Terfenol-D (Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe2) has a giant magnetostrictive effect with a saturation strain of 1.1 × 10−3. Possible structural changes due to an applied magnetic field and as a function of temperature are examined by a polarization-dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure study at two temperatures above and below the spin reorientation temperature, Ts = 10 °C, at two applied magnetic fields, B = 0 and 5.5 kG, and at two edges, the Fe K edge and the Dy LIII edge. To within ±0.003 Å (1 Å = 10−10 m) no internal distortion of the unit cell was observed.
