The reduced time available for product evolution has forced original equipment manufacturers and their suppliers to develop new components and subsystems more rapidly, while taking into consideration the reliability of the final product in terms of its durability. Although durability is nowadays improved through virtual testing, it is mandatory to perform experimental tests for the final release of a product. The complexity of this kind of testing has increased. In the early 20th century, evaluations began to represent a real life time history with standardized load–time histories. This coincided with the introduction of the closed-loop test system to reproduce more realistic time histories. Most tier-1 suppliers perform such testing at their own development centers or at consultant test facilities; however, design engineers and product management need to understand the requirements of the testing and be able to interpret the results to understand how to improve a mechanical component. Most papers published on durability give experimental results for constant-amplitude loads and analytical predictions. However, information on tests with time histories and statistical analysis is very often missing. The present paper reviews the main aspects of durability tests for variable-amplitude loads, including the main statistical analysis conducted to reproduce damage to vehicles traveling on roads and proving grounds in the laboratory.

Computer modeling and simulation are the cornerstones of product design and development in the automotive industry. Computer-aided engineering tools have improved to the extent that virtual testing may lead to significant reduction in prototype building and testing of vehicle designs. In order to make this a reality, we need to assess our confidence in the predictive capabilities of simulation models. As a first step in this direction, this paper deals with developing a metric to compare time histories that are outputs of simulation models to time histories from experimental tests with emphasis on vehicle safety applications. We focus on quantifying discrepancy between time histories as the latter constitute the predominant form of responses of interest in vehicle safety considerations. First we evaluate popular measures used to quantify discrepancy between time histories in fields such as statistics, computational mechanics, signal processing, and data mining. Then we propose a structured combination of some of these measures and define a comprehensive metric that encapsulates the important aspects of time history comparison. The new metric classifies error components associated with three physically meaningful characteristics (phase, magnitude and topology), and utilizes norms, cross-correlation measures and algorithms such as dynamic time warping to quantify discrepancies. Two case studies demonstrate that the proposed metric seems to be more consistent than existing metrics. It is also shown how the metric can be used in conjunction with ratings from subject matter experts to build regression-based validation models.

Considerable research and surveys indicate that skin lesions are an early symptom of skin cancer. Segmentation of skin lesions is still a hot research topic. Dermatological datasets in skin lesion segmentation tasks generated a large number of parameters when data augmented, limiting the application of smart assisted medicine in real life. Hence, this paper proposes an effective feedback attention network (FAC-Net). The network is equipped with the feedback fusion block (FFB) and the attention mechanism block (AMB), through the combination of these two modules, we can obtain richer and more specific feature mapping without data enhancement. Numerous experimental tests were given by us on public datasets (ISIC2018, ISBI2017, ISBI2016), and a good deal of metrics like the Jaccard index (JA) and Dice coefficient (DC) were used to evaluate the results of segmentation. On the ISIC2018 dataset, we obtained results for DC equal to 91.19% and JA equal to 83.99%, compared with the based network. The results of these two main metrics were improved by more than 1%. In addition, the metrics were also improved in the other two datasets. It can be demonstrated through experiments that without any enhancements of the datasets, our lightweight model can achieve better segmentation performance than most deep learning architectures.

To solve the problem of detecting the permeability of the textile machinery, a dedicated test system has been developed based on the pressure difference measuring method. The established system has a number of advantages including simple, fast and accurate. The mathematical model of influencing factors for permeability is derived based on fluid theory, and the relationship of these parameters is achieved. Further investigations are directed towards the inherent characteristics of the control system. Based on the established model and measuring features, an information fusion based clustering control system is proposed to implement the measurement. Using this mechanical structure, a PID control system and a cluster control system have been developed. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to examine the performance of the established system. It is noted that the clustering method has a high dynamic performance and control accuracy. This cluster fusion control method has been successfully utilized in powder metallurgy collar permeability testing.

Methane and ethane are the two main components of natural gas and typically constitute more than 95% of it. In this study, a mixture of 90% CH4/10% C2H6 diluted in 99% Ar was studied at fuel lean (equiv. ratio = 0.5) conditions, for pressures around 1, 4, and 10 atm. Using laser absorption diagnostics, the time histories of CO and H2O were recorded between 1400 and 1800 K. Water is a final product from combustion, and its formation is a good marker of the completion of the combustion process. Carbon monoxide is an intermediate combustion species, a good marker of incomplete/inefficient combustion, as well as a regulated pollutant for the gas turbine industry. Measurements such as these species time histories are important for validating and assessing chemical kinetics models beyond just ignition delay times and laminar flame speeds. Time-history profiles for these two molecules were compared to a state-of-the-art detailed kinetics mechanism as well as to the well-established GRI 3.0 mechanism. Results show that the H2O profile is accurately reproduced by both models. However, discrepancies are observed for the CO profiles. Under the conditions of this study, the CO profiles typically increase rapidly after an induction time, reach a maximum, and then decrease. This maximum CO mole fraction is often largely over-predicted by the models, whereas the depletion rate of CO past this peak is often over-estimated for pressures above 1 atm.

In recent years, various customer order scheduling (OS) models can be found in numerous manufacturing and service systems in which several designers, who have developed modules independently for several different products, convene as a product development team, and that team completes a product design only after all the modules have been designed. In real-life situations, a customer order can have some requirements including due dates, weights of jobs, and unequal ready times. Once encountering different ready times, waiting for future order or job arrivals to raise the completeness of a batch is an efficient policy. Meanwhile, the literature releases that few studies have taken unequal ready times into consideration for order scheduling problem. Motivated by this limitation, this study addresses an OS scheduling model with unequal order ready times. The objective function is to find a schedule to optimize the total completion time criterion. To solve this problem for exact solutions, two lower bounds and some properties are first derived to raise the searching power of a branch-and-bound method. For approximate solution, four simulated annealing approaches and four heuristic genetic algorithms are then proposed. At last, several experimental tests and their corresponding statistical outcomes are also reported to examine the performance of all the proposed methods.

In this work, a new family of distributions, which extends the Beta transmuted family, was obtained, called the Modified Beta Transmuted Family of distribution. This derived family has the Beta Family of Distribution and the Transmuted family of distribution as subfamilies. The Modified beta transmuted frechet, modified beta transmuted exponential, modified beta transmuted gompertz and modified beta transmuted lindley were obtained as special cases. The analytical expressions were studied for some statistical properties of the derived family of distribution which includes the moments, moments generating function and order statistics. The estimates of the parameters of the family were obtained using the maximum likelihood estimation method. Using the exponential distribution as a baseline for the family distribution, the resulting distribution (modified beta transmuted exponential distribution) was studied and its properties. The modified beta transmuted exponential distribution was applied to a real life time data to assess its flexibility in which the results shows a better fit when compared to some competitive models.

Abstract The phenomena of wave propagation in rods was studied both numerically and experimentally. The finite element (FE) code ABAQUS was used for the numerical study while PZT (lead zirconium titanate) sensors and a 50 MHz transient recorder were used experimentally to monitor and to capture the propagation of stress pulses. For the study of damage detection in the rods the analyses and the experiments were repeated by introducing slots in a fixed axial location of the rod. A longitudinal wave was induced in the rod via collinear impact which was modelled in the FE analyses using the force-time history computed from the classical Hertz contact theory. In the experimental measurements this was achieved by a spherical ball impact at one plane end of the rods. It is shown that the predicted and measured strain-time histories for the defect-free rod and for the rods with defect correlate quite well. These results also show that defects can be located using the wave propagation phenomena. A regression analysis technique of the predicted and measured strain histories of the defect free rod and of the rod with defect was also performed. The results show that this technique is more efficient for smaller defects. In particular, it is shown that the area enclosed by the regression curve increases as the defect size increases.
