Life histories and trophic relationships of Trichoptera were studied in a small British Columbia lake. Larvae of 10 caddis species were primarily sediment feeders, 2 were leaf feeders, 3 carnivores, and 1 Banksiola crotchi, an algal feeder in early instars and predaceous in later ones. The final instar larvae of potentially competitive species tended to be separated in time. Caddis larvae were an important component of the diet of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), species being preyed upon sequentially as their later instars appeared in the lake. Larvae were also important as prey of the salamander Taricha granulosa but were less significant in the diets of kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and a second salamander Ambystoma gracile.

Concentrations of molybdenum in tissues of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) from three waters increased only slightly with increase in molybdenum concentration of the water. Fish from high (300 ppb) molybdenum water had mean concentrations of 13–332 ppb on a wet-weight basis; those from low (6 ppb) molybdenum water, 10–146 ppb; and those from trace molybdenum water, 5–118 ppb. Rainbow trout exhibited generally higher molybdenum concentrations than did kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in high molybdenum water. A possible plateau mechanism concerning molybdenum accumulation by salmonids is discussed.

Larval stages of tapeworms were found encysted in the livers of the following fish: 77% of 87 Oncorhynchus nerka (Walbaum), kokanee; 22% of 111 Salmo gairdneri (Richardson), rainbow trout; 13% of 113 Ptychocheilus oregonensis (Richardson), northern squawfish; 3% of 98 Prosopium williamsoni (Girard), mountain whitefish; and 2% of 85 Cottus asper (Richardson), prickly sculpin. The metacestodes were identified to be that of Paradilepis simoni from the number, size, and shape of the rostellar hooks.

Two forms of Salmo gairdneh with different life histories (steelhead and rainbow trout) were compared using restriction endonuclease analysis of mitochondrial DNA. A total of 19 individuals from four populations were studied for each of the two forms, using 14 restriction enzymes. In addition, five cutthroat trout samples were included as an interspecific comparison. These enzymes revealed a total of 81 cut sites, representing a sample of more than 400 nucleotides per fish. Of these sites, 25 were phylogenetically informative, dividing the 43 fish into 10 clonal lines, 8 Salmo gairdneri and 2 Salmo clarki. Results indicated detectable divergence between all geographic populations of steelhead and rainbow trout except Pennask rainbow trout, Coquihalla steelhead, and Wampus Creek rainbow trout. Other steelhead populations analysed showed a closer phylogenetic relationship to each other than to rainbow trout populations analysed. Intraspecific divergence was in most cases 1% or less, with a 1.5% maximum. Interspecific divergence between S. gairdneri and S. clarki was between 2% and 3.5%.

A wild population of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was observed during spawning in the Lardeau River in southeastern British Columbia, in April and May in 1966 and 1967. Nest digging in the first few days of spawning in 1967 was predominantly nocturnal, but diurnal nest digging increased until activity was nearly steady around the clock.Rate of digging (digging bouts per 10-min interval) averaged near five before spawning, rose sharply immediately after spawning, and then decreased. The number of body flexures per bout of digging was near six before spawning, decreased sharply right after spawning, and then rose progressively over a 50-min period. Touching or feeling the bottom of the nest was frequent before spawning and decreased after. The effect of internal stimuli (egg release) and tactile stimuli on digging behavior is considered.

Predation of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) on migrant sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) fry in experimental streams was higher on fry at an earlier development stage, in moonlight by contrast to cloudy night light intensities, at lesser turbidities, and at lower stream velocities. At dusk light intensities, from.05 to.30 ft-c, mortality from predation was inversely related to light intensity. The longer the period of exposure of fry to naturally declining light intensities prior to downstream movement, the lower was the loss to predators. Exposure of predators to high light intensities prior to the downstream movement of fry resulted in decreased fry mortality. Fry that had survived exposure to predators in an experimental stream 1 and 2 days previous were less vulnerable to predation than "naive" fry. Successive exposures further decreased the loss to predation. Fry enumerated at a counting fence suffered less predation than fry not enumerated. Experienced fry moved downstream more rapidly than naive fry.In laboratory aquaria, experienced fry formed compact schools prior to and in response to stimuli, while naive fry formed loose schools or did not school. Experienced fry were less active in responding to stimuli. Enumerated fry resembled experienced fry; nonenumerated fry resembled naive fry.Various techniques of enhancing sockeye salmon fry survival during downstream migration are suggested by these results.

Interannual variations in mean age of maturity tend to be positively correlated among 10 stocks of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) which spawn in rivers emptying into Bristol Bay, Alaska. Taking a comparative approach, I utilized data from British Columbia and Alaska sockeye stocks with different life histories to test alternative hypotheses about sources of these variations in mean age at maturity. The hypotheses included freshwater environment, marine environment, and parental influences. Freshwater hypotheses were rejected and while some parental effects do exist, they are small compared with the effect of events in early marine life. Early marine growth rate data do not exist for these stocks but evidence from five other sockeye stocks shows that fast growth during this period tends to lead to earlier age at maturity.

An experimental introduction of kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) into Lake Huron from egg stocks obtained from British Columbia and several western states of the United States began in 1964. From 1964 to 1969, about 5.5 million kokanee (eggs, fry, and fingerlings) were planted. Estimated minimum returns of adults were 9000, 1200, and 4000 in 1967, 1968, and 1969, respectively. Although most of the returns were recorded near planting sites, substantial numbers moved into other areas, in some instances spawning in streams that were not planted. Apparently, most kokanee matured in their 3rd year of life (2+) and their lengths ranged from 18 to 49 cm.The incidence of lamprey marks on adults was light (1.6% of 4472 examined) but frequencies of marks tended to increase as fish size increased — from 0.5% for 28–32 cm fish to 16.7% for fish over 40 cm long.Successful stream spawning in 1967 was indicated by the retrieval of live eggs and alevins from redds and the capture of downstream migrant fry. Shore spawning was verified by retrieval of viable eggs from redds in 1969. The potential egg deposition in the two rivers with the largest runs in 1967 was approximately 2.7 million eggs. Fish from British Columbia river-spawning stock spawned both in streams and along shores of South Bay. Since spawning was not restricted to streams, the shore areas of Lake Huron may extend the spawning habitat available to kokanee.Adult kokanee fed mainly on insects and plankton during August and September. Aerial forms of insects predominated in South Bay kokanee. Dieldrin and DDT residues were moderate, averaging between 0.012 and 0.046 ppm for dieldrin and 0.226 and 1.242 ppm for DDT in whole tissue samples.Data from South Bay show that the principal species found in association with kokanee were alewife and smelt. The diet of alewife in August indicated possible competition with kokanee.

A confirmed case of bacterial kidney disease in a sports-caught rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) from Loon Lake, British Columbia, is reported. The case represents the first record of this disease in an apparently wild fish in this province. Descriptions of the affected trout and of the causative bacterium are provided.

The salmonids of Pacific North America are a group of closely related species with complex life histories and interesting distribution. Previous studies of their evolution and population structure have involved classical morphological and genetic techniques. We have analysed both intra- and inter-specific variation in mitochondrial DNA sequences of the five North American species of the genus Oncorhynchus and the rainbow trout species, Salmo gairdneri. Cleavage sites for 13 different restriction enzymes were sampled, comparing an average of 48 sites per individual, or approximately 1.7% of the genome. No obvious size variation in the 16 500 ± 500 base pair length was observed. Levels of intraspecific variation detected in the chum salmon and rainbow trout were 0.24 ± 0.23 and 0.45 ± 0.26%, respectively. This variation was population specific; no variation was detected within any of the populations sampled, suggesting the existence of population substructuring. Estimates of divergence between species range from 2.46 ± 0.72% in the coho–chinook salmon comparison to 6.88 ± 1.27% between coho and chum salmon. The phylogenetic relationship among these species, based on the levels of sequence divergence, organizes the species into three distinct groups. One group includes the pink and chum salmon while a second group contains the coho and chinook salmon, as well as the rainbow trout. The sockeye salmon are distinct from both groups. Although most of these results are in accordance with classical analyses, the relationship of the rainbow trout to the coho and chinook salmon suggests different interpretations of the evolution of life histories and morphological traits in these closely related species.
