Vibrational assignments are proposed for solid NaNH2SO3 on the basis of room temperature polarized Raman spectra of single crystals. Infrared data for the region 4000–50 cm−1 of the polycrystalline sample are also presented. The results indicate that (1) there is no water of crystallization, (2) the hydrogen bonding is extremely weak, and (3) the strength of N—S bond is stronger than in sulphamic acid.

The polarized Raman spectra of single-crystal 6LiRbSO4 and 7LiRbSO4 at room temperature are reported. On the basis of these data, symmetry-based band assignments are given for both internal and external optic modes. The translational optic modes of the lithium ion appear in the region between 444 and 364 cm−1. Vibrational coupling interactions are noted between the sulfate ion ν2 and the lithium translational optic modes in the same irreducible representation. Coupling interactions are negligible or small in 7LiRbSO4, while in 6LiRbSO4 the lithium isotope effect shifts the lithium translational modes into more coupling interaction with the sulfate ion ν2 modes.

Langasite (La3Ga5SiO14: denoted by LGS) single crystal is one of the lead free piezoelectric materials with high piezoelectricity that is maintained up to its melting point (1470°C). Although LGS single crystals have usually been grown by Czochralski (CZ) method in oxygen contained atmosphere to prevent evaporation of Ga, they were grown by the vertical Bridgman (VB) method in Ar atmosphere without oxygen, and their properties were evaluated in this work. Transparent and colorless LGS single crystals were successfully obtained without Ga evaporation by the VB method in Ar atmosphere, and their resistivity at room temperature was much higher than that grown by conventional CZ method. Piezoelectric constant d11 of the crystal grown by the VB method was 6 x 10-12 C/N, which was close to that of the crystal grown by CZ method. The colorless transparent LGS single crystal turned to orange and its resistivity decreased by annealing in air. Since an orange-colored transparent LGS single crystal has been grown by conventional CZ method, this indicates that color change and the resistivity decrease of LGS crystal is caused by extra interstitial oxygen atoms in the crystal.

ABSTRACT(Ybx Y1-x)2O3 (x = 0.0, 0.005, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.15) promising single crystal laser rods of 4.2 mm in diameter and 15–20 mm in length have been grown from the rhenium crucible by the micro-pulling-down method in Ar + H2(3–4%) atmosphere. Linear decrease of lattice constant with the increase of Yb3+-content was observed. High homogeneity of the Yb3+-dopant distribution has been demonstrated. Absorption, emission and Raman spectra have been recorded and decay time was approximated.

Abstract Some new mixed valence compounds of the type [M(L-L)2M(L-L)2X2]Y4 (where M = Pt or Pd, L-L = 2NH3 or ethylenediamine, X = Cl, Br or I and Y = HSO4, 1/2 SO4, ClO4 or 1/2 PtCl4) have been synthesized. The polarized Raman spectra of single crystals show the anisotropic character and the presence of ---M(II)---X-M(IV)-X chains. The method of preparation and the chemical behaviour correspond to the mechanism of the formation of Magnus green salt oxidized product.

Raman spectra of oriented single crystals of KNO3(II) have been recorded at 298 and 77 K. At both temperatures the data are in excellent agreement with the factor group analysis based on the generally accepted Pmcn space group. Additional spectral features observed near room temperature suggest the presence of a significant number of disordered nitrate groups on alternate lattice sites, although the majority of nitrate groups occupy the ordered sites. As the temperature is lowered, the disordered groups freeze out until near the temperature of reported electrical anomalies (213 K) only the ordered sites are occupied. Improved resolution has resulted in detection of a number of new spectral features while improved depolarization data have resulted in reassignment of several peaks.

The structure of the layered noncentrosymmetric titanosilicate AM-1 (also known as JDF-L1, disodium titanium tetrasilicate dihydrate), Na4Ti2Si8O22·4H2O, grown as small single crystals without the use of organics, has been refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The H atom has been located for the first time, and the hydrogen-bonding scheme is also characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy. All atoms are in general positions except for the Na, the Ti, one Ti-bound O, one Si-bound O and the water O atoms (site symmetries 2, 4, 4, 2 and 2, respectively).

[MnO2(1.0mol%) : Tb4O7(0.5mo%)] doped stoichiometric LiNbO3 (Mn:Tb:SLN) single crystals of 0.5~1.0 mm in diameter and 30~35 mm in length were grown by micro pulling down(µ-PD) method. We investigated the photoluminescence (PL) properties of Mn:Tb:SLN single crystal. The OH- absorption band of the single crystals observed infrared the absorption spectra by using an FT-IR spectrophotometer at room temperature. Homogeneous distributions of Mn and Tb concentration were confirmed by the EPMA and observed defects by optical microscopy.
