Elastic scattering of 100 MeV protons by 3He and 4He has been measured over a wide range of angles. Analysis of the small-angle results was carried out using a superposition of nucleon-nucleon amplitudes computed with both modern and old phase shifts. No significant differences were found in the accuracy of the predictions resulting from the two sets, but in both cases the 3He results were better than those of 4He. The peaking evident in the backward p–4He scattering but not seen in heavy nuclei has been interpreted in terms of an exchange interaction using an optical model analysis.

Elastic scattering cross sections for the interaction of 100-MeV protons with 6Li, 7Li, 9Be, and 12C have been analyzed using the optical model. The experimental differential cross sections are reasonably reproduced. It has been found that no average set of geometrical parameters can provide a quantitative fit to the experimental data for all of these light nuclei; they must be treated individually, with optimum optical potential parameters fluctuating from one nucleus to another. Other features revealed in this analysis include: (1) the spin–orbit radius parameter is smaller than those of the real and imaginary parts of the potential, (2) surface and volume absorption potentials give equally good fit to the experimental results, (3) the radius parameters of the real and imaginary potentials differed from each other, and (4) the radius parameter of the real part of the potential is larger than those used for heavy nuclei.

The scattering of 100-MeV protons from 11B and 16O has been studied. An optical-model analysis of the elastic scattering on these nuclei has been performed and a consistent set of optical potential parameters which gave a good fit to the experimental results was obtained. In the inelastic scattering on 11B, it has been found that the first and third excited states were weakly excited whereas the second excited state was fairly strongly excited. The results were explained in terms of the unified model.

Optical model analysis of the elastic scattering analysis of α + 40Ca at Elab=104 and 141.7 MeV have been performed using the folding model approach of the nuclear reaction video (NRV) knowledge base code. The M3Y-type effective nucleon-nucleon interaction derived using the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) approach for mass number A=40 was used to obtain the results. Elastic scattering differential cross section data were obtained for this system at two bombarding energies. The calculated differential cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental results and the anticipated mass dependence of the M3Y-type effective interaction improved the results at forward angles. This shows that, the mass dependence of the M3Y-type effective interaction in our results should be of value in the description of the scattering of other nuclear systems
