Dehydroacetic acid Schiff bases DAE (1) and DATS (2) were isolated from the reaction of dehydroacetic acid (2-acetyl-5-hydroxy-3-oxo-4-hexenoic acid-δ-lactone) with hydrazine-S-methylcarbodithioate and the corresponding acid amide, thiosemicarbazide, respectively. Reaction of such Schiff bases with nickel(II) and palladium(II) ions afforded the dimeric monoligand chelates [M(DAE-2H)]2 and [M(DATS-2H)]2; M = Ni(II) or Pd(II). In the presence of monodentate Lewis bases, B, square-planar chelates [M(DAE-2H)B] and [M(DATS-2H)B], in which B = pyridine or triphenylphosphine, were isolated. The stoichiometry and structure of the isolated organic ligands and their chelates were confirmed through elemental analyses, molecular weight determination, and infrared, ultraviolet–visible, and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

New polystyrene supported mixed Schiff bases(PSCH 2 –LH 2 ) and their coordination compounds with nickel(II), dioxomolybdenum(VI), and dioxouranium(VI) have been synthesized. PSCH 2 –LH 2 have been synthesized by the reaction of chloromethylated polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene(PSCH 2 –Cl) and the Schiff bases(LH 2 ) derived from 3-formylsalicylic acid, ethylenediamine or propylene diamine, and acetylacetone. The polystyrene-supported coordination compounds are of the types: PSCH 2 –LM(where M = Ni, MoO 2, UO 2 ). They have been synthesized by the reaction of PSCH 2 –LH 2 and the metal salt/metal coordination compounds in DMF. The coordination compounds have been characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, reflectance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The shifts of the ν (C=N)(azomethine), ν (C–O)(phenolic) and ν (C–O)(enolic) stretches indicate the ONNO donor behavior of PSCH 2 –LH 2. The polystyrene-supported Ni(II) compound is square planar; MoO2 (VI) and UO2 (VI) compounds are octahedral and Zr(IV) compounds are pentagonal bipyramidal. The compounds, PSCH 2 –LM(where M = Ni, MoO 2, and UO 2 ) are diamagnetic.

Reactions of 1,10-phenanthroline with halogen bridged dinuclear species, [M2X2(PPh2O)2(PPh2OH)2] and [M2X2(PR3)4][BF4]2, give the new five co-ordinate complexes, [MX(PPh2O)(PPh2OH)(Phen)] and [MX(PR3)2(Phen)][BF4], where M = Pd or Pt, X = Cl or Br, Ph = phenyl, and R = ethyl (or phenyl when M = Pd). Decomposition of the [MX(PR3)2(Phen)][BF4] complexes in hot solvents gives the four co-ordinate species, [MX(PR3)(Phen)][BF4]. The complexes are characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weight, and conductance measurements and infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The spectroscopic data show that [PtCl(PEt3)2(Phen)][BF4] has a trigonal bipyramidal structure with the phenanthroline and one triethylphosphine in the equatorial plane and a chlorine and a triethylphosphine in the axial positions.

A series of new organotin(IV) compounds [Me2SnL], [Et2SnL], [Bu2SnL] and [Ph2SnL], where L = 2-hydroxy-N-(1-(4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-oxo-2H-pyran-3-yl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide has been synthesized by refluxing methyl salicylate hydrazide hydrate with dehydroacetic acid (DHA) with the corresponding organotin(IV) chlorides. All the compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 119Sn NMR and mass spectrometry. The synthesized complexes found to have wide therapeutic potential.

The reaction of palladium(II) acetate with acyclic amino acids in acetone/water yields square planar bis-chelated palladium amino acid complexes that exhibit interesting non-covalent interactions. In all cases, complexes were examined by multiple spectroscopic techniques, especially HRMS (high resolution mass spectrometry), IR (infrared spectroscopy), and 1H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy. In some cases, suitable crystals for single crystal X-ray diffraction were able to be grown and the molecular structure was obtained. The molecular geometries of the products are discussed. Except for the alanine complex, all complexes incorporate water molecules into the extended lattice and exhibit N-H···O and/or O···(HOH)···O hydrogen bonding interactions. The non-covalent interactions are discussed in terms of the extended lattice structures exhibited by the structures.

In this study water-soluble polyurethane (WSPU) was synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and polyethylene glycol (PEG), 2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid or dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), butane-1,4-diol (BD), and triethylamine (TEA) using an acetone process. The water solubility was investigated by solubilizing the polymer in water and measuring the contact angle and the results indicated that water solubility and contact angle tendency were increased as the molecular weight of the soft segment decreased, the amount of emulsifier was increased, and soft segment to hard segment ratio was lower. The contact angle of samples without emulsifier was greater than 87°, while that of with emulsifier was less than 67°, indicating a shift from highly hydrophobic to hydrophilic. The WSPU was also analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to identify the absorption of functional groups and further checked by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The molecular weight of WSPU was measured using size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). The structure of the WSPU was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The thermal properties of WSPU were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

In this investigation, Schiff bases aluminum complex was synthesized and used as the initiator in the polymerization of D,L-lactide. The aluminum complex was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The influences of different factors, including reaction time, reaction temperature, and the ratio of D, L-lactide/Al3+ on the synthesis of polylactide were described. The results showed that Schiff bases aluminum complex could be successfully applied in the ring opening polymerization. The optimum condition of the ring opening polymerization of D,L-lactide, which included D,L-lactide/Al3+ (mol/mol) ratio of 250, reaction temperature of 120 °C, and reaction time of 16 hours.
