New lattice spacing measurements in terminal nickel solid solutions with Cr, Mn, Co, Zn, Ga, Ge, In, and Sn solutes are reported and discussed, and the relationship of lattice distortion and the depression of the solidus temperature is examined in solid solutions of the First Long Period elements in nickel.

AbstractIn the present work we investigate the possible relationship of long-period comets with five large and distant trans-Neptunian bodies (Sedna, Eris, 2007 OR10, 2012 VP113and 2008 ST291) in order to determine the probability of the transfer of a part of these kind of comets to the inner of the Solar System. To identify such relationships, we studied the relative positions of the comet orbits and listed TNOs. Using numerical integration methods, we examined dynamical evolution of the comets and have found one encounter of comet C/1861J1 and Eris.

Collected data of the gross lattice distortion in solid solutions of the First Long Period elements in each other and in copper are given together with similar data for B group solutes in Cu, Ag, and Au. It is shown that there is no correlation between the size of the lattice distortion and the solid solubility of the First Long Period transition metals in copper.

The concept that erosion, over a long period of time, would produce an evolutionary progression of landforms culminating in a nearly flat plain, the peneplain, was formulated into a coherent theory by W. M. Davis. Subsequent to early identification of the Fall Zone (oldest), Schooley, Harrisburg, and Somerville (youngest) peneplains, numerous workers pursued identification, correlation, description, folding, formative processes, and dating of Appalachian peneplains for 6 decades. Following a peak of interest and activity in the 1930's, work on Appalachian peneplains declined rapidly. Reasons for the decline include: death of former workers, diversion into other lines of research, and rise of process geomorphology. Phenomena attributed to a dependence on peneplanation include: origin of present drainage, origin of some mineral resources, and cementation of rock units. Attacks on the peneplain idea have been largely unsuccessful except for the dynamic equilibrium concept advocated by John Hack. Controversy exists about whether the disparity between rates of uplift and denundation allow adequate time for peneplanation to occur. The relationship of some surficial deposits to presumed peneplain surfaces is problematical. The peneplain concept is still alive, but new lines of research are required to resolve its controversial position.

China’s construction industry has experienced a long period of development and reform but compared to developed countries, safety on construction sites in China continues to present serious problems. Safety consciousness and safety citizenship behaviour are influential factors related to safety issues in the construction industry and may play a direct role in improving the safety of personnel on construction sites. However, recently no research has been focused on the relationship between safety consciousness and safety citizenship behaviour. Therefore, this paper aimed to investigate the relationship between safety consciousness and safety citizenship behaviour for personnel working on construction sites in China by using a questionnaire survey and statistical analysis, so that correlation between safety consciousness and safety citizenship can be demonstrated and effective measures suggested to improve the safety of construction workers in China, and perhaps in other countries as well.

This group noted that labour market research has not been given high priority in New Zealand. We have no institutions analogous to those in Australia and the United Kingdom whose prime research objective is research into labour markets and employment. New Zealand's neglect probably stems from the long period of full employment. Research is also inhibited by data limitations including, most notably, the absence of a labour force survey. There is a need to develop longitudinal survey material.

In debates on the nature and degree of democratization in the Kaiserreich, the dynamics of rural politics have received perhaps less attention than they merit. Indeed, though the picture is more nuanced now, for a long period the ability of rural elites to dominate nonelites (a core aspect of these dynamics) was simply assumed, as was the relationship of this dominance to Germany's troubled democratization. In his 1943 workBread and Democracy in Germany, for example, Alexander Gerschenkron blamed Germany's entrenched and elitist aristocracy for this trait of bullying voters into antidemocratic politics spanning from the Kaiserreich to the Third Reich. More subtly, the landmark 1966 study of Barrington Moore, Jr. noted the potential for an alliance between entrenched aristocracies and small peasantries, with each as reservoirs for antidemocratic (and potentially fascist) sentiment in several countries, with obvious application to the German case as well.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic coral Order Scleractinia has been suggested to have originated or evolved (1) by direct descent from the Paleozoic Order Rugosa or (2) by the development of a skeleton in members of one of the anemone groups that probably have existed throughout Phanerozoic time. In spite of much work on the subject, advocates of the direct descent hypothesis have failed to find convincing evidence of this relationship. Critical points are:(1) Rugosan septal insertion is serial; Scleractinian insertion is cyclic; no intermediate stages have been demonstrated. Apparent intermediates are Scleractinia having bilateral cyclic insertion or teratological Rugosa.(2) There is convincing evidence that the skeletons of many Rugosa were calcitic and none are known to be or to have been aragonitic. In contrast, the skeletons of all living Scleractinia are aragonitic and there is evidence that fossil Scleractinia were aragonitic also. The mineralogic difference is almost certainly due to intrinsic biologic factors.(3) No early Triassic corals of either group are known. This fact is not compelling (by itself) but is important in connection with points 1 and 2, because, given direct descent, both changes took place during this only stage in the history of the two groups in which there are no known corals.

Echinodermata is a phylum of marine invertebrates which has been extant since Cambrian time (c.a. 500 m.y. before the present). Modern examples of echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, and sea lilies (crinoids). The endoskeletons of echinoderms are composed of plates or ossicles (Fig. 1) which are with few exceptions, porous, single crystals of high-magnesian calcite. Despite their single crystal nature, fracture surfaces do not exhibit the near-perfect {10.4} cleavage characteristic of inorganic calcite. This paradoxical mix of biogenic and inorganic features has prompted much recent work on echinoderm skeletal crystallography. Furthermore, fossil echinoderm hard parts comprise a volumetrically significant portion of some marine limestones sequences. The ultrastructural and microchemical characterization of modern skeletal material should lend insight into: 1). The nature of the biogenic processes involved, for example, the relationship of Mg heterogeneity to morphological and structural features in modern echinoderm material, and 2). The nature of the diagenetic changes undergone by their ancient, fossilized counterparts. In this study, high resolution TEM (HRTEM), high voltage TEM (HVTEM), and STEM microanalysis are used to characterize tha ultrastructural and microchemical composition of skeletal elements of the modern crinoid Neocrinus blakei.

Electron microscopy has proved to be an invaluable discipline in studies on the relationship of viruses to the origin of leukemia, sarcoma, and other types of tumors in animals and man. The successful cell-free transmission of leukemia and sarcoma in mice, rats, hamsters, and cats, interpreted as due to a virus or viruses, was proved to be due to a virus on the basis of electron microscope studies. These studies demonstrated that all the types of neoplasia in animals of the species examined are produced by a virus of certain characteristic morphological properties similar, if not identical, in the mode of development in all types of neoplasia in animals, as shown in Fig. 1.
