This paper presents the results of an experimental study aimed at evaluating the elementary filtration properties of a fine cement grout injected in a sand. In a first step, the experimental setup or filtration cell, specially developed for injecting thin samples of sand put under stress, is presented. Next, the results of an experimental programme carried out with this cell are presented, allowing for the study of the influence of basic parameters (density index, consolidation stress, cement concentration in the grout, and injection flow rate) on the filtration properties of a typical grout composed of fine cement. A filtration coefficient is then defined, allowing for characterization of the elementary filtration properties of the tested grout by the sand matrix. Finally, the respective influence of tested parameters on the value of this coefficient is presented and discussed.Key words: cement grout, suspension, filtration, flow, sand, injection.

The building sector is the largest consumer of energy, but there are still major scientific challenges in this field. The façade, being the interface between the exterior and interior space, plays a key role in the energy efficiency of a building. In this context, this paper focuses on a ventilated bioclimatic wall for nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB). The aim of this study is to investigate an experimental setup based on a hot box for the characterization of the thermal performances of the ventilated wall. A specific ventilated prototype and an original thermal metrology are developed. This paper presents the ventilated prototype, the experimental setup, and the experimental results on the thermal performances of the ventilated wall. The influence of the air space thickness and the air flow rate on the thermal performances of the ventilated wall is studied.

Vehicular acoustic noise evaluations are a concern of researchers due to health and comfort effects on humans and are fundamental for anyone interested in mitigating audio noise. This paper focuses on the evaluation of the noise level inside a vehicle by using statistical tools. First, an experimental setup was developed with microphones and a microcomputer located strategically on the car’s panel, and measurements were carried out with different conditions such as car window position, rain, traffic, and car speed. Regression analysis was performed to evaluate the similarity of the noise level from those conditions. Thus, we were able to discuss the relevance of the variables that contribute to the noise level inside a car. Finally, our results revealed that the car speed is strongly correlated to interior noise levels, suggesting the most relevant noise sources are in the vehicle itself.

The fitness-for-service code requires the characterization of non-aligned multiple flaws for the flaw evaluation, which is performed using a flaw proximity rule. Worldwide almost all codes provide own proximity rule, often with unclear technical bases of the application of proximity rule to ductile fracture. To clarify the appropriate proximity rule for non-aligned multiple flaws in fully plastic fracture, fracture tests on flat plate specimen with non-aligned multiple through wall flaws were conducted at ambient temperature. The emphasis of this study was put on the flaw alignment rule, which determines whether non-aligned flaws are treated as independent or aligned onto the same plane for the purpose of flaw evaluations. The effects of the flaw separation and flaw size on the maximum load were investigated. The experimental results were compared with the estimations of the collapse load using the alignment rules in the ASME Section XI, BS7910 and API 579-1 codes. A new estimation procedure specific to the fully plastic fracture was proposed and compared with the comparison with the experimental results.

We present an experimental study on the electrofluidic transistor in this paper. A novel and easy way to integrate the transistor into a microchannel is developed. The performances of the insulating layer, especially the leakage current under gate voltage, are carefully characterized. The change of surface charge on silica surface by gate polarization is measured, however, by measuring the streaming current, the gating effect on zeta potential has not been observed. This result should imply new assumption in the understanding of the charge regulation in the electrical double layer under gate polarization.
