As an inexpensive, more versatile alternative to the Coulter counter and image analyzers for the acquisition of size data in biological research, a semiautomated measuring device with associated data storage and retrieval capabilities has been developed. It can be used for measurement of such diverse characters as zooplankton body size and helmet lengths, phytoplankton size, fish scale measurements, fish egg diameters, and general taxonomic features such as body proportions and inter-setule distances. Any organism, or part thereof, which can be scaled to the device's range of approximately 1–7 cm can be quickly and accurately counted and (or) measured.

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectral Measurement Database (NMR-SMDB) was developed for the purpose of organizing and searching NMR spectral data of protein therapeutics, linking spectra to corresponding sample information and enabling quick access to full datasets and entire studies. In addition to supporting internal research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the system could facilitate data access to stakeholders outside of NIST, and future versions of the database software itself could be installed by others for their own data storage and retrieval.

AbstractBackground:Advances in high-throughput molecular biology, genomics and epigenetics, coupled with exponential increases in computing power and data storage, have led to a new era in biological research and information. Bioinformatics, the discipline devoted to storing, analysing and interpreting large volumes of biological data, has become a crucial component of modern biomedical research. Research in otolaryngology has evolved along with these advances.Objectives:This review highlights several modern high-throughput research methods, and focuses on the bioinformatics principles necessary to carry out such studies. Several examples from recent literature pertinent to otolaryngology are provided. The review is divided into two parts; this first part discusses the bioinformatics approaches applied in nucleotide sequencing and gene expression analysis.Conclusion:This paper demonstrates how high-throughput nucleotide sequencing and transcriptomics are changing biology and medicine, and describes how these changes are affecting otorhinolaryngology. Sound bioinformatics approaches are required to obtain useful information from the vast new sources of data.

Recently, the security of heterogeneous multimedia data becomes a very critical issue, substantially with the proliferation of multimedia data and applications. Cloud computing is the hidden back-end for storing heterogeneous multimedia data. Notwithstanding that using cloud storage is indispensable, but the remote storage servers are untrusted. Therefore, one of the most critical challenges is securing multimedia data storage and retrieval from the untrusted cloud servers. This paper applies a Shamir Secrete-Sharing scheme and integrates with cloud computing to guarantee efficiency and security for sensitive multimedia data storage and retrieval. The proposed scheme can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements for the cloud-hosted multimedia data and applications. In addition, our scheme is also based on a source transformation that provides powerful mutual interdependence in its encrypted representation—the Share Generator slices and encrypts the multimedia data before sending it to the cloud storage. The extensive experimental evaluation on various configurations confirmed the effectiveness and efficiency of our scheme, which showed excellent performance and compatibility with several implementation strategies.

 Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) have been widely used in warehousing systems to speed up load movements and save storage space. ASRS is an integrated system that is equipped with a controller and arm for the collection and storage of goods. This paper discusses the results of developing a system for taking and storing goods for various loads. The prototype element consists of a mechanism for retrieving, placing and application for data collection into the database. In this research, the design and development of ASRS was carried out to be applied in the storage of products of various sizes which is suitable for small size industries. The development process includes investigating features that have been developed in the ASRS, operating procedures, hardware selection and software development in accordance with the mechanism designed. Numerical control which moves the carrier element with high resolution is applied to be able to place the load in a changing position. Development and testing is carried out to ensure the performance of the tool runs well and the data storage that includes the identification and size of the load can be recorded properly.

RFID technologies represent a common standard for data storage and retrieval that could improve collaboration and data sharing between noncompeting organizations. With the advent of RFID (radio frequency identification), organizations have the opportunity to rethink how their organization will be. Unlike companies in the United States and Europe which are mandated by large retailers or government departments, most Taiwan companies are investing in RFID without pressure. The article explores the factor affecting radio frequency identification adoption applications in Taiwan. Its objective is to summarize the ways in which organizations are thinking about their possible uses in a wide variety of companies and industries. An empirical investigation (n=134) found seven factors affecting RFID adoption within Taiwan. They are operation efficiency, manufacturing efficiency and supply chain efficiency, organization context, investment cost, market environment, and technology characteristic. By providing insight into these important factors, this article can help further understanding of their role in the adoption and use of RFID. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.
