The finite element method has been used for determining the stress distribution and the displacements due to gravity around an unlined tunnel driven through a semi-infinite medium, characterized by three idealized material behaviors reflecting approximately a short term behavior of natural undisturbed insensitive and sensitive clays. The knowledge of stress and displacement fields around an unlined tunnel can be used for evaluating the need for supports according to the acceptability of expected deformations.

Stress and displacement fields are presented for uniaxially loaded infinite elastic continua with a doubly periodic array of holes, elastic or rigid inclusions with or without overlapping. The results are obtained by using an appropriate form of the finite-element method. When possible, a numerical comparison has been made with known solutions. In the treatment of not previously studied configurations, the convergence is ascertained by observing the trend with finer discretizations.

Cracking in non-load-bearing internal partition walls is a serious problem that frequently occurs in new buildings within the short term after putting them into service or even before completion of construction. Sometimes, it is so considerable that it cannot be accepted by the occupiers. The article presents tests of cracking in ceramic walls with a door opening connected in a rigid and flexible way along vertical edges. The first analyzes were conducted using the finite element method (FEM), and afterward, the measurements of deformations and stresses in walls on deflecting floors were performed on a full scale in the actual building structure. The measurements enabled to determine floor deformations leading to cracking of walls and to establish a dependency between the values of tensile stresses within the area of the door opening corners and their location along the length of walls and type of vertical connection with the structure.

This article introduced the up-to-date research progress on the tool-soil interacting problem of tillage; and investigated the situation of constitutive relation usage in the finite element method (FEM). A review including the dynamic effect on the performance of tillage operation with FEM has been conducted. It showed that the virtual reality method with FEM had made much progress in evaluating the tool draft, distribution position of stress and strain, displacement fields and acceleration in soil-tool interactions, soft ware package of computer aided design of tillage tools; it will be a low cost and high efficiency assistive tool in the development procedure of tillage tools, and can be applied to study and analyze the performance of resulting prototypes.

The classical Savin solution for the stress induced in an orthotropic plate containing an elliptical hole places no restrictions on remote rigid-body rotations. In this paper the Savin procedure is used to obtain a solution for which remote rigid-body rotations are required to be zero. The validity of these new results is demonstrated by comparing predicted displacement fields near a circular hole in specially orthotropic composite panels with those measured using moire´ techniques as well as those predicted using the finite element method. The stress distribution at the interface junction of an elastic inclusion embedded in a brittle matrix is examined. Solutions are derived for the stress and displacement fields near the junction formed by the intersection of the interfaces between the inclusion and the matrix. The stress field consists of symmetric (mode I) and skew-symmetric (mode II) components. The magnitude of the intensity factor associated with each mode of deformation is determined using a combination of the finite element method and a contour integral. The numerical results of the stresses near the interface junction of two different inclusion geometries show that the asymptotic solutions of the stresses are in agreement with those from the finite element prediction when higher-order terms are considered. The implications of the results for the failure of particle-reinforced and two-phase brittle materials are discussed.

At present, the plate shell structure is broadly used in the engineering field, and the finite element method is the main method to analysis of the structural design. Because many variables are used in the finite element method and the computation is complex, this paper used Bezier surface patches as the admissible displacement fields to represent the shell’s middle surface displacement and rotation components, the deformation of the composite material cylindrical shell and shallow sphere shell under the loads are studied with a Semi-analytical procedure. The results show that semi-analytical and analytical procedure are in good agreement with the results of the analysis, it can be applied in the project.

Fracture mechanics is a new branch in engineering. The development of modern mathematical background with different numerical methods has supported fracture mechanics to solve many complex fracture problems in practice effectively. This article introduces the application of quarter - point singular element in finite element method to simulate crack tip behavior in two dimensional problems. The ANSYS and FRANC2D programs are used to compute stress intensity factor, simulate the stress and displacement fields near crack tip and simulate crack propagation. The calculation results are compared with analytical results and the results in other articles.

For a suction pile, drainage condition influences the magnitude of under-pressure ('suction'). As the growth of suction, the break-out resistance transforms from local shear failure, local tensile failure to general shear failure. This paper will discuss the failure mechanism of suction pile cluster under vertical load with different drainage conditions. The finite element method and software ABAQUS are employed to analysis these problems.
