Natal dispersal and social organization of the swamp antechinus (Antechinus minimus) in a high-density island population

Radiotelemetry, mark–recapture trapping, and microsatellite analysis of genetic variation among three subpopulations were used to investigate the natal dispersal patterns, genetic structure, and social organization within a high-density island population of an insectivorous marsupial, the swamp antechinus ( Antechinus minimus (É. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1803)). Both demographic and genetic data indicated a high degree of philopatry for both sexes. Associated with high philopatry is low gene flow, often leading to high population genetic structuring. However, there was only weak evidence to support this; allele frequencies and genotype composition of one population tended to be different from the other two. Interestingly, timing of breeding of this subpopulation was delayed compared with the other two subpopulations. The philopatry of both sexes and the apparent lack of kin avoidance behaviour could lead to inbreeding. However, no apparent inbreeding effects were observed and offspring survival was high compared with mainland populations. The fact that male home-range size increased during the breeding season, overlapping with several females, and single females were found nesting with different males at the time of mating (and vice versa) indicates a promiscuous mating system. Potentially, this may reduce inbreeding to some extent. Alternatively, inbreeding may not be purposefully avoided, potentially leading to purging of detrimental alleles, thereby reducing their damaging effects on inbreeding.

The use of space by adult woodchucks (Marmota monax) in a field habitat has been studied by radiotracking. Results are analysed according to two periods, each lasting 50 days, preceding and following the onset of natal dispersal; within each period a finer analysis is performed on a 10-day basis. Variations in the use of space within a daily period are also analysed. The number of burrows used, the average distance between burrows successively occupied by the same animal, and home-range size are considered. During the period preceding natal dispersal, adult males are more mobile and have a larger home range than do females accompanied by young. During the period of natal dispersal, the pattern of space use is similar for adults of both sexes, females becoming less sedentary and males reducing their movements. The onset of natal dispersal is a major event affecting the pattern of space use by females accompanied by young. As hibernation approaches, there is a decrease in the amplitude of movements between burrows. Results also suggest that woodchucks are territorial. Comparison with other woodchuck populations reveals differences in social organization that may be related to population densities.

Ideas of Enlightement, national romanticism and transformation of geopolitical situation on the Balkans, were cultural and historical context in which bases of modern Serbian state was established. That was the time of intensive social change directed towards building institutional infrastructure as well as towards transforming traditional, ?obsolete? folk customs and habits. Poor condition of Serbian Orthodox Church and domination of religious world views among people were considered to be the most serious obstacles in creating modern state. Thus, great number of intelectuals were anticlerical and promoted liberal and secularized social organization. On the other hand, the whole epoch was characterized by strong antiscientistic orientation which was expresed through developing of different mistical, alternative, neopagan cults. Specific for our region was so called ?religion of the nation? which appeared as substitution for loss of eshatological perspective in life of Christian civilization. Poets of Serbian romanticism were heralds and witnesses of this civilization ?turn?. Their poetry can be observed as reflex and announcement of secularization in Serbian society. In this paper, we analyzed their writings about death, love, hope, nature and nation.

The theme of nationalism in the works of Premchand, the pre-eminent Urdu–Hindi writer of the 1920s and 1930s, not only serves as an organising principle but also constitutes a protean and contentious field of study, which has resulted in conflicting interpretations. On the one hand, his nationalist narratives are categorically denounced for their apparent lack of radicalism, while on the other hand, they are unequivocally valorised for their so-called subversive content. Both these diametrically opposed schools of criticism, however, share a common lacuna, that is, both of them tend to conflate the writer’s nationalist narratives with his peasant discourse, thereby precluding the possibility of different themes yielding different interpretations. This article examines the theme of nationalism in Premchand’s works, in general, and the question of civil resistance in particular, in order to demonstrate how the writer’s politics of representation in his nationalist writings differs from the one that we find in his peasant narratives. It argues that as opposed to the authorial valorisation of the fictive peasant’s conformity to the exploitative status quo, civil resistance in Premchand’s nationalist narratives is not only necessary and desirable but also synonymous with dharma (moral duty) itself.

Analysis of the late unreformed state of those offices of the Sublime Porte out of which the Ottoman Foreign Ministry was to develop makes clear, as we have shown in an earlier article,1 that the possibilities for reform of the traditional bureaucracy were generally limited by two sets of determinants. One set, readily perceptible at what might be termed a macrohistorical level, consists of those largely exogenous forces which dominated the entire later history of the empire.2 In contrast, the other set derives from the legacy of the old bureaucracy itself. Determinants of this class can be identified only by close examination of that legacy, which in turn had been shaped by the nature of the traditional state, as well as by those patterns of social organization and economic outlook which over the centuries had characterized Ottoman society in general.

ABSTRACT Detrital zircon U-Pb and (U-Th)/He ages from latest Cretaceous–Eocene strata of the Denver Basin provide novel insights into evolving sediment sourcing, recycling, and dispersal patterns during deposition in an intracontinental foreland basin. In total, 2464 U-Pb and 78 (U-Th)/He analyses of detrital zircons from 21 sandstone samples are presented from outcrop and drill core in the proximal and distal portions of the Denver Basin. Upper Cretaceous samples that predate uplift of the southern Front Range during the Laramide orogeny (Pierre Shale, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Laramie Formation) contain prominent Late Cretaceous (84–77 Ma), Jurassic (169–163 Ma), and Proterozoic (1.69–1.68 Ga) U-Pb ages, along with less abundant Paleozoic through Archean zircon grain ages. These grain ages are consistent with sources in the western U.S. Cordillera, including the Mesozoic Cordilleran magmatic arc and Yavapai-Mazatzal basement, with lesser contributions of Grenville and Appalachian zircon recycled from older sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic zircon (U-Th)/He ages confirm Cordilleran sources and/or recycling from the Sevier orogenic hinterland. Five of the 11 samples from syn-Laramide basin fill (latest Cretaceous–Paleocene D1 Sequence) and all five samples from the overlying Eocene D2 Sequence are dominated by 1.1–1.05 Ga zircon ages that are interpreted to reflect local derivation from the ca. 1.1 Ga Pikes Peak batholith. Corresponding late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic zircon (U-Th)/He ages are consistent with local sourcing from the southern Front Range that underwent limited Mesozoic–Cenozoic unroofing. The other six samples from the D1 Sequence yielded detrital zircon U-Pb ages similar to pre-Laramide units, with major U-Pb age peaks at ca. 1.7 and 1.4 Ga but lacking the 1.1 Ga age peak found in the other syn-Laramide samples. One of these samples yielded abundant Mesozoic and Paleozoic (U-Th)/He ages, including prominent Early and Late Cretaceous peaks. We propose that fill of the Denver Basin represents the interplay between locally derived sediment delivered by transverse drainages that emanated from the southern Front Range and a previously unrecognized, possibly extraregional, axial-fluvial system. Transverse alluvial-fluvial fans, preserved in proximal basin fill, record progressive unroofing of southern Front Range basement during D1 and D2 Sequence deposition. Deposits of the upper and lower D1 Sequence across the basin were derived from these fans that emanated from the southern Front Range. However, the finer-grained, middle portion of the D1 Sequence that spans the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary was deposited by both transverse (proximal basin fill) and axial (distal basin fill) fluvial systems that exhibit contrasting provenance signatures. Although both tectonic and climatic controls likely influenced the stratigraphic development of the Denver Basin, the migration of locally derived fans toward and then away from the thrust front suggests that uplift of the southern Front Range may have peaked at approximately the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.

The level of redundancy of ribosomal genes, and the relationship of this level to nucleolar formation at different stages of embryonic development, have been examined in the Mexican axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum. Individuals from 4 inbred stocks were examined, as well as descendants from 2 nucleolar variants which, in the heterozygous condition, are distinguished by exceptionally small nucleoli. Ribosomal RNA-DNA hybridization assays show that one of the 4 wild type lines has only about one-third as much ribosomal DNA (rDNA) as the other three. One of the nucleolar variants has the same level of rDNA as the larger wild-type level; the other variant has the same amount as the smaller ribosomal genome line. Both original nucleolar variants arose as F1 progeny of crosses between a large rDNA genome line and the small genome line. Cytological examination of pregastrula stage embryos from wild type and nucleolar variant lines show that the lengths of the nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) and the sizes of nucleoli formed, are directly correlated with the amount of rDNA present at the nucleolar locus. During gastrulation of the nucleolar variants, however, a transition appears to take place and the amount of rDNA ceases to be the determining factor in nucleolar size. After late gastrula, heterozygous progeny resulting from crosses of either large rDNA genome or small rDNA genome wild type individuals with either nucleolar variant line, have a small and a large nucleolus. The factor or factors associated with this apparent lack of competitive ability of the variant NOR, when opposed to a normal NOR, are unknown. It might be suggested that since the chromosomal alterations which produced the nucleolar variants in both cases eliminated the gene determining the dark colour pattern, they could at the same time have eliminated other genetic material.

This chapter sets the context for the book. We note the purpose of economics should be to describe concepts and models that can be made consistent with sound scientific understanding of the other aspects of life. At a minimum economic behaviour is embedded within the organic system we call the society: it affects extraction, production, utilization, exchange, consumption and disposal of physical entities and services. We consider the main questions about how to contextualize economics. It can be argued that the economy is a mechanism to organize a subset of decisions in a larger highly distributed society. The social organization obeys no simple model of control; its dynamics is often evolutionary at many scales of time, space and material content; and with these it is subject to both historical contingency and great complexity.

This chapter brings readers further into the workplace by examining how coworker dynamics reinforce the extant social organization of higher-end restaurants, and ultimately how workers themselves understand their differences. The author details how educated white servers and working-class Latino cooks enact symbolic boundaries against the other that close off two distinct worlds of work by race, class, and gender. The racialized and classed boundaries that employees enact lead to strained and distant interactions, and can disrupt the flow of service in very real ways. More importantly, symbolic barriers decrease the likelihood that workers themselves feel they are able to access jobs for which they do not fit. This disproportionately affects Latino workers by further miring them in the lowest-paying and least visible jobs in the workplace.

A new concept of packaging platform calls eHDF (embedded high density film), that without any TXVs is been proposed. The eHDF uses the technology from two categories; one utilize the semiconductor fine line technology infrastructure and the other takes the advantage of laminate organic large panel process infrastructure. Hence, the fine line, better electrical performance and low cost requirements can be addressed at the same time by the eHDF packaging platform. In this paper, a test vehicle based on eHDF structure will be built and modules assembly with test chips on eHDF substrate will be performed.
