Morphogenesis of the tarsal tissue and the development of the intromittent palpal organs in the wolf-spider Lycosa chaperi (Simon) (Araneida: Lycosidae)
In the males of Lycosa chaperi the apical epidermal cells of the pedipalpal tarsus develop into the 'palpal organs' during the final three instars of the postembryonic development. The developmental sequence precludes any role of the pretarsal claw in the process, thus discounting an earlier hypothesis that the palpal organ is a hypertrophied claw.
