Brinckmannia hexactinellidophila, n. gen., n. sp.: a hydroid living in tissues of glass sponges of the reefs, fjords, and seamounts of Pacific Canada and Alaska

This paper reports on an intimate association of a cnidarian with glass sponges. Hexactinellid sponges of the genus Heterochone were found to regularly contain numerous tiny hydroids in their tissue. The hydroid belongs to a new genus and species and is here named Brinckmannia hexactinellidophila. Brinckmannia hexactinellidophila is a reduced form, lacking tentacles and gonophores, which certainly is an adaptation to its endobiotic mode of life. The possession of desmonemes allows it to be classified as a member of the suborder Filifera of the order Anthoathecata. The shape of the hydranth reveals some clear affinities with the Proboscidactylidae, a relationship which is also strongly suggested by a comparison of 16S gene sequences. Because a closer relationship to some other families cannot be excluded at this stage, the new genus is nevertheless not assigned to any known family and classified as Filifera incertae sedis.

A new genus and species of janiroidean Asellota, Xenosella coxospinosa, is described from the mid-bathyal slope off the coast of south-eastern Australia. Following a comparison of the new species to several families of broadly similar body shape, with emphasis on monotypic Pleurocopidae, a new family, Xenosellidae, is proposed for the new species. In the course of comparing relevant taxa, the current placements of Prethura Kensley in the Santiidae and Salvatiella Müller in the Munnidae are rejected. The two genera are considered to be incertae sedis within the Asellota superfamily Janiroidea pending further studies.

A new genus and species of basal cyclostome Braconidae is described and figured from a male preserved in mid-Cretaceous amber from northern Myanmar.  <strong><em>Rhetinorhyssalus morticinus</em></strong> Engel, new genus and species, is interesting for its combination of primitive features such as a minute apical costal cell and anal stubs in the forewing, while lacking 2Cu in the hind wing, a putatively derived trait.  As such, the genus may represent a lineage diverging from the braconid stem subsequent to many protorhyssalines, while remaining basal relative to generalized cyclostome groups such as Rhyssalinae.  In addition, the Late Cretaceous <em>Diospilus allani</em> Brues, in Campanian Canadian amber, is transferred to <strong><em>Diorhyssalus</em></strong> Engel, new genus, and its similarity to <em>Rhetinorhyssalus</em> is discussed.  This transfer results in the new combination, <em>Diorhyssalus allani</em> (Brues).  Both genera are tentatively considered as subfamily <em>incertae sedis</em>.

A new genus and species of Lysitermini, Atritermus pedestris Belokobylskij, Zaldivar-Riverón & Quicke, are described from Madagascar. The taxonomic placement of the new genus within Lysiterminae is discussed based on a phylogenetic analysis using 28S rDNA gene sequences. A key to world genera of Lysitermini is provided.Un nuevo género y especie de Lysitermini, Atritermus pedestris Belokobylskij, Zaldivar-Riverón & Quicke, son descritos para Madagascar. La ubicación taxonómica del nuevo género dentro de Lysiterminae es discutida con base en un análisis filogenético usando secuencias del gen ribosomal 28S. Se presenta una clave para los géneros de Lysitermini del mundo.

Hispanosinuites peeli new genus and species from the Lower Oretan shales (Middle Ordovician) of central Spain is described and placed in the new subfamily Hispanosinuitinae of the family Sinuitidae. This new subfamily is considered to represent a highly specialized phylogenetic lineage, which probably separated from the morphological range of the genus Sinuites during the Early Ordovician. The outer shell surface of Hispanosinuites peeli is entirely covered by secondary shell layers, which are interpreted as perinductura, inductura and coinductura. The similarity of these shell deposits in Hispanosinuites peeli and species of Euphemites suggests that these layers were secreted by mantle flaps having the same form in both genera. Hispanosinuites peeli is interpreted as a mobile mollusc with an internal shell adapted to an infaunal mode of life. Discovery of this unusual mollusc reopens the question of the phylogenetic relations of the families Sinuitidae and Euphemitidae, which are often assigned to different molluscan classes.

A new genus and species of thylacinid, Muribacinus gadiyuli, is described from Miocene deposits of Riversleigh in northwestern Queensland. Muribacinus gadiyuli shares six character states associated with carnassialisation common among thylacinids, but is uniformly less derived for each. The closest affinities of this species lie with another plesiomorphic thylacinid from Riversleigh, Nimbacinus dicksoni. Two previously recognised thylacinid synapomorphies are reconsidered in the light of new evidence. A growing body of molecular and fossil data indicates that the modern dasyurid radiation is a relatively recent phenomenon. Character analysis suggests that no reliable dental synapomorphies define the Dasyuridae at present. It is proposed that a number of plesiomorphic late Oligocene and Miocene taxa previously considered as dasyurids be regarded as Dasyuromorphia incertae sedis pending the identification of shared derived dental characters for the family, or the discovery of more complete material.

<em>Kemkemia auditorei</em> Cau &amp; Maganuco, 2009 was recently described as a new genus and species of theropod dinosaur on the basis on an isolated distal caudal vertebra. The holotype and only known specimen comes from Kem Kem beds (Upper Cretaceous) of Morocco. In the present paper we review the phylogenetic position of <em>Kemkemia</em> and we conclude that this taxon belongs to Crocodyliformes. It shares with crocodyliforms the presence of a concavity at the posterolateral margin of neural spines, an inflated neural canal, and reduced prezygapophyses, among other traits. This combination of characters clearly distinguishes <em>Kemkemia</em> from theropod dinosaurs. In this way, <em>Kemkemia</em> is here considered as a Crocodyliformes <em>incertae sedis</em>, and based on the absence of unique characters, the genus and species <em>Kemkemia</em> auditorei is proposed as a nomen <em>dubium</em>.


Pachypleurosaur material from the Middle Triassic ‘ Grenzbitumen’-horizon (Anis-Ladin boundary) of Monte San Giorgio, Kanton Tessin, Switzerland, is described as a new genus and species, Serpianosaurus mirigiolensis .A detailed morphological description is followed by a quantitative analysis. The taxon differs from other pachypleurosaurids primarily by its relatively large skull and its straight lower jaw. Rib pachyostosis is absent. In most characters the taxon remains plesiomorphous with respect to other pachypleurosaurs from the Middle Triassic deposits of Monte San Giorgio, which accords well with its early stratigraphic occurrence at that locality. Sexual dimorphism is expressed by the size and shape of the humerus. A cladistic analysis shows the Pachypleurosauridae to constitute the sistergroup of all other Sauropterygia. The Sauropterygia and the Placodontia together form a monophyletic group, the Euryapsida, which is subordinated to the Diapsida and to the Neodiapsida, but which is classifed outside the archosauromorph-lepidosauromorph dichotomy within the Neodiapsida. A concluding paragraph discusses the status of the pachypleurosaurs within the Sauropterygia. Skull structure, and jaw mechanics in particular, suggest a relatively plesiomorph position of pachypleurosaurs within the Sauropterygia. Their adaptation to an aquatic mode of life was not carried to the degree observed in other sauropterygians, and the ability for rapid and deep dives seems to have been limited by middle-ear structure.

A new genus and species of axiid shrimp, Montanaxius mediumquod gen. et sp. nov., is described and illustrated based on three specimens collected from hexactinellid sponges from a seamount in the southwest Indian Ocean. The new genus is characterized by a laterally denticulate rostrum, short lateral carina, absence of submedian carina, a prominent toothed median carina, round pleomere pleura 2–5, pleurobranchs on second to fourth pereopods, and the presence of a male first pleopod and appendix interna on pleopods 3–5. It most closely resembles Levantocaris Galil & Clark, 1993 and Planaxius Komai & Tachikawa, 2008, but differs from the former by being gonochoristic, having a strongly elevated gastric region and well-developed eyes, and from the latter by its toothed median carina and the presence of a median telson spine.

A variety of Pennsylvanian sponges have been recovered from exposures along the shore of Lake Bridgeport and in nearby areas in Wise County, north-central Texas. Calcareous and hexactinellid sponges have locally weathered out of the Jasper Creek Shale (= upper Lake Bridgeport Shale) and the overlying Devil's Den Limestone of the Graford Formation, of Late Pennsylvanian Missourian age.The Demospongea protomonaxonids Heliospongia excavata King, 1933, and Coelocladia spinosa Girty, 1908 are represented in the studied collections by several specimens, as is the new genus and species Luterospongia texana. Agelasid ceractinomorph demosponges are represented by the fissispongiid Fissispongia jacksboroensis King, 1938, the maeandrostiid Maeandrostia kansasensis Girty, 1908, and the girtycoeliid, Girtycoelia typica King, 1933. Sponges of the Class Hexactinellida and the amphidiscophorid Family Stiodermatidae are represented by an extensive suite of specimens of the new genus and species Dermosphaeroidalis irregularis. Representatives of the hexactinellid reticulosid sponges include some unusually large specimens of the vase-shaped Endoplegma calathus Finks, 1960, of the Family Docodermatidae, and fragmental specimens of ?Stereodictyum orthoplectum Finks, 1960, of the Family Stereodictyidae. One unclassified root tuft fragment is also described and illustrated.Much of this diverse sponge fauna was endemic to the western embayment of Pangaea.
