THE (n, p) CROSS SECTIONS OF TITANIUM ISOTOPES FOR NEUTRON ENERGIES BETWEEN 13.6 MeV AND 19.5 MeV

Using enriched titanium samples, the activation (n, p) and (n, pn; n, np; n,d) cross sections have been measured for the five isotopes of titanium in the neutron energy range from 13.6 to 19.5 MeV. The results were compared with calculations based primarily upon Bodansky's theory (1962), where the first proton emission cross section was taken to be the sum of (n, p) and (n, pn). The (n, pn) cross section was separated from the experimental (n, pn; n, np; n, d) cross section by a multiple-emission calculation. Using the nuclear temperature derived from the experimental data, good agreement was achieved between experiment and theory. It was found that the parameters of Bodansky's equation for the titanium isotopes could be adopted directly from the mass parabolas (Dewdney 1963). It was also found that the (n, p) cross sections were not influenced appreciably by the neutron closed shell.

This paper deals with the problem of eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors for rings whose cross section may be decomposed in basic rectangular cross sections. The solution is derived from a solution of the in-plane eigenvalue problem for rectangular cross-section thick rings. A good agreement between theoretical results and experimental data is obtained.

A detailed description is given of a technique in which emissions from H and H2 are used to calibrate an apparatus used for electron-impact emission cross-section measurements in the wavelength range 90–130 nm. Absolute emission cross sections have been measured at 200 eV electron-impact energy for the 120 nm N I line following dissociative excitation of N2 and for the Ar and Ar+ lines at 104.8, 106.7, 92.0, and 93.8 nm respectively. Good agreement with earlier works is obtained in the case of the N I line when earlier data are renormalized to take into account the recent revision of the cross section for production of Lyman α from H2. Measurements of the 104.8 and 106.7 nm lines suggest a 40% cascade component for the latter line at energies of 200 eV and above.

A general method of analysis is presented for determining the developing velocity field and pressure drop for laminar flow in the entrance region of ducts having arbitrary cross sections. Application of the solution method is made to rectangular ducts and to triangular ducts. Available experimental data are compared with the analytical results and good agreement is found to prevail. Development characteristics for six ducts are brought together and compared, and various trends are identified.

Spectroscopic properties of neodymium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride were measured at different temperatures from 35 K to 350 K in specimens with 1 at% Nd3+ concentration. The absorption spectrum was measured at room temperature from 400 to 900 nm. The decay dynamics of the 4F3/2 multiplet was investigated by measuring the fluorescence lifetime as a function of the sample temperature, and the radiative decay time was derived by extrapolation to 0 K. The stimulated-emission cross-sections of the transitions from the 4F3/2 to the 4I9/2, 4I11/2, and 4I13/2 levels were obtained from the fluorescence spectrum measured at different temperatures, using the Aull–Jenssen technique. The results show consistency with most results previously published at room temperature, extending them over a broader range of temperatures. A semi-empirical formula for the magnitude of the stimulated-emission cross-section as a function of temperature in the 250 K to 350 K temperature range, is presented for the most intense transitions to the 4I11/2 and 4I13/2 levels.

Abstract This paper is concerned with the application of the theory of thin shells to several problems for toroidal shells with elliptical cross section. These problems are as follows: (a) Closed shell subjected to uniform normal wall pressure. (b) Open shell subjected to end bending moments. (c) Combination of the results for the first and second problems in such a way as to obtain results for the stresses and deformations in Bourdon tubes. In all three problems the distribution of stresses is axially symmetric but only in the first problem are the displacements axially symmetric. The magnitude of stresses and deformations for given loads depends in all three problems on the magnitude of the two parameters bc/ah and b/c where b and c are the semiaxes of the elliptical section, a is the distance of the center of the section from the axis of revolution, and h is the thickness of the wall of the shell. For sufficiently small values of bc/ah trigonometric series solutions are obtained. For sufficiently large values of bc/ah asymptotic solutions are obtained. Numerical results are given for various quantities of practical interest as a function of bc/ah for the values 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4 of the semiaxes ratio b/c. It is suggested that the analysis be extended to still smaller values of b/c and to cross sections other than elliptical.

The paper presents the results of measurement of the total cross sections for reactions 4,6He + Si and 6,7,9Li + Si in the beam energy range 5−50 A⋅MeV. The enhancements of the total cross sections for reaction 6He + Si compared with reaction 4He + Si, and 9Li + Si compared with reactions 6,7Li + Si have been observed. The performed microscopic analysis of total cross sections for reactions 6He + Si and 9Li + Si based on numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for external neutrons of projectile nuclei 6He and 9Li yielded good agreement with experimental data.

The relativistic description of the proton-nucleus elastic scattering can be considered within the framework of a relativistic optical potential model. The elastic scattering of proton with the nuclei 12 C , 16 O , 20 Ne , and 24 Mg at 800 MeV and 1.04 GeV are studied for relativistic and nonrelativistic treatments. The real optical potentials and the differential cross sections of these reactions are calculated. The obtained results are compared with the corresponding results obtained from the calculation depending on the Woods–Saxon optical potential which were adjusted to fit the experimental data. The present results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

In this work, we simultaneously reanalyzed the differential elastic scattering cross-sections ([Formula: see text]) and the vector analyzing power ([Formula: see text]) of [Formula: see text]He elastic scattering. This analysis was performed using the folded optical model for both real central and spin-orbit (SO) potentials, respectively. For the imaginary central, we used the usual Woods-Saxon (WS) form. Three different model density distributions are used to calculate the potential. We aimed to examine the applicability of the microscopically derived SO potential and the structure effect of 6He nucleus. The presence of the [Formula: see text] experimental data of [Formula: see text]He makes it interesting for this study. Our calculations showed that the three densities gave similar predictions for the cross-sections data. The three microscopic SO potentials calculations of [Formula: see text] are not in a good agreement with the experimental data. We concluded that the SO formalism in its current form needs more investigations for exotic halo nuclei.

Concrete cracking causes a gradual change in strain distributions along the cross section height of reinforced concrete beams, which will finally affect their instantaneous stiffness. A method for assessing the stiffness is proposed based on the gradual change, which is considered through modeling different strain distributions for key sections in cracked regions. Internal force equilibria are adopted to find a solution to top strains and neutral axes in the models, and then the inertias of the key sections are calculated to assess the beam stiffness. The proposed method has been validated using experimental results obtained from tests on five reinforced concrete beams. The predicted stiffness and displacements are shown to provide a good agreement with experimental data. The instantaneous stiffness is proven to greatly depend on the crack number and depth. This dependence can be exactly reflected by the proposed method through simulating the gradual change in concrete strain distributions.

The plane-wave Born approximation with Coulomb, relativistic, and exchange corrections is employed to obtain the K-, L1-, L2-, L3-, and M-shell ionization cross sections of a number of atoms bombarded by electrons and positrons in the energy range varying from the threshold of ionization to 1 GeV. Transverse interaction of virtual photons with atoms is also included and it is found to be of great significance for impact energies greater than about 1 MeV. For K- and L-shell ionization, good agreement between the theoretical values and various experimental data for electron-impact cross sections is obtained. However, for the M shell, the theory overestimates the experimental cross sections. For positron impact the agreement between the present results and the limited experimental data is found to be quite satisfactory.
