Paramagnetic species have been detected in γ-irradiated polycrystalline silver perchlorate – cycloalkene complexes at room temperature and identified as Ag+ cycloalkenyl radicals, with spin density on Ag decreasing from 4.6 to 1.5% with increasing size of the cycloalkenyl ring. The extent of the spin density on Ag increases with the stability of the parent complexes.

Electron spin resonance studies of silver cycloalkenyl radicals by γ-irradiation of polycrystalline silver cycloalkene complexes have been extended to include the effect of alkyl substitution at the double bond, the effect of conjugation in cyclic diolefins and the effect of anions, on the formation of these silver cycloalkenyl radicals.

Abstract NaNO3, Sr(NO3)2, BaS, and MgC2O4·2 H2O powders have been gamma-irradiated at room temperature and their electron spin resonance spectra examined for paramagnetic species. The species identified were NO3 and NO2 radicals in the nitrates, SO2- and S in BaS, and H2C2O4- in magnesium oxalate. Theoretical predictions agree with these assignments.
