Highly significant positive heterosis was found for root length, diameter and fresh weight in F1 hybrids derived in a seven-parent diallel cross of commercially available cultivars of Brassica napus L. var. napobrassica Mill. Significant general combining ability and specific combining ability effects and a preponderance of additive gene action were also noted for root length, diameter and fresh weight. The inheritance of these three traits is thought to be conditioned by additivity at the majority of loci and partial dominance at the remaining ones. Heritability estimates ranged from 0% for dry matter to 26% for root diameter.

Combining ability and heterosis were studied in a 7×7 half diallel cross in maize for grain yield and yield contributing characters. Significant general and specific combining ability variances were observed for all the characters studied. The significant estimates of GCA and SCA variances suggested the importance of both additive and non-additive gene actions for the expression studied traits. In these studies, variances due to SCA were higher than GCA for all charactesr, which revealed the predominance of non additive gene action (dominance and epistasis) for controlling these traits. Parents P1 and P4 were excellent general combiner for days to tasseling and silking while P1 and P5 for early maturity. P4 for short height and, P4 and P7 for higher thousand kernel weight. The parents P4 and P6 having good combining abilities for yield. Heterosis estimation was carried out using two commercial varieties NK40 and 900MG. When standard commercial check NK40 was used, the percent heterosis for kernel yield varied from -51.39 to 12.53%. Among the 21 F1s, 3crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis was exhibited by the cross P4×P6 (12.43%), P6×P7 (10.89%) and P2×P3 (9.87%) respectively. Compared with 900MG as check, the percent heterosis for kernel yield varied from -53.73 to 7.01%. Among the 21 F1s, none of the crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis were exhibited by the crosses P4×P6 (7.01%), P6 x P7 (5.55%) and P2×P3 (4.57%). The crosses showed significant positive SCA values could be used for variety development after verifying them across the agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.Bangladesh J. Agril. A complete diallel cross of Bonanza, Conquest, Galt, Jubilee, and Olli barley was made and the parents, F1 and F2 bulks, were subjected to a kernel-sizing procedure, using five different standard sieves. Mean values for the P, F1, and F2 were obtained and heritabilities and estimates of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability were calculated. Reciprocal effects were not significant in either F1 or F2. For the F1 data significant differences could only be found on the 19 × 2.4-mm (3/4 × 6/64-inch) sieve. Only GCA was significant for the F1, suggesting additive gene action. By contrast, in the F2 GCA was highly significant for all sieve sizes from 19 × 2.2 mm (3/4 × 11/128 inch) upwards, and SCA was significant on those of size 19 × 2.4 mm (3/4 × 6/64 inch) upwards. For the F2 on the 2.4-mm (6/64-inch) screen, the SCA effect exceeded the GCA effect in magnitude, and was in a negative direction, contributing to the two cases of negative heterosis for kernel plumpness. No significant positive heterosis was found in F2, and F2 bulks were normally intermediate in value to their parents. The amount of SCA effect was unrelated to the degree of similarity of the parents by pedigree, or to whether they were malting or feed types. Bonanza, Conquest, and Jubilee were significantly plumper than Galt and Olli, and Olli transmitted its less plump kernel type to the F2 generation, as indicated by its large negative GCA effect. None of the other cultivars exhibited significant GCA effects. Little progress in increasing kernel plumpness can be expected from crosses between these cultivars, as heritabilities were also generally low.

In order to study the combining ability, genetic parameters and gene actions of yield, yield components and quality characters in rice, fifteen F2 generation of a 6?6 diallel cross, excluding reciprocals, was grown in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results of analysis of variance showed significant differences between the genotypes for grain yield (GY), 100-grain weight (HGW), number of panicles per plant (PN), panicle length (PL), number of full grains per panicle (FGN) and for quality characters including amylose content (AC) and gel consistency (GC). The results of combining ability analysis revealed that general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant for characters GY, FGN, GC, AC, HGW and PN indicating the involvement of additive and non-additive effects in their inheritance, however high amounts of Bakers ratio remarked that additive gene effect had more portion in controlling these traits. The best combiners for GY, HGW, FGN, PN and PL, were RI18447-2, IR 50, Daylamani, RI18430-46 and Daylamani respectively. For AC and GC, the best combiner was Daylamani. Hayman's graphs showed that regression line passed below the origin cutting Wr axis in the negative region for HGW, PN, PL and GC, indicating the presence of over dominance. Estimates of genetic parameters showed significant amount of H1 and H2, and non-significant amount of D for the characters GY, PN, PL and GC, which confirmed the existence of dominance in the inheritance of these traits.

IAA, IAN, accelerator α, and an ether-insoluble growth substance (designated as 'A') were found in alcohol extracts of healthy inflorescences of Brassica napus L. and in smaller amounts in the malformed, parasitized inflorescences produced by plants infected with Albugo Candida (Pers. ex Chev.) Kuntze. The total activity of diseased extracts (≡ 915 μg IAA/kg fresh weight) was only 61% of that of healthy ones. IAN accounted for approximately 86% of the total activity in both extracts. Brassica is thus a good source of IAN. Both IAA and IAN were identified by their chromogenic reactions, ultraviolet spectra, and Rf values in two solvent systems. Alkaline hydrolysis of 'A' produced an ether-soluble, Ehrlich-positive spot with the same Rf value as IAA. The results are discussed briefly.

One hundred rhizobacteria previously isolated from the rhizospheres of Brassica species were screened for their growth promoting activity in Brassica napus L. under gnotobiotic conditions. Results revealed that 58% of the rhizobacteria increased root length (up to 139%), 39% enhanced shoot length (up to 78%), and shoot weight (up to 72%) of Brassica napus L. Based upon growth promotion of B. napus seedlings under gnotobiotic conditions, 10 promising plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) were selected and tested for their effectiveness in growth promotion, yield, and oil content of B. napus grown in pots. The pot trials revealed that inoculation with selected PGPR increased plant height, root length, number of branches per plant, stem diameter, number of pods per plant, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, and oil content over a range of 7–57% above the uninoculated control. These isolates were then assayed for their ability to produce auxins in vitro in the presence and absence of L-tryptophan. Regression analysis showed that in vitro auxin production by these bacteria was significantly related to the number of branches and oil content of B. napus. It is highly likely that improvement in growth and yield of the inoculated plants is due to an increase in the number of branches per plant, since there was a positive correlation of this growth parameter with the number of pods per plant, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, and seed oil content. Results indicated that simultaneous screening of rhizobacteria for growth promotion under gnotobiotic conditions and in vitro production of auxins could be a useful approach for selecting effective PGPR.
