Changes in growth and proximate body composition of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were examined for fish of 8–150 g, between 18 and 30C. For most weights, growth of fish (grams/day) was highest at 25C, and lowest in fish at 18C. This was attributable in part to a higher satiation (maximum) feeding level at 25C. For a fixed level of feeding, growth rate (percentage wet weight/day) was highest for fish held at 18C.Lipid content (percentage wet weight) increased with feeding level and was highest at 18C, Moisture content varied inversely with lipid. Protein and ash content did not vary appreciably with temperature, body weight, or feeding level.Maintenance requirement of bass, expressed as grams/day, was about twice that lost during food deprivation, but only slightly different when expressed as kilocalories/day.Energy requirements for nonfecal losses were estimated as 10% of intake energy at all feeding levels. Standard metabolism accounted for 50% of intake energy near maintenance, but only 10% at the satiation feeding level. Growth requirements increased From zero at maintenance to 40% of intake energy at satiation feeding.

Nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) content in largemouth bass accounted for 9% of the total nitrogen content. This level was influenced by feeding level and probably body weight. A consideration for NPN is essential for quantitative protein estimates.

Oxygen consumption attributable to apparent specific dynamic action (SDA) was measured in relation to feeding level and body weight in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, forced to swim at 1.7 body lengths/s (BL/s). Apparent SDA rose curvilinearly with ration size, the coefficient increasing with weight of bass. For a ration of fixed percent body weight/day, apparent SDA increased curvilinearly with weight of bass, the rate being most pronounced at higher levels of food intake. Apparent SDA expressed in energy units as a percent of ration ingested did not differ significantly with weight of fish or meal size. The overall mean apparent SDA ± SD was 14.19 ± 4.19% of the energy ingested. Time required for oxygen consumption to subside to pre-feeding levels increased with ration size and weight of bass.Over the range of swimming speeds from 1.4 to 2.5 BL/s, there were no differences in apparent SDA of similar size bass fed a ration of 4% body weight/day. Similarly, time for elevated levels of oxygen consumption to return to prefeeding rates was independent of swimming speed.

SUMMARYEmpty body weight and body measurements were made on 142 lambs from Border Leicester × Merino and Merino ewes mated to Dorset Horn rams, grazed at three stocking rates and slaughtered at approximately 32·3 kg full body weight (FBW). Carcass composition studies were made on 58 of these lambs. An approximate doubling of growth rate during the first 6 weeks of life occurred between stocking rates for lambs from Merino ewes. A smaller difference was found in lambs from Border Leicester × Merino ewes. Growth rates of lambs from Merinos were significantly lower at all times from birth to slaughter. Stocking rate, breed and sex effects on growth rate resulted in lambs reaching mean weight of 32·3 kg at 80–150 days.A three-way analysis of variance was performed on data for all parameters measured using FBW as a covariate. These parameters were of carcass measurements and composition, and of composition of the internal organs. There were no effects of stocking rate on empty body weight, carcass weight, or any carcass measurements. The weight of dry edible meat was depressed at the high stocking rate due to a higher moisture content. The fresh weight of internal organs was lower at the high stocking rate. A number of sex differences were found. Ewes had lighter carcasses and heavier cannon bones; their edible meat had a higher moisture content and higher ash content than wethers. Eye muscle width was less in ewes than in wethers. Internal organs of ewes had a lower EE % and higher CP % than those of wethers. The only breed type differences were in the weights of internal organs and eye muscle widths at the 9–10th and lOth–llth ribs, and age to slaughter.

The effects of plane of nutrition on the body composition of growing sheep are very apparent when animals are compared at the same age following different nutritional histories. These differences are, however, less obvious when animals of the same breed and sex are compared at the same body weight and at present there is some conjecture whether composition is affected by growth rate. This uncertainty is not limited to fat and protein but includes the bone and ash, fraction and the ash composition.The primary objective of this trial was to study the effects of different growth rates achieved by feeding different amounts of the same concentrate diet on the composition of empty-body gain and on the retention of minerals by growing lambs. A secondary objective was to examine the effect of adding supplementary calcium carbonate to the basal diet at the fast rate of growth.

1. Body shape and carcass composition have been measured in a dated series of Romney-Southdown cross and Australian Merino sheep foetuses.2. Large differences in shape exist between the two breed groups and these result from growth rate differences in certain components of the bone and muscle tissue.3. Carcass composition at any particular foetal weight, however, is more uniform. In relation to body weight, the Merino has a higher proportion of bone in the body but the proportion of muscle is the same in both breed groups. Nevertheless, the distribution of muscle tissue is changed as there s i a higher proportion of muscle in the hind limb of the Romney-Southdown cross.

The bioenergetics of starvation of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) was determined through integrating changes in proximate body composition, energy yields, and changes in weight. Weight losses during starvation showed good correlation with changes in proximate body composition. After adjustments for relative increases in the proportion of moisture were made, tissue utilization and the corresponding energy equivalents were estimated. The energy requirements over the 40-day starvation period were derived from lipid and protein at a 60:40 ratio.

Early harvested first cut (EFC) timothy silage was fed to five reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L.) taken from their natural summer pasture and brought to Tromsø for feeding trial. The calves were housed indoors in metabolism cages and fed EFC timothy silage ad lib. during the trial, which lasted from late November 1994 until the end of February 1995, when animals subsequently were slaughtered. Daily feed intake, gastrointestinal (GI) anatomy, body weight and body composition of the animals were examined. Timothy silage {Phleum praténse) was harvested 21 June, 1994 in Tromsø, prewilted and stored as round bales containing 97% leaves. The EFC silage contained 42.1% dry matter (DM), and 18.1% crude protein, 20.7% cellulose, 16.9% hemicellulose and 28.0% water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) of DM. Mean feed intake (DM) 24 hours after the trial started (day 1) was 9-4 g/kg body mass (BM) (S.D.+ 3-9), while the mean daily DM intake during days 15-74 comprised 24.2 g/kg BM (S.D.+ 6.1). All animals except one gained body weight during the trial. The median (range) BM at start and at slaughter was 48.5 kg (34.5¬58.0 kg) and 50.0 kg (42.0-53.5 kg), respectively. Median (range) carcass weight % of BM was 58.0% (51.2-58.7%) and muscle index value 0.0132 (0.0106-0.0176). The median reticulo-rumen (RR) content wet weight (WW) was 4601 g (range 2697-5000 g) comprising 9.3% of the BM, and 85.1% of the total gastrointestinal wet weight content. The median (range) gastrointestinal tract weight was 14.1% of BM (10.7-16.4%). Based on feed intake during the trial and body composition at slaughtet we conclude that first cut timothy silage is suitable as emergency feed to reindeer, as long as it is harvested in early growth stage with high proportion of leaves.

An experimental study was carried out on prey handling time (from initial seizure of prey to completion of swallowing movements) in the grass pickerel (Esox americanus vermiculatus), using bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) as prey. Esox differs from the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), which was studied previously, in having a more specialized dentition. It was found that for individuals of the same mouth width (20 mm), handling time was 40–80% less in Esox for bluegill prey of total length 20–50 mm. Further, "optimal" and maximum size of prey consumed were 56 and 46% larger, respectively, for the esocid. The results are also related to body weight and age in Esox and Micropterus and the ecological significance of the findings is discussed.
