The influence of chronic experimental diabetes on contractile responses of rat isolated blood vessels

The influence of experimental diabetes induced by streptozotocin on responses of rat isolated aortae and portal veins to noradrenaline, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and KCl was examined 7, 100, 180, and 360 days after the onset of diabetes. No significant changes in reactivity were seen 7 days after the onset of diabetes. After 100 days aortae from diabetic rats were supersensitive (defined as a significant increase in the pD2 value) to noradrenaline. However, 180 days after the onset of diabetes, the sensitivity of diabetic aortae to noradrenaline was not significantly different from control, while the responsiveness (defined as the maximum developed tension ÷ cross-sectional area of aorta) to 5-hydroxytryptamine was reduced. A generalized increase in both the sensitivity and responsiveness of diabetic aortae to all three agonists was observed after 360 days of diabetes. In contrast, no changes in either the sensitivity or the responsiveness of portal veins to noradrenaline, 5-hydroxytryptamine, or KCl could be detected at any time after the onset of diabetes. These results indicate that changes in vascular reactivity can be detected with increasing duration of experimental diabetes. However, these changes do not follow a consistent pattern and are not seen in all parts of the vasculature.

The inability to quantify cerebral blood flow and changes in macrocirculation cross-sectional area in all brain regions impedes robust insight into hypoxic cerebral blood flow control. We applied four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging to quantify cerebral blood flow (ml • min−1) and cross-sectional area (mm2) simultaneously in 11 arteries. In healthy adults, blood pressure, O2 Saturation (SpO2), and end-tidal CO2 were measured at baseline and steady-state hypoxia (FiO2 = 0.11). We investigated left and right: internal carotid, vertebral, middle, anterior, posterior cerebral arteries, and basilar artery. Hypoxia (SpO2 = 80±2%) increased total cerebral blood flow from 621±38 to 742±50 ml • min−1 ( p < 0.05). Hypoxia increased cerebral blood flow, except in the right posterior cerebral arteries. Hypoxia increased cross-sectional area in the anterior arteries (left and right internal carotid arteries, left and right middle, p < 0.05; left and right anterior p = 0.08) but only the right vertebral artery of the posterior circulation. Nonetheless, relative cerebral blood flow distribution and vascular reactivity (Δ%cerebral blood flow • ΔSpO2−1) were not different between arteries. Collectively, moderate hypoxia: (1) increased cerebral blood flow, but relative distribution remains similar to normoxia, (2) evokes similar vascular reactivity between 11 arteries, and (3) increased cross-sectional area primarily in the anterior arteries. This study provides the first wide-ranging, quantitative, functional and structural data regarding intracranial arteries during hypoxia in humans, highlighting cerebral blood flow regulation of microcirculation and macrocirculation differs between anterior and posterior circulation.

The study of the effects on the microvasculature of various vasoactive drugs requires appro-priate methods and equipment for determining the basic physiological parameters of small blood vessels: their internal diameter and cross-sectional area, specific density, and blood flow velocity. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to study the possibilities of improving the reliability of determining the internal diameter and cross-sectional area of the visible blood vessels of bulbar con-junctival of the eye.A technique for obtaining digital video recordings of the bulbar conjunctiva of the eye, based on the pulse illumination of the study area, is proposed. A prototype of the equipment with a spatial resolution of 2 µm video is described, which allows to trace all visible blood vessels, including capillaries. An algorithm for stabilizing the position of a sequence of digital images of the bulbar conjunctiva relative to the first frame is discussed. It is based on the use of subpixel interpolation when searching for a global minimum of the standard deviation of the differences in brightness of the first and selected frame.The proposed algorithms for tracing the vascular pattern and determining the internal diameter and cross-sectional area of the blood vessels are described. An original method for calculating them is proposed, which is based on determining the area and height of a cross section of a blood vessel image. The problem of verification of the obtained results is discussed.The described approach to make it possible to create diagnostic images of the visible blood vessels of the bulbar conjunctiva, including the capillaries, with an indication of their diameters. Examples of the construction of histograms of the distribution of the internal diameter and cross-sectional area of these blood vessels are presented.The proposed technique and hardware solutions have the prospect of being used in creating equipment for complex non-invasive diagnostics of the microvasculature and monitoring the effectiveness of treating various diseases of the cardiovascular system, since the conditions of the eye blood vessels correlate with the state of the blood vessels in other organs.

Tumor-associated macrophages are able to regulate the tumor cell proliferation and to affect the tumor cell dissemination. The study was aimed to assess the predictive potential of the macrophage population immunohistochemical phenotyping in early malignization of H. pylori-associated chronic gastritis. Gastic biopsy samples of male and female patients aged 48 ± 7.2 infected with Helicobacter pylori were used as the research material. The patients were divided into three groups: non-atrophic chronic gastritis (NACG, n = 10), atrophic chronic gastritis (ACG, n = 10), G1/G2 gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC, n = 10). The macrophage population was visualized using the CD68 pan-macrophage marker and the type 2 monocyte/macrophage marker CD163. Intensity of neoangiogenesis was defined using the CD31 endothelial marker by assessing the total cross sectional area of blood vessels. It was found that chronic gastritis was accompanied by the dynamic increase in the size of the general macrophage population with the progression of atrophic and metaplastic processes. According to immunohistochemical study of biopsies obtained from patients with NCG, the CD163 : CD68 ratio was 0.67 ± 0.02, and the total cross sectional area of blood vessels was 3590.92 ± 356.27 µm2. Atrophic gastritis and adenocarcinoma were characterized by vector redistribution of monocytes/macrophages into the 2nd functional phenotype. The CD163 : CD68 expression index in the group with ACG was 0.81 ± 0.04, and in the group with GAC it was 0.88 ± 0.03. Microvascular area was significantly increased in the groups with ACG and GAC, which reflected tumor neoangiogenesis intensification under the influence of М2 monocytes/macrophages. The increased expression of CD163 can serve as a predictor of chronic gastritis malignization together with evaluation of the glandular epithelium atrophy and metaplasia degree.

A significant proportion of the adult population worldwide suffers from cerebral aneurysms. If left untreated, aneurysms may rupture and lead to fatal massive internal bleeding. On the other hand, treatment of aneurysms also involve significant risks. It is desirable, therefore, to have an objective tool that can be used to predict the risk of rupture and assist in surgical decision for operating on the aneurysms. Currently, such decisions are made mostly based on medical expertise of the healthcare team. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using machine learning algorithms to predict rupture risk of vertebral artery fusiform aneurysms based on geometric features of the blood vessels surrounding but excluding the aneurysm. For each of the aneurysm images (12 ruptured and 25 unruptured), the vessel is segmented into distal and proximal parts by cross-sectional area and 382 non-aneurysm-related geometric features extracted. The decision tree model using two of the features (standard deviation of eccentricity of proximal vessel, and diameter at the distal endpoint) achieved 83.8% classification accuracy. Additionally, with support vector machine and logistic regression, we also achieved 83.8% accuracy with another set of two features (ratio of mean curvature between distal and proximal parts, and diameter at the distal endpoint). Combining the aforementioned three features with integration of curvature of proximal vessel and also ratio of mean cross-sectional area between distal and proximal parts, these models achieve an impressive 94.6% accuracy. These results strongly suggest the usefulness of geometric features in predicting the risk of rupture.

SummaryDuring a triple pelvic osteotomy, rotation of the free acetabular segment causes the pubic remnant on the acetabulum to rotate into the pelvic canal. The resulting narrowing may cause complications by impingement on the organs within the pelvic canal. Triple pelvic osteotomies were performed on ten cadaver pelves with pubic remnants equal to 0, 25, and 50% of the hemi-pubic length and angles of acetabular rotation of 20, 30, and 40 degrees. All combinations of pubic remnant lengths and angles of acetabular rotation caused a significant reduction in pelvic canal-width and cross-sectional area, when compared to the inact pelvis. Zero, 25, and 50% pubic remnants result in 15, 35, and 50% reductions in pelvic canal width respectively. Overrotation of the acetabulum should be avoided and the pubic remnant on the acetabular segment should be minimized to reduce postoperative complications due to pelvic canal narrowing.When performing triple pelvic osteotomies, the length of the pubic remnant on the acetabular segment and the angle of acetabular rotation both significantly narrow the pelvic canal. To reduce post-operative complications, due to narrowing of the pelvic canal, overrotation of the acetabulum should be avoided and the length of the pubic remnant should be minimized.

The paper presents solutions to the direct and inverse problems on longitudinal vibrations of a rod with a variable cross-sectional area. The law of variation of the cross-sectional area is modeled as an exponential function of a polynomial of degree n . The method for reconstructing this function is based on representing the fundamental system of solutions of the direct problem in the form of a Maclaurin series in the variables x and λ. Examples of solutions for various section functions and various boundary conditions are given. It is shown that to recover n unknown coefficients of a polynomial, n eigenvalues are required, and the solution is dual. An unambiguous solution was obtained only for the case of elastic fixation at one of the rod’s ends. The numerical estimation of the method error was made using input data noise. It is shown that the error in finding the variable crosssectional area is less than 1% with the error in the eigenvalues of longitudinal vibrations not exceeding 0.0001.

The study analyzed the functional parameters of nasal breathing, linear parameters of the nasal aperture, nasal cavity and nasopharynx, volumetric parameters of the upper airways in patients with II and III skeletal class of jaw anomalies before and after orthognathic surgery. The respiratory function of the nose was assessed using a rhinomanometric complex. According to rhinoresistometry data, nasal resistance and hydraulic diameter were assessed. According to the data of acoustic rhinometry, the minimum cross-sectional area along the internal valve, the minimum cross-sectional area on the head of the inferior turbinate and nasal septum and related parameters were estimated. According to the CBCT data, the state of the nasal septum, the inferior turbinates, the nasal aperture, the state of the nasal cavity, and the linear values of the upper respiratory tract (nasopharynx) were analyzed.
