Ligictaluridus Beverley-Burton, 1984 has been proposed for ancyrocephalid monogeneans found on North American catfishes (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae). The genus is characterized by the following: penis curved, sclerotized, tubular; accessory piece with proximally articulating base and distally projecting limb of varying size and shape; dorsal and ventral hamuli with slender, curving shaft, dorsal hamuli smaller than ventral; dorsal and ventral transverse bars bowed with flange projecting medianly; larval hooks of variable size and shape. The type species, Ligictaluridus pricei (Mueller, 1936) Beverley-Burton, 1984, together with L. monticellii (Cognetti de Martiis, 1924) n. comb., L. floridanus (Mueller, 1936) Beverley-Burton, 1984, and L. mirabilis (Mueller, 1937) n. comb., is redescribed. The finding of L. monticellii on Ictalurus nebulosus taken in Lake Erie, Ontario, is a new record for North America. All the above species, as well as L. bychowskyi (Price and Mura, 1969) n. comb., are transferred from Cleidodiscus Mueller, 1934. The effects of variable cover-slip pressure and different preservation techniques on the morphology of some of the sclerotized structures are discussed.

The cyrtospiriferid brachiopod genus Tenticospirifer Tien, 1938, is revised based on restudy of the type species from the Frasnian (Late Devonian) of the Russian Platform. As revised the genus includes cyrtospiriferid species with pyramidal ventral valves, catacline ventral interareas, a narrow delthyrium, few sinal plications, and lack a median dorsal septum and pseudodeltidium. All species retained in the genus are of Givetian and Frasnian age. All Famennian age species described from South China and North America are rejected from the genus. It appears that Tenticospirifer evolved during the early Givetian in western Europe and remained endemic to that region during the remainder of the Givetian. Successive migrations of Tenticospirifer from eastern Laurussia to North America, then to South China and possibly Australia, coincided with middle and late Frasnian eustatic sea level rises, respectively. The North American species Spirifera cyrtinaformis Hall and Whitfield, 1872, and related species identified as Tenticospirifer by North American workers, are reassigned to Conispirifer Lyashenko, 1985. Its immigration to and widespread dispersal in carbonate platforms of western Laurussia, northern Gondwana and tropical island arcs (?) coincided with a major late Frasnian eustatic sea level rise. The new family Conispiriferidae is proposed with Conispirifer Lyashenko, 1985, selected as the type genus. The new family also includes the new genus Pyramidaspirifer with Platyrachella alta Fenton and Fenton, 1924, proposed as the type species. The affinity of the new family remains uncertain pending restudy of key genera currently included in the Superfamily Cyrtospiriferoidea. Available data from the Devonian brachiopod literature indicate that species of Pyramidaspirifer are restricted to late Frasnian deposits of central and western North America.

Museum and field restudy of Cryptolithus from all known geographic and stratigraphic occurrences in eastern North America shows that the principal variable character in this genus is the number of fringe pit arcs. Because this character varies within populations and even single individuals, it cannot be used to distinguish the earlier, typologically defined species of the genus. Instead, a neotype is designated here for the type species, Cryptolithus tessellatus Green, 1832, and morph designations are used for all pit arc variants. Over the time span considered, the species increased the number of pit arcs, but the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms responsible cannot be identified with certainty.

AbstractThe noctuid subfamily Heliothidinae, which is represented in North America by 158 species, is redefined, largely on the basis of male genitalic characters. Of genera included in the subfamily in McDunnough's 1938 check list, only four are recognized as valid, these being Heliothis Ochs., Schinia Hbn., Heliolonche Grt., and Melaporphyria Grt. Helicoverpa Hdwk., which was described subsequent to the appearance of McDunnough's list, and Protoschinia which is described as new here, are also included. Grotella Harv., Hemigrotella B. & McD., and Neogrotella B. & B. are not considered heliothidine genera and are removed to the Stiriinae.Eight genera, which have been assigned to the Amphipyrinae because they lack the mid and hind tibial setae characteristic of other heliothidine components, have also been incorporated in the Heliothidinae; these genera are Microhelia Hamp., Heliothodes Hamp., Baptarma Sm., Eutricopis Morr., Derrima Wlk., Erythroecia Hamp., Rhodoecia Hamp., and Pyrrhia Hbn. Because of the close similarity in structure and habits between these genera and those previously mentioned, the two groups are considered to constitute a monophyletic assemblage within the Noctuidae, despite the discrepancy with respect to mid and hind tibial setae.A key to the 14 North American genera of the Heliothidinae is presented. Descriptions of genera and figures of the male and female genitalia of the type species of all valid genera and of many genera in synonymy are provided. Canthylidia Butl. and Timora Wlk. are newly synonymized to Heliothis, and Heliosea Grt. to Heliolonche Grt. A check list of the North American Heliothidinae is appended to the text.The possible phylogenetic relationship of the Heliothidinae to the Stiriinae is discussed. The latter group is raised from tribal rank in the Amphypyrinae to subfamily rank; a number of genera are added to it, and a provisional redefinition of the subfamily is presented.

AbstractBacidia rosellizans S. Ekman is described as new to science. Morphologically, the new species is similar to the type species of the genus, B. rosella (Pers.) De Not., particularly in the pale pink and pigment-deficient apothecia and in having the proper exciple and upper part of the hymenium inspersed with minute crystals that consist at least partly of atranorin. Bacidia rosellizans, however, differs in having a thin whitish thallus, smaller apothecia and a thinner apothecial margin, a dense layer of crystals along the excipular rim, shorter and narrower ascospores with fewer septa, and septate conidia. Whereas B. rosella is a species occurring in the nemoral zone of Europe and possibly northernmost Africa and parts of Asia (but not North America), B. rosellizans is found mainly on Populus and Salix in taiga. This species is currently known from Sweden, Russia, Canada and the USA. It was erroneously treated as Bacidia rosella in a monograph of North American corticolous species of Bacidia and Bacidina by Ekman (in Opera Botanica 127, 1996).

AbstractThe tribe Coryphiini Hatch is redefined to include six genera and 18 species from North America. Two new genera are described: Gnathoryphium (type-species G. mandibulare n. sp.) and Holoboreaphilus (type-species Boreaphilus nordenskioeldi Maklin). Seven new species are described: Coryphium nigrum from the northeastern United States and Subhaida californica, S. aptera, S. monticola, S. utahensis, S. sinuata, and Gnathoryphium mandibulare from western North America. The genus Occiephelinus Hatch from western North America and Planeboreaphilus Shibata from Japan are considered junior synonyms of Coryphium Stephens. The western North American species formerly placed in Ephelinus Cockerell are transferred to the genus Coryphium. Pseudohaida ingrata Hatch is transferred to the genus Subhaida Hatch. Boreaphilus americanus Notman is placed in synonymy with B. henningianus C.R. Sahlberg.All genera and species are described. Habitus drawings, and line drawings of the antenna, labrum, maxilla, mandible, mentum, and labium are presented for at least one species of each genus. The aedeagus is illustrated for all the species except two that are known only from females.Of the species treated, three are Holarctic in distribution, four are restricted to eastern North America, and 11 are endemic to the mountainous areas of western North America.All available biological information for each species is included and a key is presented to aid in the identification of all the genera and species of the tribe in North America.

Generic descriptions and illustrated accounts of type species are provided for four hyphomycetous genera with hyphopodiate hyphae: Sarcinella, Questieriella (n. gen.), Mitteriella, and Endophragmiopsis. Questieriella spp. produce curved to sigmoid 3-septate conidia, and are synanamorphs of Sarcinella and Mitteriella. Five North American species of Sarcinella and their Questieriella synanamorphs are illustrated and described: S. heterospora (teleomorph Schiffnerula pulchra; synanamorph Q. pulchra n. sp.) on Fraxinus; Sarcinella quadrata (syn. Epochnium quadratum) on Fraxinus; S. questieri on Cornus; S. copallina (syn. Stemphylium copallinum) on Rhus, and Sarcinella vernoniae (syn. Stigmella vernoniae) on Vernonia. Helminthosporium prestoniae and Mitteriella craterispermi are illustrated, described, and transferred to Questieriella. The type species of Schiffnerula, S. mirabilis, and of Clypeolella, C. inversa, and briefly described and ascoma initials and Questieriella anamorphs illustrated. Developmental similarities and differences between the teleomorphs of these two genera are considered analogous to those between the meliolaceous Asteridiella and Amazonia. A tabulation is presented of synanamorphs and teleomorphs of Sarcinella, Questieriella, and Mitteriella. Some correlations are suggested. Nearly all Sarcinella species have a Questieriella synanamorph, and the teleomorphs of species with this combination are in Schiffnerula. Other species of Schiffnerula produce Questieriella alone, or no anamorph. Most species of Clypeolella produce only a Questieriella anamorph, some produce none, and one species has a Mitteriella + Questieriella synanamorph combination. Three species described in Clypeolella are transferred into Schiffnerula, C. ricini Rac. (= S. ricini Hansf.), C. gymnosporiae, and C. salaciae. Available evidence suggests that Schiffnerula and Clypeolella are more closely related than is implied by their separation into two families.

The genus Aleurodiscus Rabenh. ex J. Schroet. (sensu lato) is an artificial assemblage of large-spored 'thelephoraceous' hymenomycetes, which can no longer be maintained as a generic unit. The generic limits and the taxonomic position of Aleurodiscus (sensu stricto) (TYPE SPECIES: A. amorphus (Pers. per Purt.: Fr.) J. Schroet.) have been discussed by the writer (1964) in a separate paper. The present work supplements this earlier work, but is concerned primarily with an appraisal of the non-amyloid-spored Aleurodisci, all of which are removed from Aleurodiscus and either assigned to other recognized genera or relegated to new genera.Accordingly, two new genera and 15 new combinations are devised here to accommodate several species formerly placed in Aleurodiscus (sensu lato). The new genera, one of which is monotypical, are Aleurocorticium Lemke, gen. nov. (TYPE SPECIES: A. acerinum (Pers. per Fr.) Lemke, gen. & comb. nov.) and Licrostroma Lemke, gen. nov. (MONOTYPE: L. subgiganteum (Berk.) Lemke, gen. & comb. nov.). The additional 13 combinations proposed are Aleurocorticium album (Viégas) Lemke, comb, nov., A. alliaceum (Quél.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. candidum (Schw.) Lemke, comb. nov. A. dryinum (Pers.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. griseo-canum (Bres.) Lemke, comb. nov., A. lepra (Berk. et Curt.) AbstractThe systematic position of the North American species described, originally, in the genus Trioxys Haliday is discussed. The following nine taxa are of genus Trioxys sensu strictu: T. (Trioxys) ameraceris Smith, betulae Marshall, new RECORD, bonnevillensis Smith, exareolatus (Viereck), gahani Smith, ibis Mackauer, NEW RECORD, infrequens Smith, utilis Muesebeck; and T. (Betuloxys) compressicornis Ruthe, NEW RECORD. Six species fall into genus Binodoxys Mackauer: B. carolinensis (Smith), coruscanigrans (Gahan), cupressicola (Gahan), NEW COMB., nearctaphidisN. SP., palmerae (Smith), and rhagii (Ashmead).

The oribatid mite family Tegoribatidae has been represented in continental North America by the genera Tegoribates and Tectoribates. Herein, I describe a new genus of Tegoribatidae from North America, Protectoribates, and two new species: Protectoribates occidentalis sp. nov., from forest habitats in western North American, and Tegoribates walteri sp. nov., from forest habitats in California, based on adults and immatures. The descriptions of adults of the type species of Tegoribates, T. subniger Ewing, and other North American species, T. americanus Hammer and T. bryophilus Woolley, are expanded and immatures of T. americanus are described for the first time. Immatures of Protectoribates are apheredermous whereas those of Tegoribates are eupheredermous, though retaining centrodorsal setae. Scutozetes Hammer 1952 is transferred from Tegoribatidae to Ceratozetidae after re-examination of type material. I provide a revised diagnosis for Tegoribates and a key to tegoribatid genera and species for North America. Finally, I provide a revised diagnosis for Tegoribatidae based on world genera.

AbstractThe genus Oethecoctonus of North America is revised. Three species are recognized, of which two are new to science: O. ophrynopus and O. pleuralis. O. oecanthi (Riley), the type-species of the genus, is redescribed and figured. A generic diagnosis of Oethecoctonus and key to North American species are given. The higher classification and world distribution of Oethecoctonus species are discussed.
