New glasses of the system xEr2O3-(60-x)ZnO-40P2O5 (where x = 0.1 to 0.5 mol%) have been prepared by using a conventional meltquenching method. We have measured the densities of these glasses by using a displacement method, and corresponding molar volumes have also been calculated. We have measured both longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic sound velocities of these glasses using a pulse-echo superposition method. These ultrasonic velocities have been used to calculate the elastic moduli, Poisson ratio, and Debye temperatures. The variations of density, molar volume, ultrasonic sound velocities, elastic moduli, Poisson ratio, and Debye temperature have been discussed with respect to Er2O3 concentration.

Silica borotellurite glasses doped with different molar fraction of V2O5 have been prepared by melt quenching technique. The elastic properties of {[(TeO2)0.7 (B2O3)0.3]0.8(SiO2)0.2}(1-x)(V2O5)x glasses are investigated using ultrasonic pulse echo measurements and their elastic properties have been characterized at room temperature. The density of the glasses was measured by Archimedes method using distilled water as buoyant liquid. The ultrasonic wave velocities (longitudinal, vl and shear, vS) were recorded at 5 MHz. Elastic moduli, Poisson’s ratio (σ) and microhardness (H) were then calculated to obtain quantitative analysis regarding the structure of these glasses. The results obtained showed that the doping of V2O5 with silica borotellurite enhances the strengthening of glass network. Glass with 0.03 molar fraction of V205 shows low ultrasonic velocities and low elastic moduli. The variation of elastic properties is related to the change of structure in the vanadium doped silica-borotellurite glass system.

We have measured the absolute values of longitudinal and transversal sound velocities in ceramic samples of Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca n-1 Cu n O 2n+4 (n=1, 2,3). We have compared various methods of calculation of "true" elastic moduli of matrix material. We used best of them to find the elastic moduli, sound velocities and Debye temperatures of the material. The calculated elastic moduli are low in a comparison with other oxide superconductors. The velocities and Debye temperatures increase with increasing n.

The elastic properties of xEr2O3·(50 – x) PbO·50P2O5 (x = 0.1 to 0.5 mol%) glasses are investigated using ultrasonic pulse-echo measurements and their elastic properties are characterized at room temperature. Results from the studies show that both longitudinal and transverse velocities increase with increase of Er2O3 concentration. The elastic constants C11, C12, C44, and Young’s modulus show increasing trend while Bulk modulus and Poisson’s ratio show an increasing trend up to 0.4 mol% and 0.3 mol% of Er2O3, respectively, then there is sudden decreasing trend observed. But in the case of Debye temperatures the reverse trend has been observed. Another notable observation is that the glass with 0.4 mol% and 0.5 mol% of Er2O3 concentration exhibits high velocities and high elastic moduli. This behavior of the elastic properties is related to the change in the structure of glasses as well as the interatomic bonding.PACS No.: 62.20.DC
