Prediction of friction capacity of driven piles in clay using the support vector machine

The support vector machine (SVM) is an emerging machine learning technique where prediction error and model complexity are simultaneously minimized. This paper examines the potential of SVM to predict the friction capacity of driven piles in clay. This SVM is firmly based on the statistical learning theory and uses the regression technique by introducing accuracy (ε) insensitive loss function. The results are compared with those from a widely used artificial neural network (ANN) model. Overall, the SVM showed good performance and is proven to be better than ANN model. A sensitivity analysis has been also performed to investigate the importance of the input parameters. The study shows that SVM has the potential to be a useful and practical tool for prediction of friction capacity of driven piles in clay.

Stress-strain relationship of geomaterials is important to numerical analysis in geotechnical engineering. It is difficult to be represented by conventional constitutive model accurately. Artificial neural network (ANN) has been proposed as a more effective approach to represent this complex and nonlinear relationship, but ANN itself still has some limitations that restrict the applicability of the method. In this paper, an alternative method, support vector machine (SVM), is proposed to simulate this type of complex constitutive relationship. The SVM model can overcome the limitations of ANN model while still processing the advantages over the traditional model. The application examples show that it is an effective and accurate modeling approach for stress-strain relationship representation for geomaterials.

This research presents a novel hybrid prediction technique, namely, self-tuning least squares support vector machine (ST-LSSVM), to accurately model the friction capacity of driven piles in cohesive soil. The hybrid approach uses LS-SVM as a supervised-learning-based predictor to build an accurate input-output relationship of the dataset and SOS method to optimize the σ and γ parameters of the LS-SVM. Evaluation and investigation of the ST-LSSVM were conducted on 45 training data and 20 testing data of driven pile load tests that were compiled from previous studies. The prediction accuracy of the ST-LSSVM was then compared to other machine learning methods, namely, LS-SVM and BPNN, and was benchmarked with the previous results by neural network (NN) from Goh using coefficient of correlation (R), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE). The comparison showed that the ST-LSSVM performed better than LS-SVM, BPNN, and NN in terms of R, RMSE, and MAE. This comprehensive evaluation confirmed the capability of hybrid approach SOS and LS-SVM to modeling the accurate friction capacity of driven piles in clay. It makes for a reliable and robust assistance tool in helping all geotechnical engineers estimate friction pile capacity.

Bus reliability is essential for maintaining the steady state of electrical network in power plants and power transformer stations. Researches on techniques and methods to achieve highly reliable and intelligent bus protection are very important. A new bus protection method based on parameter optimization of the support vector machine (SVM) is provided in this study. Various types of fault data were collected and used as samples for sorting comparison and analysis of different bus faults. Data were obtained by comparing the SVM method with the artificial neural network (ANN) method. The results suggest that the SVM model using RBF kernel can better distinguish among bus normal operation and different bus fault types than the ANN model, and meet the precision requirements for bus protection.

Fraud in communication has been increasing dramatically due to the new modern technologies and the global superhighways of communication, resulting in loss of revenues and quality of service in telecommunication providers especially in Africa and Asia.  One of the dominant types of fraud is SIM box bypass fraud whereby SIM cards are used to channel national and multinational calls away from mobile operators and deliver as local calls. Therefore it is important to find techniques that can detect this type of fraud efficiently. In this paper, two classification techniques, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were developed to detect this type of fraud.   The classification uses nine selected features of data extracted from Customer Database Record.  The performance of ANN is compared with SVM to find which model gives the best performance. From the experiments, it is found that SVM model gives higher accuracy compared to ANN by giving the classification accuracy of 99.06% compared with ANN model, 98.71% accuracy. Besides, better accuracy performance, SVM also requires less computational time compared to ANN since it takes lesser amount of time in model building and training.

The global prevalence of diabetes is rapidly increasing. Studies support the necessity of screening and interventions for prediabetes, which could result in serious complications and diabetes. This study aimed at developing an intelligence-based screening model for prediabetes. Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used, excluding subjects with diabetes. The KNHANES 2010 data(n=4685)were used for training and internal validation, while data from KNHANES 2011(n=4566)were used for external validation. We developed two models to screen for prediabetes using an artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) and performed a systematic evaluation of the models using internal and external validation. We compared the performance of our models with that of a screening score model based on logistic regression analysis for prediabetes that had been developed previously. The SVM model showed the areas under the curve of 0.731 in the external datasets, which is higher than those of the ANN model (0.729) and the screening score model (0.712), respectively. The prescreening methods developed in this study performed better than the screening score model that had been developed previously and may be more effective method for prediabetes screening.

This study examines the feasibility of applying Wavelet-Support Vector Machine (W-SVM) model in forecasting palm oil price. The conjunction method wavelet-support vector machine (W-SVM) is obtained by the integration of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method and support vector machine (SVM). In W-SVM model, wavelet transform is used to decompose data series into two parts; approximation series and details series. This decomposed series were then used as the input to the SVM model to forecast the palm oil price. This study also utilizes the application of partial correlation-based input variable selection as the preprocessing steps in determining the best input to the model. The performance of the W-SVM model was then compared with the classical SVM model and also artificial neural network (ANN) model. The empirical result shows that the addition of wavelet technique in W-SVM model enhances the forecasting performance of classical SVM and performs better than ANN.

Support Vector Machine (SVM) model optimized by K-Fold cross-validation was built to predict and evaluate the degradation of concrete strength in a complicated marine environment. Meanwhile, several mathematical models, such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Decision Tree (DT), were also built and compared with SVM to determine which one could make the most accurate predictions. The material factors and environmental factors that influence the results were considered. The materials factors mainly involved the original concrete strength, the amount of cement replaced by fly ash and slag. The environmental factors consisted of the concentration of Mg2+, SO42-, Cl-, temperature and exposing time. It was concluded from the prediction results that the optimized SVM model appeared to perform better than other models in predicting the concrete strength. Based on SVM model, a simulation method of variables limitation was used to determine the sensitivity of various factors and the influence degree of these factors on the degradation of concrete strength.

Background: Cell lytic enzyme is a kind of highly evolved protein, which can destroy the cell structure and kill the bacteria. Compared with antibiotics, cell lytic enzyme will not cause serious problem of drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria. Thus, the study of cell wall lytic enzymes aims at finding an efficient way for curing bacteria infectious. Compared with using antibiotics, the problem of drug resistance becomes more serious. Therefore, it is a good choice for curing bacterial infections by using cell lytic enzymes. Cell lytic enzyme includes endolysin and autolysin and the difference between them is the purpose of the break of cell wall. The identification of the type of cell lytic enzymes is meaningful for the study of cell wall enzymes. Objective: In this article, our motivation is to predict the type of cell lytic enzyme. Cell lytic enzyme is helpful for killing bacteria, so it is meaningful for study the type of cell lytic enzyme. However, it is time consuming to detect the type of cell lytic enzyme by experimental methods. Thus, an efficient computational method for the type of cell lytic enzyme prediction is proposed in our work. Method: We propose a computational method for the prediction of endolysin and autolysin. First, a data set containing 27 endolysins and 41 autolysins is built. Then the protein is represented by tripeptides composition. The features are selected with larger confidence degree. At last, the classifier is trained by the labeled vectors based on support vector machine. The learned classifier is used to predict the type of cell lytic enzyme. Results: Following the proposed method, the experimental results show that the overall accuracy can attain 97.06%, when 44 features are selected. Compared with Ding's method, our method improves the overall accuracy by nearly 4.5% ((97.06-92.9)/92.9%). The performance of our proposed method is stable, when the selected feature number is from 40 to 70. The overall accuracy of tripeptides optimal feature set is 94.12%, and the overall accuracy of Chou's amphiphilic PseAAC method is 76.2%. The experimental results also demonstrate that the overall accuracy is improved by nearly 18% when using the tripeptides optimal feature set. Conclusion: The paper proposed an efficient method for identifying endolysin and autolysin. In this paper, support vector machine is used to predict the type of cell lytic enzyme. The experimental results show that the overall accuracy of the proposed method is 94.12%, which is better than some existing methods. In conclusion, the selected 44 features can improve the overall accuracy for identification of the type of cell lytic enzyme. Support vector machine performs better than other classifiers when using the selected feature set on the benchmark data set.

SVM(Support Vector Machine) is a new artificial intelligence methodolgy, basing on structural risk mininization principle, which has better generalization than the traditional machine learning and SVM shows powerfulability in learning with limited samples. To solve the problem of lack of engine fault samples, FLS-SVM theory, an improved SVM, which is a method is applied. 10 common engine faults are trained and recognized in the paper.The simulated datas are generated from PW4000-94 engine influence coefficient matrix at cruise, and the results show that the diagnostic accuracy of FLS-SVM is better than LS-SVM.

In order to effectively predict the sieving efficiency of a vibrating screen, experiments to investigate the sieving efficiency were carried out. Relation between sieving efficiency and other working parameters in a vibrating screen such as mesh aperture size, screen length, inclination angle, vibration amplitude, and vibration frequency was analyzed. Based on the experiments, least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) was established to predict the sieving efficiency, and adaptive genetic algorithm and cross-validation algorithm were used to optimize the parameters in LS-SVM. By the examination of testing points, the prediction performance of least square support vector machine is better than that of the existing formula and neural network, and its average relative error is only 4.2%.
