Using structural equation modeling to analyze relationships among key causes of delay in construction

Schedule delays frequently occur in construction projects. The first step in resolving delay problems is to identify the main causes of delay. Previous studies identifying significant causes of delay have not examined how different causes work together to influence project schedule delays. Structural equation modeling (SEM) of causes of delay in construction has been developed for describing and quantifying the influence of different causes. Although this empirical study is based on a survey in Taiwan’s construction environment, the proposed model is applicable to construction industries in other countries. The analytical results clearly show the correlations among key causes of delay, which is the basis for resolving future schedule delays. This study proved that SEM is capable of quantifying the comprehensive relationships among investigated factors. Additionally, SEM has a high potential to resolve experience-oriented problems in the construction industry.

Ability to easily search and then compare items is an advantage that online platforms have over bricks and mortar formats. In such an intensely competitive airline market, this paper investigates if this exploration experience satisfies the traveler during air ticket booking, by applying the stimulus organism response model. An empirical study is used to test the proposed model by applying the structural equation modeling and interaction effects. The model describes the extent by which traveler’s repurchase intention is influenced by four important factors – search and compare assortment satisfaction, social influence and overall satisfaction. The paper extends the satisfaction to online repatronage intention and customer loyalty. This empirical study also establishes that the relationships are moderated due to civil status and ticketing number of platforms used by the customers.

On YouTube, skippable in-stream advertisements (ads) are critical income for both YouTube and content creators. However, ads inevitably irritate viewers, and as a result, they tend to avoid ads. Thus, this study attempts to identify potential mitigators—source attractiveness and reciprocal altruism—of ad irritation and avoidance in the context of YouTube skippable in-stream ads. Using an online survey (n = 512) in Taiwan, the proposed model is examined by a partial least squares structural equation modeling analysis. The findings show that while ad irritation has a positive effect on ad avoidance, reciprocal altruism can significantly reduce both ad irritation and avoidance. However, source attractiveness fails to mitigate ad irritation and avoidance. Theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed, and several solutions for reducing ad irritation and avoidance are provided.

Building on the multifunctional perspective from current contract theory, we conceptualize contractual complexity as a three-dimensional construct to depict the explicitness and elaborateness of control, coordination, and adaptation provisions in a construction project contract. A 13-item scale with construction project features is developed for measuring the different aspects of contractual complexity following rigorous scale development procedures. Using the structural equation modeling technique, empirical testing results demonstrate that all of the three components contribute significantly to contractual complexity. Further analysis indicated that treating contractual complexity in the three-functional way outperforms the unidimensional one regarding power to explain satisfaction and strong-form opportunism.

The transaction cost (TC) escalation is the pervasive problem in the construction industry, which is continuously a threat to maintaining the life cycle cost of projects. Researchers have described the reality of risk for economic transactions. This study has taken the risk as a phenomenon to explore its influence on ex-post TC in construction projects. A questionnaire survey was undertaken from industry professionals to assess the risk of ex-post TC escalation in public-sector construction projects. In total, 475 surveys were conducted in Pakistan and used in the analysis. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and the measurement and structural model was validated to determine the influence of risk on ex-post TC. The final SEM results show that internal and external risk, including sub hypothesized risks, positively influence TC. The weight of relative importance shows technical risk (23.82%) and environmental risk (22.88%) as significant sub-contributors from internal and external sources, respectively. This study recommends substantial investment in human capacity development to reduce the deficiencies in the ex-ante phase of the projects that help to reduce the risk of ex-post TC escalation. It also suggests the adoption of strict policies on contingency claims, and recommends nontraditional ways of monitoring to overcome the risk of ex-post TC. This study’s results provide valuable information for industry professionals and practitioners to maintain life cycle costs as a contribution to sustainable construction.

The e-government development in Spain still lacks in the employee perspective. This background is clearly visible in the educative public sector where the authors can found several online services to employees but can't find a complete employee portal. The implementation of such systems is an opportunity to embed knowledge management, as it's the core process in education, but it would imply a deep organizational change. Thus, it is crucial to determine the barriers that could potentially prevent their implementation. The study aims to establish the barriers that influence the intention of use of those employee portals. The researchers used structural equation modeling to conduct an empirical study based on a hybrid TAM-TPB model. The results have found evidence on the majority of the proposed hypothesis. The authors conclude the study with a set of recommendations for the developers that could help in avoiding the effects of such barriers.

Nowadays, reverse logistics (RL) is one of the key strategies in many industries, especially in the electronics industry due to increasing environmental awareness and sustainable management. The main aim of this research is to investigate the correlation of RL performance to solutions for RL practice of the electronics industry in Thailand. In this research, questionnaires were distributed to 417 companies in the electronics industry of Thailand. A conceptual model was developed and the model examined by using structural equation modeling (SEM). Both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used in this study. The hypotheses were tested in which RL performance was directly positively associated with the overall solutions for RL practices. RL performance was also indirectly positively associated with management & organization solutions, legal & technology solutions and collaboration and support solutions of the various solutions for RL practices. Empirical data was tested by using SEM and it was found that the proposed model could fit with the empirical data. The proposed results of this study will help to understand more about RL practices and could provide further direction for researchers and practitioners in the electronics industry and other related industries.
