Captive coyotes were studied for den digging and use (N = 10) and pup care activities (N = 4 adults and 2 yearlings). Method of construction and configuration of dens is described. Pup care activities of individual pack members are documented, including: den tending, ano-genital grooming, nursing, feeding solid food, transferring pups between dens, and alarm barking. It is suggested that endogenous factors be considered in addition to environmental causes for the phenomenon of multiple den use and frequent transferral of pups which may have evolved as a method of decreasing the risks of pup predation.

Predator avoidance may be a reason why Swift Foxes (Vulpes velox) are one of the most burrow-dependent canids in North America. Typically Swift Foxes have multiple dens, which they frequently move among. As part of a larger study to reduce Coyote (Canis latrans) related mortalities on Swift Foxes, we installed artificial escape dens in areas occupied by Swift Foxes on Rita Blanca National Grassland, Dallam County, Texas. For this paper, our objective was to determine the effects of artificial escape dens on Swift Fox den use patterns. From January 2002 to August 2004 we captured, radio-collared, and monitored 55 Swift Foxes. We documented annual number of dens used, rate of den use (fidelity), distance between dens, den area, and den sharing. We compared treated (artificial dens installed) and untreated (no artificial dens) areas but found no differences in annual number of dens (P = 0.64; mean = 8), rate of den use (P = 0.96; mean = 35%), mean distance between dens (P = 0.99; mean = 2,311 m), den area (P = 0.55; mean = 5.72 km2), or den sharing (P = 0.46; mean = 42% of time). We did not observe an effect of artificial escape dens on Swift Fox den use patterns probably because artificial escape dens were designed for temporary escape cover rather than diurnal den use.

Background: Obesity is an emerging pandemic considered to be an outcome of change in lifestyle owing to more processed food and the use of mechanical locomotives. Obesity has not only appeared as a problem in the esthetic appearance of an individual rather is a serious health issue due to its associations with various chronic diseases such as coronary and cardiovascular problems, hypertension, osteoarthritis, type-II diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and certain cancers. It is estimated that 30 percent of the world’s population, i.e. approximately 2.1 billion people, are victims of obesity. In addition to environmental causes, various genes and a group of genes are reported to be increasing the suceptibility of obesity. Objective: Pakistan is a heterogeneous population, an amalgam of various races, therefore, narrowing down the list of obesity-associated genes and their functional variance could help molecular biologists to select potential SNPs in the Pakistani population for molecular diagnosis and treatment. Method: The extraction of a set of obesity-associated genes has been performed by using Polysearch2. SNPs for each gene are retrieved from dbSNP. RegulomeDB and SNPinfo tools have been used for the functional analysis of SNPs retrieved against the Pakistani population. For the prediction of potential deleterious SNPs, SIFT, Polyphen-2, MUTTASTER, MUTASSESSOR, and LRT (likelihood ratio test) are utilized. Functional analysis of potential deleterious SNPs has been performed by studying protein stability and mapping of identified SNPs to protein structure. For the protein stability analysis, I-Mutant and SNPs3D have been used. Results: Four genes FTO, POMC, LEPR, and MC4R and further analysis revealed 3 deleterious SNPs in FTO, 4 in POMC, 1 in LEPR, and 1 in MC4R. Conclusion: This research was designed to identify obesity-associated genes and the most impactful deleterious SNPs in these genes. These findings will be helpful for the molecular biologists and pharmacists to design better and focused diagnosis and treatment strategies.

The primary aim of the calf rearer is to ensure a successful transition from non ruminant to ruminant status while achieving rapid growth and an early intake of solid food. Newbold, Blake and Hagges (1991), found that increasing the concentration of ME in either the starter or milk replacer will not promote more rapid growth, but will simply reduce the rate of starter consumption. This present study investigated the extent to which the energy density of a calf starter ration affected starter intake and liveweight gain in calves receiving a fixed allowance of a high energy milk replacer with ad libitum access to solid calf starter rations.

This study looks at the educational experiences, from the preschool years to advanced professional training in STEM fields, of a targeted sample of 10 (7 male, 3 female) early college entrants in China who later became professors at prestigious USA research universities. The purpose of the study was to find out (1) what some identifiable endogenous factors were about these individuals that facilitated the success of their accelerated learning and development; (2) what kinds of exogenous factors (e.g., environmental opportunities, resources, support) they experienced from childhood to adulthood that enhanced the successful acceleration experience; and (3) how these endogenous and exogenous factors facilitated their developmental transitions every step of the way, especially from the role of a student to that of an aspiring scientist. These questions are addressed in light of evolving complexity theory. Retrospective interviews were used for data collection. Thematic analysis of the codes from interview data yielded a conceptual map. A distinct set of endogenous and exogenous factors at different developmental junctures were identified, and their dynamic interplay was delineated to account for accelerated trajectories toward a scientific research career. The theoretical significance and practical implications of the study for talent development in science are discussed.

DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), interrupting the genetic information, are elicited by various environmental and endogenous factors. They bear the risk of cell lethality and, if mis-repaired, of deleterious mutation. This negative impact is contrasted by several evolutionary achievements for DSB processing that help maintaining stable inheritance (correct repair, meiotic cross-over) and even drive adaptation (immunoglobulin gene recombination), differentiation (chromatin elimination) and speciation by creating new genetic diversity via DSB mis-repair. Targeted DSBs play a role in genome editing for research, breeding and therapy purposes. Here, I survey possible causes, biological effects and evolutionary consequences of DSBs, mainly for students and outsiders.
