Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy has been used to investigate the transitions n2S ← 42S (n = 6 to 55) and n2D3/2.5/2 ← 42S (n = 5 to 50) of 39K. Wavelengths of these transitions have been measured to an accuracy of 1 part in 107, and term values, quantum defects, fine structure splittings, and isotope shifts have been evaluated. The value of the ionization limit determined from these measurements is 35 009.8232 ± 0.0010 cm−1.

Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy has been used to investigate the transitions n2S ← 62S (n = 9 to 54) and n2D3/2.5/2 ← 62S (n = 7 to 53), and saturated absorption for the quadrupole transitions 52D3/2.5/2 ← 62S. Wavelengths of these transitions have been measured to an accuracy of 1 part in 107, and term values, quantum defects, and fine structure splittings evaluated. Series formulae have been used with the term values to obtain the ionization limit 31406.6376 ± 0.0016 cm−1.

Doppler-free, two-photon spectroscopy has been used to investigate the transitions n2S ← 52S and n2D ← 52S of atomic rubidium, from n = 9 to 116 and n = 7 to 124, respectively, only 7.3 cm−1 from the ionization limit. Wavelengths of these transitions have been measured to an accuracy of 1 part in 107, and series formulae computed for term values and quantum defects. Hyperfine structure splittings in the 92S to 132S levels have also been measured.
