Results are presented over a wide range of soil textures supporting the linear relation between the logarithm of frost heave rate and the cold-side temperature – overburden pressure ratio proposed by Penner and Ueda. The relation is simple to determine experimentally, permits heave predictions at various other temperature and pressure conditions for engineering purposes, and allows soil frost susceptibility comparisons to be made with the results determined by other laboratories.

A study to observe the effects of overburden pressure and other parameters on the freezing behavior of a saturated soil was undertaken. A linear relationship between effective overburden pressure and the flow of water into or out of a freezing soil was observed. The effective pressure at which no flow occurred was termed the shutoff pressure. At pressures less than the shutoff pressure water was sucked to the freezing front resulting in segregated ice, ice lensing, and heaving. This heaving could significantly exceed the heave due to the volumetric expansion of the in situ porewater. At pressures greater than the shutoff pressure water was expelled from the freezing front thereby reducing the volume of in situ water and resulting in a relatively small amount of heave. Shutoff pressure was observed to depend on soil type, stress history, and freezing temperature. The effects of overburden pressure upon flow of water in a freezing soil and frost heave were recommended as additional criteria for assessing soil frost susceptibility.

In previous work it has been shown that when a soil sample freezes in a one-dimensional manner under different cold-side step temperatures but the same warm-side temperature, at the formation of the final ice lens the water intake flux is proportional to the temperature gradient across the frozen fringe. The constant of proportionality has been called the segregation potential and this linear relation constitutes the coupling between heat and mass flow in a general theory of frost heave. This paper shows experimentally that the segregation potential is also a function of the average suction in the frozen fringe which is readily expressed in terms of the suction at the frost front. As a result it is also shown that measured water intake flux during freezing is dependent on the freezing path used to initiate the final ice lens. A thermodynamic explanation of the dependence of segregation potential on suction in the frozen fringe is also offered.

A set of factors which reduces the variability due to ambient conditions of the hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen emission indices has been developed. These factors can be used to correct an emission index to reference day ambient conditions. The correction factors, which vary with engine rated pressure ratio for NOx and idle pressure ratio for HC and CO, can be applied to a wide range of current technology gas turbine engines. The factors are a function of only the combustor inlet temperature and ambient humidity.

Dilute nitric, sulfuric, and perchloric acids are applicable as solvents for spectrophotometry up to 250°C over the following ranges: 0 to 1.0 f HNO3 from 0.6 to 1.2 μ; 0 to 0.2 f H2SO4 from 0.25 to 1.2 μ; and 0 to 1.0 f DClO4 from 0.25 to 1.8 μ. Each of these acids reacts measurably with the titanium cell wall and the sapphire windows at rates which increase with acidity and temperature. This corrosion affects the spectral measurements as a function of time and is associated with deterioration of cell window surfaces and the presence in the sample of dissolved and suspended corrosion products. These results are part of our more general program for the development of equipment and technique for routine spectrophotometry of pure liquids and solutions over a wide range of temperature and pressure.

The crude oil pipeline from MoHe to DaQing (hereafter called Mo-Da pipeline) is part of China-Russia oil pipeline. Mo-Da pipeline is the first pipeline that through high latitude cold regions of China. The pipeline is in so complicated geography environment that many kinds of permafrost hazard are easily to happen including frost heave, thaw settlement, slope instabilities, and collapse and so on. The pipeline and the permafrost act and react upon one another. On one hand, soil frost heave and thaw settlement can produce extra stresses on pipe walls, which may result in centralized stresses and plastic deformations under certain conditions, even causes pipeline faults. On the other hand, buried pipeline will disturb ambient environment and then degrade the permafrost soil and finally impact safety of the pipeline. This paper mainly introduces the permafrost hazards of Mo-Da pipeline and demonstrates some methods for monitoring the influence of permafrost.

Chemical composition and thermodynamics properties of different thermal plasmas are calculated in a wide range of temperatures (300–100,000 K) and pressures (10−6–100 atm). The calculation is performed in dissociation and ionization temperature ranges using statistical thermodynamic modeling. The thermodynamic properties considered in this study are enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, specific heat at constant pressure, specific heat ratio, speed of sound, mean molar mass, and degree of ionization. The calculations have been done for seven pure plasmas such as hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and argon. In this study, the Debye–Huckel cutoff criterion in conjunction with the Griem’s self-consistent model is applied for terminating the electronic partition function series and to calculate the reduction of the ionization potential. The Rydberg and Ritz extrapolation laws have been used for energy levels which are not observed in tabulated data. Two different methods called complete chemical equilibrium and progressive methods are presented to find the composition of available species. The calculated pure plasma properties are then presented as functions of temperature and pressure, in terms of a new set of thermodynamically self-consistent correlations for efficient use in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. The results have been shown excellent agreement with literature. The results from pure plasmas as a reliable reference source in conjunction with an alternative method are then used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of any arbitrary plasma mixtures (mixed plasmas) having elemental atoms of H, He, C, N, O, Ne, and Ar in their chemical structure.

A single stage, high speed, high pressure ratio radial inflow turbine was designed for a single shaft gas turbine engine in the 200 kW power range. A model turbine has been tested in a cold rig facility with correct simulation of the important non-dimensional parameters. Performance measurements over a wide range of operation were made, together with extensive volute and exhaust traverses, so that gas velocities and incidence and deviation angles could be deduced. The turbine efficiency was lower than expected at all but the lowest speed. The rotor incidence and exit swirl angles, as obtained from the rig test data, were very similar to the design assumptions. However, evidence was found of a region of separation in the nozzle vane passages, presumably caused by a very high curvature in the endwall just upstream of the vane leading edges. The effects of such a separation are shown to be consistent with the observed performance.
