New records and extensions of range of reptant decapod Crustacea from the northeastern Pacific Ocean

New distribution records for 13 species of reptant decapod Crustacea are reported. Calocaris investigatoris, Calastacus stilirostris, Hapalogaster grebnitzkii, Mursia gaudichaudii, and Oregonia bifurca are new to the waters off British Columbia and Pagurus hemphilli, P. quaylei, and Discorsopagurus schmitti are new to Alaska. Callianassa gigas, Pachycheles pubescens, Petrolisthes cinctipes, Scleroplax granulata, and Pagurus caurinus have been found farther north than previous published records. It has been determined that Hapalogaster grebnitzkii has not been found in California and that the southernmost known record is northern British Columbia.

Orbiniella nuda, new species, is newly described from Washington. Naineris quadricuspida, Pygospio elegans, Pherusa negligens, Asclerocheilus beringianus, Euzonus williamsi, Barantolla americana, Decamastus gracilis, Mediomastus capensis, and Stygocapitella subterranea are newly recorded from Washington or from Washington and British Columbia. Most of these species have not previously been reported from the cold temperate northeastern Pacific Ocean. In addition, new descriptive information is provided for some species.

Three hermit crabs, Pagurus caurinus, P. quaylei, and P. stevensae, from British Columbia are described as new. Calastacus quinqueseriatus Rathbun, Paguristes ulreyi Schmitt, Pagurus cavimanus (Miers), P. samuelis (Stimpson), Parapagurus pilosimanus Smith, Munidopsis quadrata Faxon, and Chionoecetes tanneri Rathbun have not been recorded from the area between 48° and 55°N and 123° and 135°W, and also show considerable extensions of the known ranges. Within the confines of the same area, Callianassa gigas Dana, Paguristes turgidus (Stimpson), Pagurus cornutus (Benedict), P. hemphilli (Benedict), Orthopagurus minimus (Holmes), Petrolisthes cinctipes (Randall), Sceleroplax granulata Rathbun, Pinnotheres pugettensis Holmes, P. taylori Rathbun, and Planes marinus Rathbun are reported with extensions to known ranges. Pagurus capillatus (Benedict), P. tanneri (Benedict), Paralomis verrilli (Benedict), and Lithodes couesi Benedict are recorded, apparently for the first time from British Columbia, although known from both north and south of this area.

Betapista dekkerae, new genus and new species, is described. The generic diagnoses for Laphania and Scionides are improved after inspection of the holotypes of the type species. Eupolymnia heterobranchia (syn., E. crescentis) is redescribed. Additions to the descriptions, based on study of type material, are made for Laphania boecki (new record, Northeast Pacific), Neoamphitrite robusta (syn., Scionides dux), Neoleprea californica and N. spiralis, Pista brevibrunchiata (new record, British Columbia [B.C.], Washington [WA], Japan) and P. fratrella, and Polycirrus californicus (new record, B.C., WA, syn., P. perplexus). Other additions to the descriptions are provided for Amaeana occidentalis (new record, B.C.) and Pista cristata. Two further Pista species (one from the Skagerrak) and five Polycirrus species are charcterized but not named. Other new records are Lanassa venusta venusta (B.C.), Lysilla loveni, and Neoleprea japonica (the two latter for Northeast Pacific). Lysilla pacifica, Pista fasciata, and P. fratrella are shown not to be members of the fauna of British Columbia and Washington. Presumably, neither is Polycirrus caliendrum. New observations on the types of the Antarctic Polycirrus kerguelensis and Ereutho kerguelensis are noted.Key words: Betapista n.g., Neoleprea, new records, Northeast Pacific, Pista, Polycirrus, Scionides, Terebellidae

Seventeen species of pelagic Polychaeta from the northeastern Pacific are recorded. Of these, five (Sphaerosyllis pirifera Claparède, Dorvillea kefersteini McIntosh, Spiophanes cirrata Sars, Magelona sp., and Flabelligera affinis Sars) are species which, whilst not exclusively pelagic, are known to swim at some stage, particularly as larvae. One record (Pedinosoma curtum Reibisch) is new to the Pacific Ocean, two (Pontodora pelagica Greef and Callisona nasuta Greef) are new to the northeastern Pacific region, and four (Pelagobia longicirrata Greef, Lopadorhynchus uncinatus Fauvel, Sagitella kowalewskii Wagner, and Callizona angelini (Kinberg)) are records of northerly extensions of distribution. The first observation of a larval Cossura (probably of C. longocirrata Webster and Benedict) is recorded. Poeobius meseres Heath is recorded from a number of stations and the classification of Poeobiidae is discussed.Eight species of Siphonophora are listed, all of which constitute new records for the region covered by the present collections. Six species of Mollusca, comprising five Pteropoda and one Heteropoda, are recorded, none of which have been identified previously in northeastern Pacific plankton. Three of the genera of Pteropoda (Anopsia, Thliptodon, and Cliopsis) are characteristic of warmer seas, the other two, and the heteropod, are widely distributed. Of the two species of Tunicata listed one is new to the northeastern Pacific.

Cossura soyeri Laubier and Clymenella torquata (Leidy) are newly recorded for the Pacific Ocean. Praxillella praetermissa (Malmgren) is new to the northeast Pacific. AbstractThe northeastern Pacific Ocean is a preferential location for the formation of closed low pressure systems. These slow-moving, quasi-barotropic systems influence vertical stability and sustain a moist environment, giving them the potential to produce or affect sustained precipitation episodes along the west coast of the United States. They can remain motionless or change direction and speed more than once and thus often pose difficult forecast challenges. This study creates an objective climatological description of 500-hPa closed lows to assess their impacts on precipitation in the western United States and to explore interannual variability and preferred tracks. Geopotential height at 500 hPa from the NCEP–NCAR global reanalysis dataset was used at 6-h and 2.5° × 2.5° resolution for the period 1948–2011. Closed lows displayed seasonality and preferential durations. Time series for seasonal and annual event counts were found to exhibit strong interannual variability. Composites of the tracks of landfalling closed lows revealed preferential tracks as the features move inland over the western United States. Correlations of seasonal event totals for closed lows with ENSO indices, the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), and the Pacific–North American (PNA) pattern suggested an above-average number of events during the warm phase of ENSO and positive PDO and PNA phases. Precipitation at 30 U.S. Cooperative Observer stations was attributed to closed-low events, suggesting 20%–60% of annual precipitation along the West Coast may be associated with closed lows.

The geographical distribution of Muscidae from Latin America has been extended. The following eight genera, including 28 species, were collected: Cyrtoneurina (2 spp.), Cyrtoneuropsis (8 spp.), Dolichophaonia (1 sp.), Neomuscina (7 spp.), Ophyra (1 sp.), Phaonia (2 spp.), Philornis (5 spp.), and Polietina (2 spp.). New records and additional collecting data have been provided for Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica, including reference maps for the species listed.
