Short range correlations in nuclei are introduced into the nuclear wave function using a unitary operator whose form was originally suggested by Villars. Their effect on positive pion photoproduction from 16O is found to be small for the correlation function we have assumed.

The coherent state formalism is applied to the calculation of the phonon frequencies in quantum crystals. The normal mode frequencies are determined using an expansion in powers of the displacements of the centers of the single-particle distributions rather than of the particles. The known results of the RPA and of Meissner's inversion of the displacement–displacement correlation function are derived in a simple way, and the connection with Feynman's method for liquid helium is discussed. The method of constant short-range correlations is introduced and compared with the recent work of Koehler and Werthamer.

With the ansatz that the ground state wave function for a helium-like atom is of the form of [Formula: see text], the optimal correlation function [Formula: see text] is determined. Here x and y are the distances of the electrons from the nucleus, while z is that between the electrons. The parameters α and β are determined by minimizing the energy of the system. The method is particularly useful for calculating quantities which are sensitive to the short-range electron–electron correlation.

Short range correlations are introduced using the unitary operator method in a relativistic theory of nuclear matter based on the Hartree-Fock approximation. Pion exchange, including the tensor contribution, is taken into account. It is found that both the tensor contribution of pion exchange and short range correlations soften the equation of state. The neutron matter equation of state is also discussed.

The length of coding sequence (CDS) series in bacterial genomes were regarded as a fluctuating system and characterized by the methods of statistical physics. The distribution and the correlation properties of CDS for 47 genomes were investigated. The distribution was found to be approximated by an exponential function while the correlation analysis revealed short range correlations.
