Meisenheimer complexes of some 1-substituted-3,5-dinitrobenzenes

It has been shown by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy that both 3,5-dinitrobenzonitrile and 3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride form Meisenheimer-type σ-complexes with various nucleophiles in solution. In some cases attack appears to occur at both the 2- and 4-positions.
