Cellular bridges and voided slab bridges with large and frequently spaced circular voids undergo distortion of the cross section under nonuniform loads, which may have a significant effect on the load distribution characteristics of the bridge. For two-dimensional analysis of these bridges, it is usual to represent the transverse medium of the bridge as having finite shear rigidity. Up to the present time, the semicontinuum method of analysis did not have the capability of handling finite shear rigidity of the transverse medium. A modification is introduced in this paper through which it can now do so. It is shown that the proposed modifications consist of only minor changes to the set of equations of the earlier version of the method. By comparing the results of the proposed method with those obtained from grillage analysis, it is shown that the accuracy of the proposed method is equal to that of the grillage method, which has already been found by many researchers to be suitable for the analysis of shear-weak bridges. The paper also contains proposed modifications to the semicontinuum method so that it can handle finite shear rigidities of the longitudinal beams as well. Load distribution characteristics of cellular structures are greatly influenced by transverse cell distortion and because of this these structures require a somewhat different analysis than those used for other common types of bridges.This paper summarizes the results of an extensive literature search and initial review of the current methods of analyzing cellular and voided slab bridges. The various methods of calculating the equivalent plate parameters, which are necessary for two-dimensional analysis, are also reviewed.

Abstract A two-dimensional Galerkin finite element model for flow and contaminant transport in variably saturated porous media is used to analyze the transport of chlorides from a sanitary landfill located in Southern Ontario. A representative cross-section is selected for the analysis. Predicted chloride concentrations are presented for the cross section at various horizon years.

AbstractWith the rapid development of traffic infrastructure in China, the problem of crystal plugging of tunnel drainage pipes becomes increasingly salient. In order to build a mechanism that is resilient to the crystal plugging of flocking drainage pipes, the present study used the numerical simulation to analyze the two-dimensional flow field distribution characteristics of flocking drainage pipes under different flocking spacings. Then, the results were compared with the laboratory test results. According to the results, the maximum velocity distribution in the flow field of flocking drainage pipes is closely related to the transverse distance h of the fluff, while the longitudinal distance h of the fluff causes little effect; when the transverse distance h of the fluff is less than 6.25D (D refers to the diameter of the fluff), the velocity between the adjacent transverse fluffs will be increased by more than 10%. Moreover, the velocity of the upstream and downstream fluffs will be decreased by 90% compared with that of the inlet; the crystal distribution can be more obvious in the place with larger velocity while it is less at the lower flow rate. The results can provide theoretical support for building a mechanism to deal with and remove the crystallization of flocking drainage pipes.

Records of uredinia and telia production on the alternate hosts of Cronartium coleosporioides in British Columbia and inoculation of Castilleja miniata with aeciospores collected from various locations showed that rust isolates from dry areas of the interior of British Columbia do not produce uredinia and may have lost the ability to do so. Collections from somewhat wetter areas produced uredinia or mixtures of uredinia and telia immediately following aeciospore inoculations, and field collections from such areas in June commonly had mixtures of uredinia and telia. Loss of the uredinial stage may be a response to climates that are often unsuitable for the spread or survival of the rust on the alternate host. AbstractIn continuous casting DC magnetic fields perpendicular to the wide faces of the mold are used to control the flow in the mold. Especially in this case, even a rough knowledge of the flow structure in the mold would be highly desirable. The contactless inductive flow tomography (CIFT) allows to reconstruct the dominating two-dimensional flow structure in a slab casting mold by applying one external magnetic field and by measuring the flow-induced magnetic fields outside the mold. For a physical model of a mold with a cross section of 140 mm×35 mm we present preliminary measurements of the flow field in the mold in the presence of a magnetic brake. In addition, we show first reconstructions of the flow field in a mold with the cross section of 400 mm×100 mm demonstrating the upward scalability of CIFT.

Specific features of both three-dimensional and two-dimensional epitaxy mechanisms corresponding to various deposition conditions were revealed. Difference between low and high P-T-value 3D epitaxy was established. The deposition of films with mirror-smooth surfaces and perfect interfaces is shown to be possible.

An experimental investigation of plane turbulent jets in bounded fluid layers is presented. The development of the jet is regular up to a distance from the orifice of approximately twice the depth of the fluid layer. From there on to a distance of about ten times the depth, the flow is dominated by secondary currents. The velocity distribution over a cross-section of the jet becomes three-dimensional and the jet undergoes a constriction in the midplane and a widening near the bounding surfaces. Beyond a distance of approximately ten times the depth of the bounded fluid layer the secondary currents disappear and the jet starts to meander around its centreplane. Large vortical structures develop with axes perpendicular to the bounding surfaces of the fluid layer. With increasing distance the size of these structures increases by pairing. These features of the jet are associated with the development of quasi two-dimensional turbulence. It is shown that the secondary currents and the meandering do not significantly affect the spreading of the jet. The quasi-two-dimensional turbulence, however, developing in the meandering jet, significantly influences the mixing of entrained fluid.
