A vorticity transfer analogy theory of turbulent heat transfer is developed first for the case of fully developed turbulent flow under zero transverse pressure and temperature gradients such as that in the annulus between concentric cylinders rotating with different angular velocities or in a "free vortex". The mean flow is assumed to be two-dimensional. The theory, which requires that the turbulence be statistically isotropic, yields a temperature distribution in agreement with experiment except in narrow regions immediately adjacent to the boundaries. An argument is given to show that the boundary layer thickness should be of the order of the reciprocal of the square root of the mean velocity, these boundaries are introduced, and Nusselt moduli are defined and their dependence on Reynolds and Prandtl numbers is investigated.The temperature distributions for the case of non-zero transverse temperature and pressure gradients, i.e. for the case of flow in a curved channel in which the fluid does not flow back into itself, are then obtained and the applicability of the simpler equations for zero transverse gradients to this case is investigated.

In the current investigation, we performed large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent heat transfer in circular ribbed-pipe flow in order to study the effects of periodically mounted square ribs on heat transfer characteristics. The ribs were implemented on a cylindrical coordinate system by using an immersed boundary method, and dynamic subgrid-scale models were used to model Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat flux terms. A constant and uniform wall heat flux was imposed on all the solid boundaries. The Reynolds number (Re) based on the bulk velocity and pipe diameter is 24,000, and Prandtl number is fixed at Pr = 0.71. The blockage ratio (BR) based on the pipe diameter and rib height is fixed with 0.0625, while the pitch ratio based on the rib interval and rib height is varied with 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 18. Since the pitch ratio is the key parameter that can change flow topology, we focus on its effects on the characteristics of turbulent heat transfer. Mean flow and temperature fields are presented in the form of streamlines and contours. How the surface roughness, manifested by the wall-mounted ribs, affects the mean streamwise-velocity profile was investigated by comparing the roughness function. Local heat transfer distributions between two neighboring ribs were obtained for the pitch ratios under consideration. The flow structures related to heat transfer enhancement were identified. Friction factors and mean heat transfer enhancement factors were calculated from the mean flow and temperature fields, respectively. Furthermore, the friction and heat-transfer correlations currently available in the literature for turbulent pipe flow with surface roughness were revisited and evaluated with the LES data. A simple Nusselt number correlation is also proposed for turbulent heat transfer in ribbed pipe flow.

Abstract Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results for turbulent flow and heat transfer in a plane channel are presented. This study presents an idealized fully-developed planar channel flow case for which the mean velocity gradient is non-zero only in the wall-normal direction, and the mean temperature gradient is imposed to be uniform and non-zero in the streamwise or spanwise direction. Previous studies have documented direct numerical simulation results for periodic channel flow with mean temperature gradient in both the streamwise and wall-normal directions, but limited investigations exist documenting the effect of imposed spanwise gradient. The objective of this study is to evaluate turbulent heat flux predictions for three different classes of modeling approach: Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), large-eddy simulation (LES), and hybrid RANS-LES. Results are compared to available DNS data at Prandtl number of 0.71 and Reynolds number of 180 based on friction velocity and channel half-width. Specific models evaluated include the k-ω SST RANS model, monotonically integrated LES (MILES), improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES), and dynamic hybrid RANS-LES (DHRL). The DHRL model includes both the standard formulation that has been previously documented in the literature as well as a modified version developed specifically to improve predictive capability for flows in which the primary mean velocity and mean temperature gradients are not closely aligned. The modification consists of using separate RANS-to-LES blending parameters in the momentum and energy equations. Results are interrogated to evaluate the performance of the three different model types and specifically to evaluate the performance of the new modified DHRL variant compared with the baseline version.

This work serves a two-fold purpose of briefly reviewing the currently existing literature on the scaling of thermal turbulent fields and, in addition, proposing a new scaling framework and testing its applicability. An extensive set of turbulent scalar transport data for turbulent flow in infinitely long channels is obtained using a Lagrangian scalar tracking approach combined with direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow. Two cases of Poiseuille channel flow, with friction Reynolds numbers 150 and 300, and different types of fluids with Prandtl number ranging from 0.7 to 50,000 are studied. Based on analysis of this database, it is argued that the value and the location of the maximum normal turbulent heat flux are important scaling parameters in turbulent heat transfer. Implementing such scaling on the mean temperature profile for different fluids and Reynolds number cases shows a collapse of the mean temperature profiles onto a single universal profile in the near wall region of the channel. In addition, the profiles of normal turbulent heat flux and the root mean square of the temperature fluctuations appear to collapse on one profile, respectively. The maximum normal turbulent heat flux is thus established as a turbulence thermal scaling parameter for both mean and fluctuating temperature statistics.

This paper describes an investigation into the response of both the pulsed-wire anemometer and the hot-wire anemometer in a highly turbulent flow. The first part of the paper is concerned with a theoretical study of some aspects of the response of these instruments in a highly turbulent flow. It is shown that, under normal operating conditions, the pulsed-wire anemometer should give mean velocity and longitudinal turbulent intensity estimates to an accuracy of better than 10% without any restriction on turbulence level. However, to attain this accuracy in measurements of turbulent intensities normal to the mean flow direction, there is a lower limit on the turbulent intensity of about 50%. An analysis is then carried out of the behaviour of the hot-wire anemometer in a highly turbulent flow. It is found that the large errors that are known to develop are very sensitive to the precise structure of the turbulence, so that even qualitative use of hot-wire data in such flows is not feasible. Some brief comments on the possibility of improving the accuracy of the hot-wire anemometer are then given.The second half of the paper describes some comparative measurements in the highly turbulent flow immediately downstream of a normal flat plate. It is shown that, although it is not possible to interpret the hot-wire results on their own, it is possible to calculate the hot-wire response with a surprising degree of accuracy using the results from the pulsed-wire anemometer. This provides a rather indirect but none the less welcome check on the accuracy of the pulsed-wire results, which, in this very highly turbulent flow, have a certain interest in their own right.

The turbulent flow in the near-wall region affects the wall heat transfer dominantly. The farther it is from the wall, the less effect it has. So a two-step mechanism of the turbulent wall heat transfer is released: first, the energy is transferred to the outside of the viscous sub-layer by the rolling of the micro-eddy; secondly, the energy gets to the wall by conduction. Then, a theoretical model of wall heat transfer is developed with this concept. The constant in the model is confirmed by experiment and simulation of the transient turbulent heat transfer in pipe flow. Finally, the model is used to predict the local heat flux under different conditions, and the results agree well with the experimental results as well as the simulation results.

In the present investigation, turbulent heat transfer in fully developed curved-pipe flow has been studied by using large eddy simulation (LES). We consider a fully developed turbulent curved-pipe flow with axially uniform wall heat flux. The friction Reynolds number under consideration is Reτ  = 1000 based on the mean friction velocity and the pipe radius, and the Prandtl number (Pr) is 0.71. To investigate the effects of wall curvature on turbulent flow and heat transfer, we varied the nondimensionalized curvature (δ) from 0.01 to 0.1. Dynamic subgrid-scale models for turbulent subgrid-scale stresses and heat fluxes were employed to close the governing equations. To elucidate the secondary flow structures due to the pipe curvature and their effect on the heat transfer, the mean quantities and various turbulence statistics of the flow and temperature fields are presented, and compared with those of the straight-pipe flow. The friction factor and the mean Nusselt number computed in the present study are in good agreement with the experimental results currently available in the literature. We also present turbulence intensities, skewness and flatness factors of temperature fluctuations, and cross-correlations of velocity and temperature fluctuations. In addition, we report the results of an octant analysis to clarify the correlation between near-wall turbulence structures and temperature fluctuation in the vicinity of the pipe wall. Based on our results, we attempt to clarify the effects of the pipe curvature on turbulent heat transfer. Our LES provides researchers and engineers with useful data to understand the heat-transfer mechanisms in turbulent curved-pipe flow, which has numerous applications in engineering.

Recent results about the slow dynamics present in a fully developed turbulent flow are reported. In a previous paper [de la Torre & Burguete, 2007] we showed that the mean velocity field in a turbulent flow bifurcates subcritically breaking some symmetries of the problem and becomes time-dependent because of equatorial vortices moving with a precession movement. This subcriticality produces a bistable regime, whose main characteristics were successfully reproduced using a three-well potential model with additive noise. In this paper we present the characterization of the hysteresis region, not previously observed, in this bifurcation. This hysteresis appears only for an extremely small range of parameters.

Tripping devices are usually installed at the entrance of laboratory-scale pipe test sections to obtain a fully developed turbulent flow sooner. The tripping of laminar flow to induce turbulence can be carried out in different ways, such as using cylindrical wires, sand papers, well-organized tape elements, fences, etc. Claims of tripping effects have been made since the classical experiments of Nikuradse (1932, Gesetzmässigkeit der turbulenten Strömung in glatten Rohren, Forschungsheft 356, Ausgabe B, Vol. 3, VDI-Verlag, Berlin), which covered a significant range of Reynolds numbers. Nikuradse’s data have become the metric by which theories are established and have also been the subject of intense scrutiny. Several subsequent experiments reported friction factors as much as 5% lower than those measured by Nikuradse, and the authors of those reports attributed the difference to tripping effects, e.g., work of Durst et al. (2003, “Investigation of the Mean-Flow Scaling and Tripping Effect on Fully Developed Turbulent Pipe Flow,” J. Hydrodynam., 15(1), pp. 14–22). In the present study, measurements with and without ring tripping devices of different blocking areas of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% have been carried out to determine the effect of entrance condition on the developing flow field in pipes. Along with pressure drop measurements to compute the skin friction, both the Pitot tube and hot-wire anemometry measurements have been used to accurately determine the mean velocity profile over the working test section at different Reynolds numbers based on the mean velocity and pipe diameter in the range of 1.0×105–4.5×105. The results we obtained suggest that the tripping technique has an insignificant effect on the wall friction factor, in agreement with Nikuradse’s original data.

We present well-resolved large-eddy simulations of turbulent flow through a straight, high aspect ratio cooling duct operated with water at a bulk Reynolds number of $Re_{b}=110\times 10^{3}$ and an average Nusselt number of $Nu_{xz}=371$. The geometry and boundary conditions follow an experimental reference case and good agreement with the experimental results is achieved. The current investigation focuses on the influence of asymmetric wall heating on the duct flow field, specifically on the interaction of turbulence-induced secondary flow and turbulent heat transfer, and the associated spatial development of the thermal boundary layer and the inferred viscosity variation. The viscosity reduction towards the heated wall causes a decrease in turbulent mixing, turbulent length scales and turbulence anisotropy as well as a weakening of turbulent ejections. Overall, the secondary flow strength becomes increasingly less intense along the length of the spatially resolved heated duct as compared to an adiabatic duct. Furthermore, we show that the assumption of a constant turbulent Prandtl number is invalid for turbulent heat transfer in an asymmetrically heated duct.
