, z4, s4, s6), and from the more common four (j3, z2, z4, s4) or six (j3, z2, z3, z4, s4, s6) pairs in the family. Two genera, Chantia Pritchard and Baker and Diadromus Athias-Henriot new status, are included in the new sub family. The genus Chantia is monotypic, represented by the type-species C. paradoxa Pritchard and Baker. The genus Diadromus includes four species: D. contiguus (Chant) comb, nov., the type species; D. dominiquae (Schicha and Guttierrez) comb, nov.; D. separatus (Wu and Li) comb. nov.; and D. tengi (Wu and Li) comb. nov. The systematic concept of the new subfamily Chantiinae in relation to other subfamilies in the family Phytoseiidae is outlined. Previous systematic concepts concerning the species in the two genera are reviewed. Keys to the female adults of the genera, the species groups, and the species are provided. Descriptions of each genus and species are given.

The genus Metallactus has been controversial since its introduction due to the ambiguous nature of the original diagnosis. This has caused some confusion in the taxonomy of Neotropical Pachybrachina. In this work the morphology of endophallus, which is useful for the characterization of species groups in several groups of Coleoptera, including Cryptocephalinae, has been analyzed. This has proven to be a good resource also in the taxonomic treatment of the species belonging to the genus Metallactus. After a careful survey on most of the species described so far, the endophallus shape in Metallactus turned out to be remarkably distinctive and very promising in the delimitation of species groups. The present work includes: a) a new diagnosis of the genus Metallactus on the basis of the aedeagal anatomy; b) the designation of the type species of the nominal genus; c) the revision of a first species-group of the genus, including the type species, hereinafter called Metallactus kollari species-group. Before this revision, catalogues had been reporting 13 species attributable to this group, in the present work three species have been synonymized and seven have been described as new to science. Therefore, the group includes 17 species. The species described as new are: Metallactus rileyi n. sp., M. bellatrix n. sp., M. longicornis n. sp.; M. londonpridei n. sp., M. regalini n. sp., M. bezoar n. sp., M. guarani n. sp. The new synonymies are as follows: Metallactus albipes Suffrian, 1866 (= M. nigrofasciatus Suffrian, 1866 n. syn.), M. albifrons Suffrian, 1866 (= M. flavofrontalis Jacoby, 1907 n. syn.), M. dodecastictus Suffrian, 1866 (= Griburius nigritarsis Jacoby, 1907 n. syn.). The lectotypes of all previously described species have been designated. The new synonymies, the name-bearing type fixations and designations and the nomenclatural acts have been critically discussed. An identification key for the species-group is also provided.

The type species of the genus Acidiella Hendel is A. longipennis Hendel, which is known as a widely distributed species in South East Asia. Specimens of A. longipennis are rarely found in insect collections, but I was able to examine a number of Myanmar specimens collected by R. Malaise during the Swedish Expedition in 1934, and reported as A. longipennis by M. Hering in 1938. As a result, three related species were sorted out from these specimens. They look very much alike except for the dorsal abdominal patterns (difficult to see in dried specimens) and postabdominal structures. I here provide detailed descriptions of and a key to A. longipennis, A. spinipenis, sp. nov., and A. kambaitiensis, sp. nov. They are here defined as the A. longipennis species group based on a single synapomorphy: vesica of glans ventrally with 7–9 tiny spines. This is a unique characteristic never found in any other species of the tribe Trypetini as well as the family Tephritidae. I am providing this information as a starting point to refine the currently confused concept of the genus Acidiella.

Meleonoma Meyrick, 1914 is treated as a genus of the family Autostichidae based on the recent study. Fifty species are transferred from the genus Cryptolechia to Meleonoma, and eight Meleonoma species groups are proposed for the taxonomic convenience based on both molecular data and morphological study. Eight species groups include: the malacobyrsa group, the segregnatha group, the annulignatha group, the fasciptera group, the jigongshanica group, the dentivalvata group, the facialis group, and the acutiuscula group. Diagnostic characters and representative illustrations of each species group are provided. A discussion on the proposed species groups is given, and a checklist of all the 88 described Meleonoma species is provided.

The genus Anystipalpus Berlese, 1911, of uncertain prior placement in the superfamilies Ascoidea or Dermanyssoidea, is redescribed, based on reexamination of type and other material of the type-species, A. percicola Berlese, and of material representing Anystipalpus livshitsi (Eidelberg) new combination and two new species, A. labiduricola n. sp. and A. kazemii n. sp. Anystipalpus nataliae (Eidelberg) new combination and Anystipalpus ukrainicus (Sklyar) new combination are determined to be junior synonyms of A. percicola Berlese and A. livshitsi (Eidelberg), respectively, new synonymies. The genus is known thus far only from adult females phoretic under the elytra of carabid beetles and the tegmina of labidurid earwigs in Eurasia. The relationships between it and the closely related Antennoseius Berlese, 1916 and Vitzthumia Thor, 1930, are reviewed, and the options for the family level placement of these genera are reconsidered. Attention is given to some gnathosomatic attributes that are commonly overlooked in description of species of these closely related genera. Phoresy and the role of adult female morphs in the life history of these mites, as well as the extraordinary phoretic association of one species with earwigs are discussed.

Two new species of the family Pontellidae, Labidocera kaimanaensis and Pontella papuaensis, are described and illustrated from specimens collected in Arguni Bay, West Papua, Indonesia. L. kaimanaensis belongs to the L. detruncata species-group, is distinguishable from other species of this group by the very elongated Ur1 (urosomite 1) and the asymmetrical P5 in the female and the Pdg5 (pediger 5) and P5 in the male. P. papuaensis does not belong to any of the known five groups of Indo-West Pacific Pontella, in having Ur1 with a beak-like posterodorsal process and almost symmetrical Re’s (exopods) of P5 in the female, a rostrum with double convex lenses, the chela of the right P5 with a bilobed thumb, and the inner margin of that chela armed with a large process, in the male. The establishment of four new species-sub-groups of L. detruncata, i.e., L. d.-cervi, L. d.-farrani, L. d.-kaimanaensis, and L. d.-sinilobata, as well as the establishment of a P. papuaensis species-group, are proposed.

The elateriform family Callirhipidae Emden, 1924 is catalogued. The family contains 14 genus-group taxa, of which 10 are currently considered as valid and four as synonyms. The family contains 214 available species-group names, of which 175 represent currently valid species and subspecies, and 39 are synonyms. For each taxon, all references known to the author are listed. For species-group taxa, type locality, type material, current status and known distribution are given. Lists of unavailable names and taxa excluded from the family Callirhipidae are presented. A systematic checklist of the family is appended. A newly conceived convallis species group in the genus Typhlodromus Scheuten is proposed. Characters for the group are described and descriptions of the adult females of each species are given. Keys to the liliaceus and convallis species groups as well as keys to the seven species in the latter group are also given.

Species of eight species-groups (seven named and one unnamed) of Simulium (Simulium) Latreille are revised chiefly based on the adult female and male genitalia. Four species-groups are each divided into more than two groups. Thus, the S. christophersi species-group is divided into two (S. christophersi and S. nebulicola species-groups), the S. griseifrons species-group into six (S. griseifrons, S. grossifilum, S. chungi, S. crocinum, S. indicum and S. yadongense species-groups), the S. malyschevi species-group into two (S. malyschevi and S. pavlovskii species-groups), and the S. melanopus species-group into three (S. melanopus, S. dumogaense and S. iridescens species-groups). The S. crassifilum species-group is merged with the S. variegatum species-group. Simulium fulvipes (Ono) of the former S. malyschevi species-group and S. dentastylum Yang, Chen & Luo of Simulium s. str. species unplaced to species-group are removed from the subgenus Simulium because their male styles are subequal in length to the coxites. A revised classification of species of the 15 species-groups including eight new species-groups of Simulium (Simulium) is presented. Keys to 20 species-groups of Simulium (Simulium) in the Oriental Region are provided for adult females and males.

The genus Pholcus Walckenaer, 1805 belongs to the family Pholcidae C.L. Koch, 1850, which is a species-rich group, including 94 genera and 1,716 species (World Spider Catalog 2019). Pholcus is mainly distributed in the Palaearctic, Indo-Malayan, Afrotropical, and Australasian Region (Huber 2011). The only exception is the Pholcus kingi group with ten species in the southeastern USA (Huber 2011). The genus includes species from a wide range of habitats, e.g., between buttresses, in small holes or caves, among and under large rocks, or on the underside of green leaves (Huber 2011). Many taxonomic changes were implemented on the latest molecular phylogeny analyses (Eberle et al. 2018; Huber et al. 2018), including nine new genera resulted from splitting Pholcus: Cantikus Huber, 2018, Kelabita Huber, 2018, Kintaqa Huber, 2018, Meraha Huber, 2018, Muruta Huber, 2018, Paiwana Huber, 2018, Pribumia Huber, 2018, Teranga Huber, 2018, and Tissahamia Huber, 2018. The genus Sihala Huber, 2011 was synonymized with Pholcus and the species Pholcus agadir Huber, 2011 was moved to Micropholcus Deeleman-Reinhold & Prinsen, 1987 (Huber et al. 2018). Nevertheless, Pholcus continues to be the most species-rich genus in Pholcidae and currently includes 328 species belonging to 21 species-groups [previously: 393 species and 32 species-groups] (Huber 2011; Huber et al. 2018; World Spider Catalog 2019). One of the generic species-groups, the Pholcus nenjukovi species-group, contains eight species and occurs in northeastern Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Russia (the single record of Pholcus sidorenkoi Dunin, 1994 from Russia is dubious, see Huber 2011: 339). In the present study, we describe a new species from southwestern Tibet, China assigned to the Pholcus nenjukovi species-group. This distribution represents the eastern most record for the species-group (Fig. 1).
