Canopy mortality and stand-scale change in a northern hemlock–hardwood forest

Ring-width patterns from 348 trees on a 5.25-ha mapped plot in the Sylvania Wilderness, Upper Michigan, were used to infer the pattern of canopy mortality for the past 140 years. Estimates of average canopy turnover rate (0.54%/year) and average canopy residence time (186 years) are similar to other estimates for the region. The temporal pattern of release events detected in the cores is closely related to the occurrence of extreme drought with sugar maple (Acersaccharum Marsh.) trees showing increased growth in the years directly following drought and eastern hemlock (Tsugacanadensis (L.) Carr.) trees showing increased growth 3–4 years following drought. Drought seems to be synchronizing canopy recruitment by influencing the temporal pattern of canopy mortality. In particular, 22% of all sampled stems show a response to canopy turnover during the 1930s and a large portion of the recruitment consisted of sugar maple stems originating in gaps. Individuals of this sugar maple cohort are clustered up to 30–40 m. Along the border between the hemlock and hardwood stands, remnant hemlock logs are present beneath these sugar maple clusters suggesting that canopy replacement of hemlock by sugar maple has occurred. Diameter distributions of stems indicate that sugar maple is regenerating in hardwood stands and in areas of mixed species composition. In contrast, smaller size classes of hemlock are conspicuously absent from areas of mixed species composition and are restricted to the hemlock stand. In this hemlock–hardwood forest mosaic, sugar maple has been slowly increasing in abundance at the expense of hemlock, gradually increasing the extent of the hardwood patch.

A thinning study in 50- to 55-year-old, even-aged, mixed species Allegheny hardwoods produced highly variable merchantable stemwood volume increment responses. Regression equations relating parameters of stand growth (ingrowth, mortality, survivor growth, net growth, and gross growth) to relative stand density had R2 values ranging from 0.07 to 0.48. When study plots with similar pretreatment species composition were assigned to four groups using cluster analysis, R2 values were increased to 0.94–0.99. There were significant differences in the relationships between relative stand density and growth response variables among all plot groups. At all densities, plots with a high percentage of black cherry (Prunusserotina Ehrh.) had the highest volume increment. Plots with a high percentage of black cherry and a low percentage of sugar maple (Acersaccharum Marsh.) showed a decrease in volume increment, relatively high ingrowth, and relatively low mortality with a decrease in relative stand density. Plots with a high percentage of sugar maple and low percentage of black cherry showed an increase in volume increment, relatively low ingrowth, and relatively high mortality with decreases in relative stand density. Guidelines for thinning Allegheny hardwoods recommend a residual relative stand density of 60%. These guidelines may need to be revised to incorporate considerations of species composition. Stands of pole-size to small sawtimber-size trees dominated by black cherry may require a residual density higher than 60% to maximize the volume increment of merchantable stemwood. The volume increment in similarly structured stands dominated by sugar maple might be maximized at densities lower than 60%.

AbstractWe studied the effects of forest height and forest gap on assemblages of flying beetles in an American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. (Fagaceae) – sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh. (Aceraceae)) forest in Quebec. From June until August of 2005, beetles were collected in Lindgren funnel traps placed in the canopy (20–25 m height) and upper understorey (3–5 m height) in proximity to five forest gaps (15–30 m in diameter) (at the edge of the forest opening or within the closed-canopy forest). We collected 1852 beetles representing 38 families and 172 species. Based on rarefaction curves, species richness was significantly higher in the canopy than in the upper understorey. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination revealed a change in species composition in relation to vertical stratification but not to the forest gaps. Our findings confirmed the importance of the vertical forest gradient to overall diversity of forest coleopterans.

Abstract Key message Long Bosnian pine chronologies from different mountains are shaped by different climatic parameters and can help identify past drought events and reconstruct landscape histories. Abstract We developed a 735-year-long Pinus heldreichii chronology from the southern distribution limit of the species, expanding the available database of long Bosnian pine chronologies. Tree-ring growth was mainly positively correlated with growing degree days (GDD: r1950–2018 = 0.476) while higher temperatures during both winter and growing season also enhanced growth (TWT: r1950–2018 = 0.361 and TGS: 0.289, respectively). Annual precipitation, during both calendar and water years, had a negative but weaker impact on annual tree growth. The newly developed chronology correlates well with chronologies developed from the neighboring mountains. The years with ring width index (RWI) lower than the average were found to correspond to cool years with dry summers. Still, the newly developed chronology was able to capture severe drought events, such as those in 1660, 1687, and 1725. Several old living trees had internal scars presumably caused by fires. Therefore, old mature trees could be used for fire history reconstruction in addition to climate reconstruction. Although the presence of lightning scars indicates an important natural agent of fire ignition, human activities associated with animal grazing could also be an underlying reason for fires in the region.

Abstract Discarding of commercially important fish species in the bottom trawl fisheries in the northern Mediterranean Sea was investigated by soliciting the long-term recollections of fishers engaged or formerly engaged in such fisheries. The main aim of our investigation was to describe the prevalence of discarding and its evolution over the past 70 years using information gathered through individual questionnaire-based interviews with fishers from ports in Spain, Italy, and Greece, following a standardized sampling protocol. Although it proved impossible to derive absolute estimates of the volume of discarded catches over the period investigated, we conclude that over the past 70 years, discarding as a practice has gradually increased in the northern Mediterranean trawl fisheries and has been accompanied by a shift in the species composition of the discarded catch. While discarding can occur for a number of reasons, our investigations indicate that discarding in the past was mostly driven by market demand, but recent legal and regulatory constraints have led to changes in fishing strategies and became a significant reason for discards.

AbstractHuman alteration of watercourses is global phenomenon that has had significant impacts on local ecosystems and the services they provide. Monitoring of abiotic and biotic changes is essential to mitigating long-lasting effects, and the 23-year dataset from the Gabčíkovo Waterworks provided a rare opportunity to assess the impact of groundwater regimes on vegetation. The main aim of this study was to describe the effect of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks on vegetation structure and species composition of the adjacent riparian floodplain forests over the past 23 years. The results are based on studies of three permanent monitoring plots (PMPs) located in the Danube inland delta – two outside (PMP 1 and 3) and one (PMP 2) fully under the influence of the artificial supply system. Our results demonstrate that the Danube inland delta was negatively affected by the Gabčíkovo construction, particularly for sites outside of the artificial supply system. There was a significant decrease in soil moisture and increase in nitrogen at both external PMPs (1 and 3). Alter soil conditions were accompanied by negative changes in plant species composition demonstrated by decreases in the number of typical floodplain forest species that are characteristic for the alliance
