An alternative method to sweeping masses with a quadrupole mass filter of. constant U/V is suggested. It consists in keeping the relative values of 27 and V such that the absolute resolution ΔA equals 1. The resulting transmission and allowable injection voltages are thereby kept maximum throughout the spectrum, while the resolution obtained is ideally suited for most kinds of mass spectrometric work in atmospheric research. The circuit modifications required can easily be applied to all existing amplitude-swept quadrupole mass filters.

With quadrupolar excitation of ions by a small auxiliary RF field, the first stability region of the quadrupole mass filter splits into islands of stability. This study is of the first upper island, “A”. We calculate the location of this island for different values of the excitation parameter, q‘. Ion trajectory calculations are used to study the influence of the input fringing fields and the separation time. The Runge-Kutta–Nustrom–Dormand-Prince (RK–N–DP) method of order 6(7) is used for integration of the equations of ion motion. It is found that a weak auxiliary RF signal improves the peak shape for quadrupole mass filters that have weak field distortions.

We document the utility for in situ Rb-Sr dating of a one-of-a-kind tribrid mass spectrometer, ‘Proteus’, coupled to a UV laser ablation system. Proteus combines a pre-cell quadrupole mass-filter,collision cell,...

As the main body of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), quadrupole mass filter’s performance will largely affect the overall performance of the instrument. Its main performance parameters include the range of mass analysis resolution and the abundance sensitivity. In this article, we have analyzed simulated and then studied its several main performance parameters which affects the instrument.
