Decomposition of woody debris in Western Australian forests

Changes in mass and nutrients in experimental logs of six tree species during 5 years of exposure in the three major forest production regions of southwest Western Australia were measured to determine how climate, substrate quality, and substrate size interact to regulate decomposition of woody debris in this Mediterranean-type climate. Branch (3–5 cm in diameter) and bole (10–15 cm in diameter) material of the six species was set out in representative areas of a regenerating clear-cut Eucalyptusdiversicolor F. Muell. wet sclerophyll forest, selectively cut Eucalyptusmarginata Donn ex Smith dry sclerophyll forest, and clear-cut areas of a former Pinuspinaster Aiton plantation. Experimental logs were collected at about 0.5, 2, and 5 years after placement and were separated into bark and wood components. Samples of initial material were analyzed for moisture content, water-soluble and NaOH-soluble extractives, and nutrient concentrations (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg). At each collection, moisture content and changes in mass and nutrient concentration were determined for the sample logs. Eucalyptuscalophylla R.Br, the major associate of the two native forests, lost the most mass during this time, up to 65% of the initial mass (decomposition coefficient k = 0.22 year−1). Decomposition was least in P. pinaster and E. marginata, at about 24–26% of original mass (k = 0.05 year−1 and 0.07 year−1, respectively). Mass losses were greatest in Manjimup, the wettest site, and least at Gnangara, the driest site, but differences in overall levels of decomposition were small despite the range in climatic moisture regimes. Small logs decomposed faster than large logs. Changes in nutrient concentrations occurred in all logs at all sites, indicating activity by decomposer organisms and (or) leaching losses. Nitrogen was the only element to be immobilized over the 5-year period. Mineralization rates were of the order P ≈ Ca < Mg < K. Concentrations of compounds extractable in cold water and NaOH decreased during the 5 years of exposure. Differences in decomposition rates were partly explained by initial concentrations of N only; there appeared to be no relationship between decomposition and concentration of the other elements and extractives.

OBJECTIVE: the present work proposed to extract Locust Bean Gum (LBG) from Algerian carob fruits, evaluate physicochemical and rheological properties (solubility). It aimed also to develop different formulations of strawberry jams with a mixture of LBG and pectin in order to obtain a product with a high sensory acceptance. METHODS: the physicochemical characteristics of LBG were assessed. The impact of temperature on solubility was also studied. The physical and the sensory profile and acceptance of five Jams were evaluated. RESULTS: composition results revealed that LBG presented a high level of carbohydrate but low concentrations of fat and ash. The LBG was partially cold-water-soluble (∼62% at 25°C) and needed heating to reach a higher solubility value (∼89% at 80 °C). Overall, the sensorial acceptances decreased in jams J3 which was formulated with 100% pectin and commercial one (J5). The external preference map explained that most consumers were located to the right side of the map providing evidence that most samples appreciated were J4 and J2 (rate of 80–100%). CONCLUSION: In this investigation, the LBG was used successfully in the strawberry jam’s formulation.

Ginkgo seeds were selected and used as experimental material to study protein compositions in ginkgo protein. Ginkgo protein was used as accessory to be added into flour to make bread. Effect of ginkgo protein on moisture content and hardness of bread were investigated. Experimental results showed that ginkgo protein contained water-soluble protein and salt-soluble protein which was 85.28 percents in total protein and contained small amounts of prolamin and alkali-soluble protein. The bread added with different ratios of ginkgo protein had higher moisture content and lower hardness. Therefore, adding appropriate amount of ginkgo protein could improve bread baking performances and bread shelf life.

The number and size of checks, wood moisture content, extent of blue-stain, rot and decay was examined by stem analysis in 360 mature standing beetle-killed lodgepole pines. Trees came from three areas (Burns Lake, Quesnel, and Vanderhoof) in Central British Columbia. Each area was represented by 14 to 16 sampling areas (stands) distributed evenly across three soil moisture regimes (dry, mesic, wet). Year of death was estimated from tree ring-analysis, local knowledge and insect and disease survey maps. An approximately equal number of trees had been dead for one or two years, three or four years, or for five or more years. During the first five years since death by beetle attack the number of checks per tree increased from 2.5 to 10.2 and the average depth of checks increased from 4.3 cm to 5.1 cm. Checks were deeper, wider, and longer on the drier sites than on mesic and wet sites. Moisture content of sapwood and heartwood was near the fibre saturation point (ca 30%) one year after death and continued to decrease at a rate of approximately 1.7% per year. Both the incidence and the extent (relative to basal area) of rot and decay increased significantly with time since death. All trees had an extensive blue-stain discoloration. Deterioration of wood quality was fastest during the first two years after a beetle attack. Key words: wood checks, moisture content, blue-stain, wood quality, spiral grain, bark beetle

The 3M Company has developed a sample-ready system (Petrifilm ™ SM) for enumerating bacteria in milk and other food products. The testing unit consists of Standard Methods culture medium coated onto a base film and overlaid with a second film coated with a cold-water-soluble gelling agent and tetrazolium indicator dye. As such, the system is ready to accept samples of product. A pipette or 0.001-ml plate loop continuous pipetting syringe can be used for applying samples. In this study, both methods of sample addition were used and results compared with those of the Standard Plate Count (SPC) and standard Plate Loop (PL) methods for determining bacteria numbers in raw milk. In total, 108 samples were analyzed in duplicate by each of the four methods. The correlation coefficients (r) between the 3M-SPC and SPC, 3M-PL and PL, 3M-PL and SPC and PL and SPC were 0.946, 0.935, 0.941, and 0.974, respectively. Repeatability, as measured by mean log10 variance for duplicate determinations, was essentially the same for the four methods, and in all instances less than 0.005. The mean log10 differences between the SPC and 3M-SPC, and SPC and 3M-PL were, respectively, −0.177 and −0.168. The preceding statistical criteria suggest the Petrifilm™ SM method to be a suitable alternative to the SPC or the PL procedure.

The presence of Pericopsis mooniana (Thw.) Thw. in nature is endangered. Meanwhile, Pericopsis mooniana plants have its obstacles in generative propagation because the seeds have mechanical dormancy. Studies carried out to: (1) observe the morphology of pods, seeds and sprouts of Pericopsis mooniana; (2) determine the physical quality of Pericopsis mooniana seeds, and (3) analyze the proper dormancy breaking treatment for Pericopsis mooniana seeds. Research is conducted in laboratories and in greenhouses. The physical quality of the seeds measured was the weight of 1,000 seeds and the moisture content. The treatment for breaking the dormancy of the Pericopsis mooniana seeds were control, scarification of the seeds using nail clippers and soaking in hot to cold water for 48 hours. Morphologically, the fruit of Pericopsis mooniana is pod-shaped, with orange seeds, oval-shaped and curved edges. Pericopsis mooniana sprouts include in the epigeal type. In 1 kg of weight there are ± 4,000 Pericopsis mooniana seeds, with the post harvest seed moisture content amounting to 7.62%. The dormancy breaking treatment of Pericopsis mooniana seeds increased seeds germination by 60% compared to controls. The scarification of Pericopsis mooniana seeds using nail clippers for breaking mechanical dormancy is the best treatment because it can increase the number of seeds germinating in a short time and simultaneously. Mango peel (Mangfera indica L.) has many pharmacological effects as a traditional medicine. Therefore, standardization of mango peel simplisia needs to be done as a preparation of phytopharmaca raw material. This research aimed to obtain standardization of mango peel simplisia include specific and non-specific parameter. The research procedures include plant determination, simplisia preparation as well as specific standardization test (includes organoleptic, water-soluble compound concentration, and ethanol solution compound concentration) and nonspecific standardization test (includes moisture content, dried shrinkage, total ash content and acid insoluble ash content). The specific organoleptic parameters of dried mango peel simplisia have a distinctive sweet aroma, bitter taste, and brownish yellow colour. Water-soluble and ethanol-soluble concentrations are 22,36% ± 1,17% and 9,56% ± 0,07%. Moisture content is 9,09% ± 1,44%. Dried shrinkage rate is 0,19% ± 0,04%. Total ash and acid insoluble ash contents are 4,11% ± 0,10% and 0,14% ± 0,03%. The mango peel simplisia has met the quality standard of the raw material.

Oyster mushrooms are an interesting source of biologically active glucans and other polysaccharides. This work is devoted to the isolation and structural characterization of polysaccharides from basidiocarps of the cultivated oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. Five polysaccharidic fractions were obtained by subsequent extraction with cold water, hot water and two subsequent extractions with 1 m sodium hydroxide. Branched partially methoxylated mannogalactan and slightly branched (1→6)-β-d-glucan predominated in cold- and hot-water-soluble fractions, respectively. Alternatively, these polysaccharides were obtained by only hot water extraction and subsequent two-stage chromatographic separation. The alkali-soluble parts originating from the first alkali extraction were then fractionated by dissolution in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The polysaccharide insoluble in DMSO was identified as linear (1→3)-α-d-glucan, while branched (1→3)(1→6)-β-d-glucans were found to be soluble in DMSO. The second alkaline extract contained the mentioned branched β-d-glucan together with some proteins. Finally, the alkali insoluble part was a cell wall complex of chitin and β-d-glucans.
