The shift and broadening constants for D1, D2 lines of Cs – noble gas and Cs – light molecular gas(H2, N2) systems are reported. The total cross section for elastic collisions is calculated from our experimental results. Some considerations are made on the mixing between 62P1/2 and 62P3/2 for these systems.

Absolute total cross sections for single-electron-capture are measured for [Formula: see text] and N+ ions traversing N2 molecular gas of collision energies in the range of 0.60 to 1.5 keV. These cross sections are found to be in the range of 3.97 - 6.25 Å2 for [Formula: see text] ions, and in the range of 0.46 - 1.67 Å2 for N+ ions. A comparison is made between the present measurements of the total cross sections of the N+ + N2 system and all the experimental results, which are represented by B. G. Lindsay et al.,1 for the O+ + N2 system. The present measurements of the total cross section of the N+ + N2 system are in partial agreement with measurements of B. G. Lindsay et al.,1 and in an excellent agreement with the measurements of Moran et al.,2 The present measurements of the total cross sections of the [Formula: see text] system are compared to the theoretical calculations and the experimental results of the same system.23 The results are in disagreement with each other.

The total cross sections for the π+π− photoproduction on the deuteron were measured in an energy range of 0.8 to 1.1 GeV. The obtained total cross section for the quasi-free π+π− photoproduction on the deuteron was about 60 % of those on the free proton. The cross section for Δ++Δ− photoproduction was derived from the non-quasi-free π+π− photoproduction events. It was smaller than the previous data.

Extremely thin layers of ribonuclease were irradiated with slow protons and the differential inactivation cross section determined for various proton energies in the range from 0.8 to 60 keV. At higher proton energies the inactivation cross section is not strongly dependent on energy but with decreasing proton energy it decreases rapidly, reaches a sharp minimum at 1.2 keV and increases again at still smaller energies. By comparing the experimentally determined inactivation cross sections with the cross sections for energy loss in elastic nuclear collisions and in ionizations, respectively, elastic collisions were demonstrated to destroy, in fact, the enzymatic activity of ribonuclease. The energy required for an inactivation by nuclear collision is only one fourth of the energy necessary for an inactivation by ionization.

The total cross sections for the scattering of positrons by helium have been measured by the method of transmission in the 16 to 270 eV energy range. The experimental results are higher than those of Canter et al. but are in reasonable agreement with recent results of Griffith et al., and at high energies tend towards Born approximation calculations. The integral of the cross section over positron momentum is smaller than the sum rule estimate made by Bransden et al. A tentative value of (0.034 ± 0.017)πa02 is assigned to the positronium formation cross section at threshold.

Abstract– The interactions of low-energy electrons (<20 eV) with D-ribose molecules, namely, electron scattering and dissociative attachment, are studied. The results of these studies showed that the fragmentation of D-ribose molecules occurs effectively even at an electron energy close to zero. as well as in the energy range 5.50–9.50 eV. In the total cross section of electron scattering by molecules, resonance features at energies of 5.00–9.00 eV in the region of formation of ionic fragments C3H4O2–, C2H3O2–, OH–, associated with the destruction of molecular heterocycles, were experimentally discovered for the first time. The correlation of the features observed in the scattering and dissociative electron attachment cross sections is analyzed.

Consideration is given to the analysis of data on the cross sections of elastic and inelastic col-lisions of electrons with noble gas atoms. The transport (diffusion) cross section, the excita-tion and ionization cross sections are studied. For the selected sets of experimental and theo-retical data, optimal analytical formulas are found and approximation coefficients are select-ed for them. The obtained semi-empirical formulas allow us to reproduce the cross section values in a wide range of collision energies from 0.001 to 10000 eV with an accuracy of sev-eral percent.
