The ν3 infrared band of CH4 has been measured in liquid solutions in SF6 and CCl4 at several temperatures, and in high pressure gas mixtures with Ar at several pressures. The band profiles were compared with those computed using the semi-classical extended rotational diffusion models for molecular rotation in fluids, and values of the angular momentum correlation time, τ, determined. The density and temperature dependence of τ was in accord with the interpretation of τ−1 as a collision frequency. The mean square torques were obtained from the fourth moments of spectral contours.
