Being an essential mineral nutrient, potassium (K+) plays numerous important roles in plant growth and development and determines the yield and quality of crop products. The cellular level of K+ is controlled to a large extent by the K+ transporter, which belongs to the KT/HAK/KUP (HAK) family. However, little is known about these genes in tobacco. In this study, we surveyed the tobacco genome and identified 41 putative NtHAK genes (NtHAKS1–NtHAKS21 and NtHAKT1–NtHAKT20). Investigation of the cis-elements in upstream regions of these NtHAK genes suggests that members of this family respond to environmental cues and phytohormones. Expression data mining reveals that NtHAK genes showed clear sub-genome dominance. In all, these results will provide molecular insights into K+ transporter research in tobacco.

Gibberellins (GAs) are growth hormones strongly involved in a wide variety of physiological activities. Currently, gibberellins are commercially used to enhance phenotypic characteristics, earliness, and productivity of many vegetable and ornamental crops. In this work, the efficacy of supplementation of low levels of gibberellic acid (0, 10−8, 10−6, and 10−4 M GA3) through the mineral nutrient solution of a floating system on yield and quality of leaf lettuce and rocket plants was tested. The marketability of plants was lost when 10−4 M GA3 was added to the mineral nutrient solution. This study demonstrated that the addition of 10−4 M GA3 exceeded the acceptable threshold for use in hydroponics production systems. Below the concentration of 10−4 M, the presence of GA3 in the mineral nutrient solutions (MNS), especially at 10−6 M GA3, stimulated plant growth and enhanced the yield. Various morphological and physiological traits were enhanced by GA3 treatments (biomass accumulation, leaf expansion, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency (WUE), Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), etc.), with superimposable trends in both lettuce and rocket. The addition of 10−6 M GA3 to the nutrient solution of a hydroponic floating system can promote growth and quality of lettuce and rocket plants.

Italian, annual and perennial ryegrasses are the most important grass species cultivated for seed production in the Czech Republic. The straw remaining after seeds threshing can be used as low quality forage, bedding material or as soil amendment. However, there are no comprehensive information concerning grass straw yields and quality in central Europe. The aim of this study was to investigate the Italian (IR) and perennial (PR) ryegrass straw yield and quality. These parameters were measured for two harvest years at two locations. IR did not provide statistically higher straw yield than PR (7.50 and 7.17 t.ha–1 respectively, p = 0.314), but dry matter (DM) content immediatelly after threshing was higher than for PR (0.42 and 0.38 respectively, p = 0.03). IR straw had the same content of ash and hemicellulose (mean 69.8 and 216 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.22 and 0.57), but less crude protein (64.1 and 81.4 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.003), more fibre (399 and 382 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.02), NDF (656 and 629 g.kg–1 DM, p = 0.03) and ADF (442 and 412 g. kg–1 DM, p = 0.000) when compared with PR straw. Most of the parameters were affected by the year (with exception of crude protein) and by location (with exception of yield, DM content, ash and crude protein). There were no differences in mineral nutrient contents between species. The highest values were found in potassium (19.8 g.kg–1 DM) what is comparable with average quality hay. Phosphorus, calcium and magnesium contents (1.42, 2.96 and 1.02 g.kg–1 DM) were substantially lower than in hay. Data concerning ryegrasses straw yield and quality from the USA are comparable with our results and can be used for European conditions.

Phospholipase C (PLC) is one of the main hydrolytic enzymes in the metabolism of phosphoinositide and plays an important role in a variety of signal transduction processes responding to plant growth, development, and stress. Although the characteristics of many plant PLCs have been studied, PLC genes of maize have not been comprehensively identified. According to the study, five phosphatidylinositol-specific PLC (PI-PLC) and six non-specific PLC (NPC) genes were identified in maize. The PI-PLC and NPC genes of maize are conserved compared with homologous genes in other plants, especially in evolutionary relationship, protein sequences, conserved motifs, and gene structures. Transient expression of ZmPLC-GFP fusion protein in Arabidopsis protoplast cells showed that ZmPLCs are multi-localization. Analyses of transcription levels showed that ZmPLCs were significantly different under various different tissues and abiotic stresses. Association analysis shown that some ZmPLCs significantly associated with agronomic traits in 508 maize inbred lines. These results contribute to study the function of ZmPLCs and to provide good candidate targets for the yield and quality of superior maize cultivars.

Chromium (Cr) is considered as one of the chronic pollutants that cause damage to all living forms, including plants. Various industries release an excessive amount of Cr into the environment. The increasing accumulation of Cr in agricultural land causes a significant decrease in the yield and quality of economically important crops. The Cr-induced biochemical, molecule, cytotoxic, genotoxic, and hormonal impairments cause the inhibition of plant growth and development. In the current study, we reviewed Cr morpho-phytotoxicity related scientific reports published between 2009 to 2019. We mainly focused on the Cr-induced inhibition of seed germination and total biomass production. Furthermore, Cr-mediated reduction in the root, branches, and leave growth and development were separately discussed. The Cr uptake mechanism and interference with the macro and micro-nutrient uptake were also discussed and visualized via a functional model. Moreover, a comprehensive functional model has been presented for the Cr release from the industries, its accumulation in the agricultural land, and ultimate morpho-phytotoxicity. It is concluded that Cr-reduces plant growth and development via its excess accumulation in the plant different parts and/or disruption of nutrient uptake.

Regulators of plant growth and development are an important part of modern technologies of agricultural crops. The author studied the regularities of foliar application of growth regulator “Mars -1” on the formation of yield and quality of sugar beet roots hybrid Ivanivsko-Veselopodilskyy - 84. It is recommended to apply “Mars-1” twice: the first time – in the phase of four pairs of true leaves, in the second – before closing the leaves between rows. The dose for each entry – 0,8 l / ha.

No reduction in yield and quality of pecan nuts or leaf mineral nutrient concentration occurred when 100 lb/acre of N was applied through a drip-irrigation system compared with 200 lb/acre applied either all broadcast or half broadcast and half fertigated. Yield of `Stuart', percentage kernel of `Schley', and nut size of both cultivars were increased by irrigation or irrigation and fertigation. The 100 lb/acre N-all-fertigated treatment resulted in less soil pH reduction and less loss of K, Ca, and Mg from soil underneath the tree canopy than broadcast treatments. No evidence of excessive soil pH reduction in the wetted zone of fertigated trees was noticed. Calcium and Mg were higher within than outside the wetted zone.
