Preliminary survey of clonal variation in rooting of Allanblackia floribunda leafy stem cuttings

Clonal and cutting stem morphology variations in rooting ability were simultaneously examined in Allanblackia floribunda Oliv. using leafy stem cuttings in two experiments. The hypothesis tested is that clonal variation in rooting percentage is due to variation in cutting morphology. Each of the four replicate blocks used per experiment consisted of 18 treatments from two crossed factors, diameter or length × clone, making a total of n = 216 cuttings (3 cutting lengths (3, 4, and 5 cm) or diameters (2, 3, and 4 mm) × 6 stumps (clones) × 12 cuttings, as each experimental unit consisted of 12 cuttings). The cuttings were used for rooting in nonmist propagators. No clone × cutting diameter and clone × cutting length interactions (P = 0.293 and 0.513, respectively) on rooting percentage were found at the end of the study. Highly significant and significant clonal variations in rooting percentage were noted throughout the experiments. Results from this study reject the hypothesis being tested. Finally, further work should be done on the effects of physiological status of the cuttings and clonal variation in this species.

ABSTRACT: Drimys brasiliensis Miers is an Angiosperm native to the Atlantic Rainforest, commonly known as cataia. Because of dormancy of its seeds, due to embryonic immaturity, production of cataia seedlings presents challenges regarding propagation of the species. Thus, cuttings emerged as a possible technique to be applied, diminishing plants production time and ensuring uniformity of rooting. Stem cuttings from current year shoots were collected in autumn/2012, prepared with 10-12cm in length, a bevel cut on base and straight on top, keeping two leaves, one leaf or no leaves in the apical portion. After disinfestation, bases of cuttings were submitted to the following treatments with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) in 50% hydro-alcoholic solution: 100% water, 0, 500, 1500, 3000, 4500 and 6000mg L-1 IBA. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with 3 types of cutting x 7 IBA concentrations, with four replicates of 10 cuttings per experimental unit. After 120 days, the variables percentage of rooted cuttings, number of roots per cutting, length of the three longest roots per cutting, percentage of cuttings with callus, alive and dead, with new shoots and the cuttings maintaining the original leaves were assessed. The application of IBA had no influence on any of the assessed variables. Cuttings with two leaves presented the best rooting percentage (51.1%) and the lowest mortality (5.4%), when compared to cuttings with one leaf (35.0%) or without leaves (0.4%). Cuttings without leaves are to be avoided, since they present the highest mortality percentage (93.6%).

<p>ABSTRACT</p><p>Pohpohan (Pilea trinervia Wight.) is one of indigenous vegetables that grows in the mountain areas of West Java. Propagule availability in large quantities and in a short time can be done with cuttings. However, propagation of Pohpohan by cutting  has  not  been  developed  presently.  The objective  of  the research was  to  obtain  the  best  plant  age,  stem  part,  and growing media  for the growth  of  pohpohan  stem  cuttings.  The  research  was conducted  at the Center  of  Tropical Horticulture Studies Experimental Field Tajur-Bogor, from January to July 2013. The cuttings were taken  from  mother plants  of  3,  4, 5,  and  6  months,  then the  cuttings  were  cut  to  stem tips  (B1), central stem  (B2),  and  stem  base  (B3).  The  were  five  cuttings  per experimental  unit. Experiment were replicated 3 times. Cuttings  were planted in polybag containing topsoil media (M0), rockwool (M1), husk  and  compost (M2),  and  vermicompost  (M3).  The  experiment  was  arranged in Randomized Completely Block Design.  Result of experiment  showed that pohpohan from 4 monthmother plant cut  at  stem  base  grow  in husk and compost  grow  best  (99.06% of living percentages, 100% percentage of rooted cutting  and 11-12 number of leaves).  The cutting of stem tips grown  in husk and compost showed the highest mean for the increase of stem length, 3.94 cm. There were no interaction between growing media of stem cuttings and part of stem in the growth of shoot height, number of branch, leaf width, and diameter of stem. Key words: growing media, indigenous, pohpohan, stem cuttings ABSTRAKPohpohan  (Pilea  trinervia  Wight.)  merupakan salah  satu sayuran  indigenous  yang  banyak tumbuh  di  daerah  pegunungan Jawa Barat. Pemenuhan  kebutuhan  bibit  pohpohan  dalam  jumlah yang  banyak dan dalam  waktu  yang  singkat  dapat  dilakukan  dengan  perbanyakan vegetatif stek. Namun  demikian  perbanyakan  stek  pada  pohpohan  belum  banyak dikembangkan  untuk  saat  ini. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah  memperoleh umur bahan tanaman, bagian batang, dan media tanam yang terbaik  untuk pertumbuhan  stek  batang  pohpohan.  Penelitian  dilaksanakan  di  Kebun Percobaan Pusat Kajian Hortikultura Tropika (PKHT) Tajur-Bogor, dari Januari sampai Juli 2013. Pohpohan yang digunakan yaitu berumur 3, 4, 5, dan 6 bulan, kemudian dilakukan stek batang pada bagian pucuk (B1), tengah (B2), dan pangkal (B3).  Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan ialah rancangan kelompok lengkap teracak.  Setiap satuan percobaan  terdiri  atas lima  stek,  percobaan terdiri atas tiga ulangan.  Stek  dimasukkan  ke  dalam  polibag  dengan  media tanam  topsoil  (M0),  rockwool  (M1), arang  sekam  dan  kompos  (M2), serta kascing  (M3).  Hasil  penelitian  menunjukkan  bahwa  stek pohpohan yang berasal dari tanaman 4 bulan,  bagian pangkal batang dan ditanam pada media arang sekam dan kompos memiliki pertumbuhan yang terbaik dengan rata-rata persentase hidup 99.06%, persentase berakar 100%, dan jumlah daun 11-12 helai. Stek pada pucuk batang yang ditanam pada media arang sekam dan kompos memiliki penambahan panjang batang stek 3.94 cm. Tidak terdapat interaksi antara perlakuan stek pada media tanam dengan bagian batang terhadap perumbuhan tinggi tunas, jumlah cabang, lebar daun, dan diameter batang.</p><p>Kata kunci: indigenous, media tanam, pohpohan, stek batang</p>

Khaya senegalensisis a multipurpose African timber species. The development of clonal propagation could improve plantation establishment, which is currently impeded by mahogany shoot borer. To examine its potential for clonal propagation, the effects of cutting length, leaf area, stockplant maturation, auxin, and smoke solution treatments were investigated. Leafy cuttings rooted well (up to 80%) compared to leafless cuttings (0%). Cuttings taken from seedlings rooted well (at least 95%), but cuttings obtained from older trees rooted poorly (5% maximum). The rooting ability of cuttings collected from older trees was improved (16% maximum) by pollarding. Auxin application enhanced root length and the number of roots while smoke solution did not improve cuttings' rooting ability. These results indicate that juvenileK. senegalensisis amenable to clonal propagation, but further work is required to improve the rooting of cuttings from mature trees.

The rooting ability of GF677 peach rootstock by hardwood (H), semihardwood (SH), and softwood (S) stem cuttings collected January, February, May, and November, treated with various IBA concentrations—0, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 ppm—was studied. H cuttings collected in January and treated with 2000 ppm IBA caused significant increase in rooting (62%–5%). In addition, the SH cuttings prepared February and treated with 1000 or 2000 ppm IBA gave 42.5%. The May experiment resulted in low rooting percentage where H cuttings treated with 500 ppm IBA gave 10% rooting. In October, SH cuttings with 1000 or 3000 ppm IBA gave the highest rooting percentage (60%), while in November 90% rooting was obtained in H cuttings treated with 3000 ppm. Regardless of type of cutting, IBA at 1000, 2000, or 3000 ppm was better for rooting the GF677 than at 500 ppm. However, irrespective of IBA concentration, H and SH cuttings gave significantly high rooting percentages. On the other hand, best rooting was obtained when the stem cuttings of GF677 (regardless of wood type) were collected in November. Wounding base of the cutting of GF677 improved rooting ability.

Abstract P. nigra (black poplar) is a fast-growing tree utilized for afforestation and as an ornamental in all the temperate areas of the world. It is also utilized in breeding programmes as a parent, because it is compatible with many other Populus species. It is adaptable to many environments and different soil types, exhibits excellent rooting ability of stem cuttings and good resistance to pathogens.

Stem cuttings of two lingonberry varieties, Koralle and Erntekrone, collected and planted in April, May, June and August, were tested for rooting and shoot growth in the presence of Trichoderma viride strain T-6-RC. Strain T-6-RC had a significant effect on increasing the rooting potential of the cuttings regardless of variety or collection date. However, this effect was more evident for Erntekrone, which generally had a poorer rooting ability than Koralle. Significant interactions between collection date, T-6-RC and variety were found for shoot growth and are discussed in the text. Key words: Lingonberry, fungi, propagation, soil micromycetes
