Raman spectra of polycrystalline samples of rhombic sulfur have been recorded at 100 and 300 °K, with excitation by the 5145 Å line of an argon ion laser. Spectra of sulfur solutions in carbon disulfide and bromoform were also obtained to aid in assignments. Experimental confirmation is presented of the frequencies of two intramolecular fundamental vibrations, suggested from normal coordinate analysis (one at very low frequency, the other inactive in both Raman and infrared for the free molecule). The spectra are analyzed in terms of the static and correlation crystal field perturbations, and for all except the weakest bands, substantial agreement is obtained. It is concluded that the effects of the two types of interaction are comparable in magnitude, and that a correct analysis must take account of the full symmetry of the unit cell.

The photoinduced birefringence effect in a type of azo-dye-doped poly (methyl methacrylate) was realized when it was pumped by a polarized argon ion laser beam. The transmission of a 632.8 nm probe beam through the pumped sample could be controlled by two kinds of methods: one employed the photoinduced thermal effect of the pump light in the azo-dye-containing sample, and the other changed the temperature of the sample directly. The tunable transmission of the probe light with different pump power and at various temperatures of the sample was investigated in detail.

Laser-induced etching of silicon is used to generate silicon nanocrystals. The pore structure depends on the substrate type and etching laser wavelength. Porous silicon (PS) samples prepared by Nd:YAG laser (1.16 eV) etching of n-type substrate showed a fairly uniform and highly interconnected network of nearly circular pores separated by thin columnar boundaries, while no circular pits were produced by argon- ion laser (2.41 eV) etching under similar conditions. The size and size distribution of the nanocrystals are investigated by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies and analyzed within the framework of quantum confinement models.
