Influence of date of egg production and diet on pheasant chick development

Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus cokhicus) chicks were hatched at weekly intervals for 14 weeks from eggs laid by hens fed two diets of different protein and energy levels. Chicks from each hatch were subjected to two different nutritional planes by feeding them a control diet yielding 2.91 kcal of metabolizable energy per gram and 23.7% protein, and an experimental diet yielding 1.88 kcal of metabolizable energy per gram and 14.3% protein. Weight of the chicks at hatching, and three indices of growth, increase in body weight, length of the tarsal bone, and length of the seventh primary feather, were taken during the first 3 weeks of life. Weights of day-old chicks and their rates of development were unrelated to the chronology of egg production, the sex of chicks, and the diets fed to the parent hen. Differences between rates of development of the chicks were attributed to differences between the amount of protein and energy metabolized from their diets.

This study was carried out to evaluate the energy levels in the diet to obtain better performance rates and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle. One hundred and eighty Bovans Goldline laying hens with 62 weeks of age were used during four 28-day periods. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four metabolizable energy levels (2,650, 2,725, 2,800, 2,875 and 2,950 kcal/kg), each with six replicates of six birds. The energy level of diet did not affect the weight of the egg, yolk, albumen and eggshell, the percentages of yolk, albumen and eggshell, yolk color and egg specific gravity. Feed intake, egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs increased significantly with increasing levels of metabolizable energy. Feed intake decreased linearly as the energy level in the diet increased. The metabolizable energy levels showed a quadratic effect on egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs. The metabolizable energy level of 2,830 kcal/kg was the most appropriate to promote better performance and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle.

Pullets were brought into production on a low-protein corn, soybean meal diet to which various nutrients including essential amino acids, choline, corn oil and feathermeal were supplemented. Production commenced between 18 and 20 wk of age and up to at least 60% production, hens fed the low protein diets (10% CP) produced at least as many eggs and as great an egg mass as these given a 17% protein corn, soybean meal control diet. Pullets fed the corn, soybean meal test diets, peaked at around 80% as compared to slightly over 90% for the control. Egg production immediately fell for birds fed the test diets to around 70% for most of the test treatments. Body weight remained constant or fell after peak production for birds fed the test diets as compared to a normal increase for birds on the control diet. Egg size increased for the test diets at a rate which was comparable to that of the control birds. In a second experiment, with older hens, supplementation of the 10% protein test diet with methionine, lysine, arginine and tryptophan, resulted in intakes of these amino acids which met NRC minimum requirement levels. However, egg mass output was reduced approximately 11% compared to the 17% protein control diet. While intakes of several essential amino acids fell below requirement levels, the degree that valine was calculated to be deficient in both experiments corresponded closely with the reduction in egg mass output of hens fed the test as compared to the control diet. Twenty groups of 36 laying hens in individual cages were fed on one of 5 diets in which the energy:protein ratio was constant. Diets 1 to 5 had crude protein 12.0, 12.9, 14.0, 15.0 and 16.0% and metabolizable energy 8.71, 9.57, 10.27, 11.10 and 11.70 MJ/kg. From 24 to 64 weeks old, egg production of hens given diets 1 to 5 was 71.46, 71.31, 72.51, 71.13 and 69.99%, respectively. Corresponding values of mean egg weight, weekly feed intake and efficiency of feed conversion were 60.51, 60.47, 61.11, 61.02, 61.07 g; 157.16, 147.56, 142.03, 130.37, 126.72 g; 3.674, 3.460, 3.262, 3.031, 3.014 kg feed/kg egg, respectively. 1. A cereal-based diet containing 7.6 mg copper/kg was fed ad lib. to laying hens for up to 48 d. Four other groups were given the control diet to which was added hydrated copper sulphate to provide 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg added Cu/kg.2. Hens were killed on day o and after 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 d. Records were kept of body-weight, food consumption, egg production and egg weight.3. After slaughter blood haemoglobin, packed cell volume, serum Cu and aspartate aminotransfferase- (AAT; EC 2.6. I. I) were measured. The liver, kidneys, a sample of breast muscle, oviduct, ovary and gizzard were weighed. Gizzard, spleen. liver and kidney tissue were examined histologically.4. The Cu, zinc and iron concentrations of liver, kidneys and breast muscle and the manganese concentrations of liver and kidneys were determined.5. Body-weight loss occurred at 500–2000mg added Cu/kg diet. Egg production was depressed by level of added Cu and period of time on the Cu-containing diets.6. Mean liver, kidney, oviduct and ovarian weights per unit body-weight were depressed by Cu in the diet and the effect increased with period of time on the diets. Mean gizzard weight per unit body-weight was increased by dietary added Cu and by time.7. Cu concentrations in the liver were increased by dietary level of added Cu and period of timeon the diet. Zn concentration in liver increased at 1000 and 2000 mg added Cu/kg diet and liver Fe concentration was increased at these levels. Histological examination of the gizzard indicated that the Cu content of the gizzard lining increased with dietary added Cu.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the milk production, body weight, and body condition score (BCS) of ewes fed with different energy levels. Seventy-one ewes were used and distributed in three treatments according to the metabolizable energy (ME, Mcal/kg) levels in the diet: CTL = according to the NRC (2007) recommendation for each stage (gestation and lactation); PLUS = CTL plus 10% of ME per kilogram of dry matter; LESS = CTL less 10% ME per kilogram of dry matter. Body weight and body condition score were evaluated a week before the expected date of parturition, a week after giving birth, and at weaning (60 days). Dairy production was evaluated at 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after giving birth by the indirect method of the two weighing. The experimental design was analyzed as randomized complete blocks. There were no differences on milk production during almost all the lactation curve. Only on day 50 (P = 0.051), CTL was still at peak, while LESS and PLUS had already decreased their production. However, at 60 days, all treatments were already with low production, justifying weaning in this period. Results of weight and BCS showed a significant difference in all periods evaluates. Ewes in the PLUS diet had greater BW and BCS. The BCS before giving birth is expected to be over 3.5 and treatment LESS was the only one that did not achieve this score (2.66, 3.37, 3.83 for LESS, CTL, and PLUS, respectively). At weaning, ewes fed PLUS and CTL had BCS of 3.51 and 2.92, respectively, but treatment LESS had only 1.82. That is prejudicial for the next mating seasonal and this animal. We concluded that LESS diet interfered with the body reserves of sheep.

The effects of raw versus steamed navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) meal, in diets with and without methionine supplementation, on egg production, egg weight, body weight, pancreas weight, mortality, feed consumption and conversion, and energy and nitrogen utilization were determined with laying hens. As the level of raw navy bean meal in the diet increased, egg mass production and body weight gain decreased. Declines in production were largely overcome by steaming the bean meal. Methionine supplementation of both raw and steamed meal diets had no effect on performance. Changes in dietary metabolizable energy and nitrogen retention are discussed in relation to bird performance.

The adverse effects of Cu on body-weight, food intake, egg production and liver, oviduct, ovary, gizzard and bile weights were rapidly reversed by removal of added Cu from the diets.6. Greatly enhanced liver Cu concentration resulted from feeding the high-Cu diets but this effect was rapidly reversed on removal of added Cu from the diets. Liver Fe concentration showed a less marked but similar effect.7. The Cu concentration of caecal contents was increased by Cu supplementation and rapidly reduced after withdrawal of the Cu-containing diets.

Six diets containing five levels of methionine and two of lysme were each fed to 12 Leghorn and 12 Australorp pullets for a period of 16 weeks Body weight changes, egg production, egg weight and feed intake were measured Although responses to the diets did not differ significantly In univariate analyses, multrvarrate analysis lndicated a srgnificant interaction between breeds and diets. Increased methionine produced small, significant Increases In egg weight, although responses were inconsistent at different levels Body weight gains were not significantly different between diets. Egg production and feed consumption were significantly affected by diet?, but the pattern of response was also inconsistent. A discriminate function analysis showed a consistent response to increased methionine, which indicated that the basal diet was deficient and that the pullets required a total of 0 275% methionine in their diet Lysine supplementation produced a 'significant decrease In feed intake but had no significant effect on any other variable.A multiple regression equation relating metabolizable energy intake to the variables measured in the experiment was calculated and compared with others reported In the literature This was used to predict the requirements of the pullets for a number of essential amino acids.

Two experiments were conducted to study the effect of soybean and/or rapeseed gums (SBG and/or RSG) on general performance and mortality of laying hens. In exp. 1 a total of 1824 SCWL hens of two commercial genotypes (912 of each) were fed a corn-soy-based control diet or this diet to which was added 2.0% be weight of either SBG or RSG. In exp. 2, 1824 hens of the more sensitive genotype used in exp. 1 were fed a control diet or diets containing approximately 15% of gummed and gumless Tower and Candle rapeseed mean (RSM) or gumless Tower RSM to which was added 3.33% Candle gums. The addition of SBG and RS3 to the diet (exp. 1) caused a significant increase in mortality, increased the amount of feed required to produce a kilogram of eggs, and decreased heart and liver weights. Feeding RSM with and without the commercial level (2.0% of the RSM, or in this study 0.3% of the diet) of added gums had no effect on body weight or egg weight. Hen-housed egg production and feed per dozen eggs were significantly depressed by feeding Candle RSM with gums and by feeding gumless Tower RSM to which had been added Candle gums, indicating that Candle gums but not Tower gums are deleterious to laying hens even at the commercial level of addition to RSM. Accumulated mortality to 497d was significantly higher for all groups fed RSM with or without gums compared to the control-fed group. The increase in mortality with this sensitive genotype appeared to be related to the mere presence of RSM in the diet and not due to the presence of gums per se. The major cause of mortality in both experiments was diagnosed as fatty liver syndrome, and from results of exp. 2 appeared to be related to the presence of RSM in the diet and not due to the presence of gums.

AbstractThe effect of energy supply on physical composition of body weight gain between 45 and 100 kg was studied in Large White castrated males (cLW), crossbred Pietrain × Large White castrated males (cPPX) and boars (bPPX). The pigs were either given food ad libitum and kept in individual pens in experiment 1, or allocated to four energy levels (0·70, 0·80, 0·90, and 1·00 ad libitum) and kept in metabolism cages in experiment 2. Daily protein supplies were calculated to be the same at the four energy levels within each type of pig and non-limiting for growth. Five additional animals for each type of pig were slaughtered at 45 kg. Daily tissue gain was measured according to the comparative slaughter technique. The daily lean gain increased with metabolizable energy (ME) intake according to a linear-plateau relationship whereas the daily fat gain increased linearly. The type of pig significantly affected the slope of the relationship between lean gain and ME intake (from 15 to 22 g per extra MJ ME) but not the slope of the relationship between fat gain and ME intake (10 g per extra MJ ME on average). Increased energy intake was associated with increased fatness of body-weight gain, which was higher in cLW and cPP× than in bPP×.
